I am baffled at why this product is free. It is the same level of quality as most WotC print books and must have taken its singular author years to complete.

I’d like to say “take my money please” because this is fantastic and it shows true dedication and love for the material.

Hild has done a fantastic job at reimagining the Maztica campaign setting from 2nd edition for both 5th edition and modern audiences. He has cast aside many of the older rendition's colonialist trappings and turned it into a richly diverse world where the history is detailed and the native people have agency in their destiny. This, along with some of his other Maztica products, are among some of the best products that DMsGuild has to offer.

I highly recommend checking Hild's Maztica out for free if you are unsure, but if you end up liking it then come back later to support the author with some cash so Hild can continue developing this rich world that Wizards have left abandoned for nearly two decades.

Maztica was, frankly, amongst the worst of TSR's "Ethnic Fantasy" D&D settings, with a lot of unfortunate implications, mostly centering around the obsession with pushing it into a Historical Fantasy mode and thus literally leaving its natives mechanically inferior to the Heroic Fantasy faux-Europeans who came crashing into their world. This fan-update is a huge improvement over the original, trying its hardest to walk the tricky tightrope between remaining faithful to the quite restrictive lore originally written for it by TSR and attempting to fix TSR's mistakes by bringing Maztica properly into the Heroic Fantasy model of the rest of the Forgotten Realms, and succeeding with considerable aplomb. The effort put into making Hishna and Pluma Magic into powerful magics of equal viability with anything "traditional" D&D can throw out pays off in dividens, and the fact the author went to the trouble of doing so without simply retconning away the old silliness of their weakness in editions past speaks highly of their devotion to this setting and the wider Realms. It's still a touch humanocentric for my tastes, but that's to be expected given the restraints left by that faithfulness, and I'm not a huge fan of the backstory elements justifying the removal of horses and migrants during the Spellplague era, but that's a matter of personal taste. All in all, this is an example of "Ethnic Fantasy" done well.

This review has utterly made my day. You identified what I truly struggled with more than anything in writing this book. I wanted to be respectful to both the cultures which Maztica has used as inspiration and maintain consistency with the original canon material. That was not an easy task while still hoping to make sense and, frankly make it fun and playable. I truly, truly appreciate your insight recognizing this struggle.

a good update / continuation of the Maztica setting, bringing up to 5e spec and current Forgotten Realms date. has a detailed history, good regioanl guide, races, classes and spells for thier magics. its a bit thin on momsters and items, but has some good hooks for adventures. These issues are addressed in alt supplemntes. its a very good book if you want to adventure someplace very different

The book is great in many ways. It is thorough, well-written and has a lot of content. The only real flaw it is that many images are pixelated or low-res.

This is easily my favorite DMsGuild product. It literally does provide an entire campaign that covers everything the 2e boxed set covered along with plenty of additions added from mythology and what I assume to be the authors creativity.

I only recently downloaded the product so I only know the newer edition but it looks like the author addressed the concerns found in some of the earlier reviews. I actually hope some of the other reviewers come back and amend their ratings as this book should have 5/5 stars across the board.

I want to take a look at the older version however, because I’m curious to see what the Eagle and Jaguar Knights look like as rangers.

The Maztica Campaign Guide does a wonderful job in both giving a solid grounding in the lore of the setting for those unfamiliar with the AD&D 2E version as well as updating the setting for D&D 5E. This was particularly important to me because of the huge changes implied for Maztica due to first the Spellplague in 4E and then the Second Sundering in 5E. I used the guide to create a surrounding setting for running The Hidden Shrine of Tamoachan from Tales from the Yawning Portal in a 5E Forgotten Realms game.

I did, however, occasionally find the pages hard to read - the thin serif font on a white page with a piece of (lovely) monochrome background art looked nice, but hurt my eyes to look at (particularly on a screen) after a time. I did print a few pages for quick reference at my table and they looked better - but the font could still have benefitted from being a bit thicker. A lay-out scheme more akin to the WotC house style would probably have worked better.

The Maztican character races, classes, spells, items and other options were well handled and appreciated, as were the (few) new monster statblocks and the sample adventure at the end. Some of the subraces were a bit underwhelming compared to their 2E counterparts, but this is a minor complaint. The map at the end of the book is the one big low point for me - it's very blurry, low resolution, done in the 3E style - I suspect it's reused from somewhere. I've seen better custom maps of 5E Maztica (and indeed, used one), and it would've done the authors well to commission such a map.

If there was one thing really missing from the guide that I would have very much appreciated, it would be a random encounter table, something keyed to the unique Maztican setting, using both MM monsters and monsters from TWC.

However, all of that is irrelevant when you consider the depth and breadth of this updated version of Maztica and that the book is FREE. So who am I to criticize anything, really?

This is a remarkably fair and poignant bit of criticism and praise for TWC1. Likely, had I purchased this product myself today, I would have said many of the same things. I created this guide in the early days of DMsGuild and to be honest, I really had no experience in putting together any type of gaming product. It was simply a labor of love that I wanted to share with others who might have felt some serious nostalgia for the setting (ergo the price). Since then, I have worked on over a dozen new products, hopefully improving with each new one (including a guide for an Anchorome Campaign to the north of Maztica). I am embroiled in the Anchorome setting at the moment but your review has inspired me to revisit and hopefully “perfect” this guide. There are other, game oriented portions I’m thinking of changing as well. For example, I believe the jaguar and eagle knight are far more suited to be paladin archetypes than ranger. Also, I had written up the tabaxi as a race long before they appeared in an official source which makes them obsolete. I appreciate you’re wel thought out review and I do hope to getting to revisiting this product, my first and therefore favorite, at some point in the future. If you have other thoughts please feel free to email me on my gmail account at seethe75 or drop them in the comments here. I’ll listen to all criticisms.

This product was absolutely amazing, and I was so glad to find it! I (and my group) LOVED the original 2nd Edition Maztica but we could just never fit it into our adventures. We used so many pieces of it though, and now that we're at the point where we can use it I'm THRILLED that there is so much work in here for it. I got this and the magic accessory and we're set to finally start the old Maztica Fires of Zatal adventure. I can't wait to purchase and start incorperating the rest of these works! Thank you!

This is an awesome product, it looks like it is very well researched and put together my people who clearly love the original second edition Maztica. Alot of work has been put into this sourcebook it as an unbelieviable value too. This is one of the best Dms guild products out there! Thank to the community responsible for this book!
