This should be taken as inspiration for making your own lovecraftian monster. THE CR IS WAY OFF. Taking these creatures as they are written and assuming the CR is correct, your players WILL DIE. The Gug, which is written to be a challenge rating of 10, is at least 20. I would bump it to 23 because of its ridiculous AC and flanking capabilities.

The creatures here don't really fit with the 5e design ethic. That's not a problem in itself, but the creatures stand out in a weird way.

That being said, if you need lovecraftian creations, these will do nicely.

On a side note, fighting lovecraftian creatures doesn't really fit with the Lovecraft ethos either. Otherworldly monsters that we have difficulty even considering.

If you're looking to give your players the creeps, or evoke a weird fiction mood, confronting these monsters will break that.

It was a good effort at bringing some other-worldly creatures into 5e, but none of the creatures in this document seem to follow any of the standard conventions used in monster design in 5e. The challenge ratings are off, the AC, Hit Points, and monster abilities do not reflect anything similar in the official 5e books. The numbers in the stat blocks just seem to be pulled from some random idea, rather than built using the monster manual and DM guide.

About the reviewer: I have been playing D&D since 1978 and have played every edition, most of the time spent behind the DM screen. I currently run 3 5th Edition campaigns set in Greyhawk and frequently put resources I develop on DM’s Guild .

This is a great product for anyone wishing to take their campaign toward a horror motif, or a DM wishing new monsters to throw at their players. The four creatures are each accompanied by a nice illustration and the formatting is similar to standard monster entries found in the Monster Manual.

The monsters include: Gug (CR10). A subterranean giant cursed by the gods. Mi-Go (CR5). Intelligent praying mantis like scientists and colonists able to disguise themselves as other creatures. Nightgaunt (CR3). A gargoyle like creature from the dream realm. Rat-thing (CR 2). Tiny sadistic rodent like beings.

Each of the creatures has some unique abilities that should keep players on their toes, especially those who have memorized many of the standard monsters. Many of the abilities are more descriptive, rather than mechanically based, making them more appropriate to setting a tone than combat usefulness.

At the time of this review, this product is listed as “Pay What You Want” with an average contribution of just under $1. That seems a fair price for the content provided. This product is highly recommended.
