I am new to DCC RPG. It is fast to play, and I am using commercially available stuff in my game since I pressed for time. Goodman Games produces fantastic stuff, and I've read that this publisher does great as well.
But the quality here is lacking. The story does not measure up to Goodman Games' quality. I may give this publisher one more shot, and if this is what they've got, I'll buy from others.
This scenario is very, very brief. I paid $3 for it. But it is so simple and short that it is about what I could have come up with myself on the fly.
I will expand it to last a 5-6 hour game session, adding encounters, etc. But this is a 3 hour deal, tops, based on the adventure itself.
There are 6 or 7 pages of actual adventure/content, depending on whether you counting the beginning summary as content. The map for the adventure fits on one page, one sided.
The art is excellent -- pure DCC RPG old school. But the scenario is kinda boring and lacks a story, the main character lacks a defined, credible reason for being who and what he is.
This should be a freebie or a buck or two. I can't complaint for the $3 I paid -- I guess I'd just rather have paid $7-10 and gotten a Goodman Games adventure that would last 3 game sessions.
The listed treasure is a monty haul for surviving 1st level characters, unless you want them all in plate with warhorses and various finery at 1st level. That's not how I roll...
Overall, it is not a bad value, but I was just not "wow'ed" by it at all.
Art: 5/5
Writing: 4/5 clear and concise and easy to read and understand, good if you've got 30 minutes to get ready to run something.
Originality/Quality of story: 2/5
Length: 2/5

I have been looking for something new, but I cannot stand d20 and the D&D 3.0; 3.5; 4.0; D&DNext and blah de blah Prestige Classes/never ending expansion of game system, with its quantum leaps in power every level. This is the ultimate in munchkin/monty haul. And, it gets no fun, fast.
THIS game system is familiar to old school gamers, but with lots of new twists. Cool spin on magic, cool spin on Critical Hits and Fumbles, everything. Everything in one, long, beefy book. No needless complexity, but crunchy complexity where it is needed.
I just bought the Rules and read them, and I am trying to get my group to convert from a retro 1st Ed AD&D game we just started. These rules allow a player to ANYTHING in combat, but flexibly and intuitively and quickly., but in a way which makes sense and seems fair.
Its a different approach that feels familiar, fast to play, and I am pretty excited. Best new rules I've read in a LONG time. Well done, Goodman Games! Highly recommended!

This is the best game no one plays.
The rules system is a fast and simple system that works and is quick playing.
Even if you do not want to use the rules, the background and game itself is phenomenal and original.
This is alot of fun and definitely worth a read!

As a veteran Champions/HERO system gamer, I couldnt resist. Their art, layout, and marketing is fabulous. And, for those who are afriad to stray from the overly-restrive but structured and defined world of d20, M&M is a pretty fun game. It is to the superhero genre of today what Villans and Viligantes was to the original AD&D 20 years ago. If you're stuck on using d20 and want a supers game, this is the only show in town. But I'd still recommend trying the HERO system, which truly allows unlimited flexibility in creating a character.

LIKED: Beautiful, and really amazing how they twist d20 to create a playable supers game--if I didnt see it, I wouldn't have believed it could be done, but they did!

DISLIKED: Hey, its based on d20, a system designed for medieval fantasy. They really have to twist the heck out of it to make it work, and, coming from a HERO system backround, I found it to be very constrained as far as what you could design your character to do.

QUALITY: Excellent

VALUE: Satisfied
A substantial art upgrade to the venerable leader of fantasy mapping, CC3 promises it all: campaign maps (which they have always been best at) all the way down to battle mats (with upstarts like Dundjinni surpassing them until recently).
I have played with it and here is the skinny: it crashed a couple times, and I have a fully-updated, new, and very fast computer. It is substantially more difficult to use than Dundjinni, and its battle mat art is not as nice. However, you can throw together an overland map pretty easily. For former CC users, this is a must upgrade. For newcomers, if you want battle mats and a very occasional overland map, consider Dundjinni. If you do not mind a learning curve, then buy this, but understand that you aren't going to fiddle with the app for an hour and produce maps on par with their published samples. You CAN do that with Dundjinni...

LIKED: Great art upgrade, and now, you can finally make sorthwhile battlemats for tabletop play.

DISLIKED: Crashes, steep learning curve.

QUALITY: Acceptable

VALUE: Satisfied
We'd appreciate feedback on any crashes, because the level of tech support (and my own experience) suggests it is very stable. The free CSUAC art pack allows you to use Dundjinni user art to create battlemats, and DD3 (when it's released) will add to that capability.
If you do own Dundjinni, you'll find that all the CC3 overland art is available for use in Dundjinni, without license restrictions. |

So long as you understand that this is a book giving the reader a million different options for how they want their fantasy world to work, AND NOT A BOOK DESCRIBING AN OFFICIAL WAY OF DOING THINGS with alternatives, you will probably really enjoy this book. There are alot of clever ideas in here, and some pretty exhaustive treatments of the various factors to be considered in creating any fantasy setting. Alt of work and love obviously went into this book. The layout and artwork is not the greatest.

LIKED: Massive, and gives tons of options for creating your own Fantasy HERO game world to play in.

DISLIKED: I prefer an 'officialy' approach, with variations, rather than a listing of possible means of handling, say, a magic system, or armor, weapon damage, etc.

QUALITY: Very Good

VALUE: Satisfied
Unless you are well-versed in a former iteration of the HERO system, this book, weighing in at 660+ pages, just rules, no genre materials--JUST HERO SYSTEM RULES--will likely be way too much. If you are new to the system or gaming in general, get the Hero System Sidekick, which is a 120 page book with all the essntials of the system, which may be all the rules you'll ever need. Later, you can graduate to this monster.
The revision fixes errata, refines the rules, and offers a ton more examples of the rules being applied. I wasn't sure it would be worthwhile to get this , since I had the regular 5th Ed., but I have to say unreservedly, yes, get this. You will not find a more flexible, interesting, exciting, and fun rule system, and the best thing about it is: it is TRULY universal, and it TRULY works in all genres. This is all my groups plays now.

LIKED: Massive, covers everything, even rule mechanics you never thought you'd ever need. All the rules, with tons of examples, in one place.

DISLIKED: Off-putting to new gamers or those new to the HERO system, in that it is a book of rules only (no genre info) that is more than 600 pages, and is 2 or 3x as thick as a D&D 3.5 Ed book.

QUALITY: Excellent

VALUE: Very Satisfied
Really a phenomenal effort. If you are into history, want to play in a fantasy ROme or more gritty, realistic Rome, this wors for either. I am using it as a template for a civilization in a game of mine. Well-written, voluminous, and filled with tons of details, I found this to be a fine effort, and an interesting read even if you do not using it for gaming.

LIKED: Great overview of the entire civilization, yet with tons of details.

DISLIKED: Tough call--I did not reall see any weaknesses.

QUALITY: Excellent

VALUE: Satisfied
I have a group which games once a month, if we are lucky (older group, some of us have kids, others are workaholics, so 2x/mo. is not an option). Long single dungeons are a problem, bc we never get thru a large one in one sitting, and even with a good note-taker, 2/3 of the group forgets where they left off is we bridge sessions. This product allows for substantially shorter, but perfect for one long session type games. Typical old-school feel that all of this company's products possess!

LIKED: Bite size chunks for once a month gamers!

DISLIKED: This was pretty much a perfect product for what I paid and was looking for.

QUALITY: Excellent

VALUE: Very Satisfied
Very useful. Different figures indifferent poses to add some variety. Amazing what they can do with paper. Absolutely beautiful models. Putting them together is a bit time consuming, but the end product is worthwhile!

LIKED: For less than the price on one metal dragon miniature, you get a whole assortment.

DISLIKED: One dragon prints out on 15 pages of cardstock, with more than half the pages having 60% of large chunks of dead space. REALLY thoughtless and terrible layout for this reason alone. Each dragon could easily have fit on 7 ot 8 pages. Sure, you can cut and paste into another app and save paper, but why?

QUALITY: Very Good

VALUE: Satisfied
This is exactly what every GM should have lying on his hard drive for when he needs to throw together a quick game for a demanding group. The details are easy--sometimes the IDEAS take the most time to devleop when perparing a scenario. This has it all. You'll see alot of familiar stuff in here, but organized and seembled to be extrememly useful when you have a writer's block. Well worth the price, well written, and an innovative product!

QUALITY: Very Good

VALUE: Very Satisfied
