CGR2 The Complete Gladiator's Handbook (2e)

I bought the soft cover version of this book and I am not disappointed! Great print quality and sturdy pages, with a lot of lore about gladiators, games and arenas in the dark Sun setting. There are also rules and mecanics for 2e Dark Sun setting, but the lore is more prevalent, so it can be useful for a Dark Sun adventure set in any D&D edition. My main gripe with the book is a detail : the Drajan arena and palace are not at all how they are represented in the Dark Sun boxed set (which was way cooler as well) : the palace is supposed to look like an Aztec temple with an arena integrated on one side. But that is so minor compared to what the book has to give that I can't really remove a star for this.

I purchased the 4 print on demand Dark Sun books available so far, and I love them all. That being said, I'm disapointed by this book. It is not what I expected (but that is on me). It is a supplement for the 2e Psionic Handbook, made for the Dark Sun setting, so it's not really a stand alone title. It does give a little bit of lore for Dark Sun psionics, although not as much as I would have liked, and about half of the book contains DS rules and new powers and sciences. But, as I said, that disappointment is on me : I didn't make my research properly. The reason I give the book 3 stars is the quality of the print. The soft cover is as you would expect and the pages are sturdy, but the content of the pages are zoomed in from the original work. The page numbers is not always visible and, way worse, the text closest to the binding is very hard to read because, pages being zoomed in means there is little to no space between the binding and the columns of texts. Steer clear of this book until they fix the problem (unless you already have 2e Psionic Handbook and really really want this one for your 2e Dark Sun game).

I ordered the Hard-cover Print-on-demand version and I've read it cover to cover. It's a great book for a great setting! The book predates the lore introduced by the Prsim Pentad series of novels, so the world does not have as much lore as it could get (for better or worse), but it sets the atmosphere much better than the novels. Sturdy book with sturdy pages, and great printing result (and cool graphics by Brom!). If you like post-apocalyptic/desert settings, this book is for you!
