Initiative Cards: Monster Set 1
Publisher: The Game Mechanics
by Jeffrey P. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 05/27/2006 00:00:00

This is a great line to pick up to speed up your games. Speed through combats without needing to flip from book to book or character sheets.

After using the product a good while, however, there are a few points of improvement that could be added.

 1. A way to create new cards where you enter in stats and have the cards created with the proper format and layout.

 2. Ways to print individual cards on blank 3x5 index cards.

This would make an excellent product even better and easier to use and utilize.

LIKED: Speeds up combat and makes the DM's job much easier. Having all the major stats at hand without having to flip through books.

DISLIKED: Purchasing 110# cardstock and printing off an entire sheet just to get one card.

Hand writing or editing cards for new or non-OGL monsters.

QUALITY: Very Good

VALUE: Very Satisfied
100 Fantasy Adventure Seeds
Publisher: Postmortem Studios
by Jeffrey P. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 11/28/2004 00:00:00

Who needs Adventure Seeds? Any DM that cares more about storytelling and role-playing than monster-mashes/dungeon crawls.

Who needs one-hundred Adventure Seeds? Any DM above that also has equally as smart and careful role-players in their game. Also, no player can memorize all 100 adventure seeds.

100 Fantasy Adventure Seeds is a wonderful e-book that has a simple and quick plot line. Along with each adventure idea comes three twists (the real juicy part of the book that really make this more than just plot seeds). Many of the earlier adventure seeds are standard plot types with typical twists, but the book REALLY gets going when you get past the middle. The adventures become more imaginative and the twists more unique.

Is it too early/late to request "Another 100 Adventure Seeds"?

SRD 3.5 pdf
Publisher: Cartography Unlimited for RPGs
by Jeffrey P. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 11/28/2004 00:00:00

This product is bookmarked extremely well. This takes great advantage of the electronic format. The ability to text-search using the PDF viewer is also a great plus.

Some people might say that they can do this with other versions of the SRD, but this product makes specific use of the PDF format to allow for easier use.

LIKED: Ability to "magically" pull up specific rules to amaze your players

DISLIKED: Unlimited updates is useless if RPGnow limits your downloads. "Max Limit" sucks and makes this product of much less use.

QUALITY: Acceptable

VALUE: Satisfied
Fantasy Player's Companion: Core Class Variants (Revised)
Publisher: Ronin Arts
by Jeffrey P. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 11/28/2004 00:00:00

This collection of Variant Classes will enable me to provide for more diverse and unexpected NPCs for my Players to run into.

This book will also give my players future options in creating new characters.

Most of the book is very strong with only a few weak points, including the Druid and Sorcerer variants.

The strongest part of this book is the Rogue variant of "Thief".

LIKED: Imaginative variants to old classics. THIEF!!!

DISLIKED: Only one variant per class. Makes the weak Druid and Sorcerer variant more disappointing because there is no alternative within the source to use.

QUALITY: Acceptable

VALUE: Satisfied
This book should be called, "Slimes, Molds, and Fungi", and not the title used. I actually thought that I had a corrupted download that was missing several pages.

CR's only go to 10.

Definitely not what I was looking for when I downloaded this file.

QUALITY: Disappointing

VALUE: Disappointed
Distinctions & Demerits
Publisher: Distant Horizons Games company
by Jeffrey P. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 11/28/2004 00:00:00

Less of a "D20" Sourcebook and more of an ideas book, I found this particular book to be of little use to my campaign compared to other books of similar design, including The Book of Distinctions & Drawbacks (4/5 stars with my review) and WotC's Unearthed Arcana.

Formatting was horrible as well. The only charm came from the use of classical art, but that was of no use to me in my campaign.

LIKED: Classical Art and some unique ideas

DISLIKED: Format, Format, Format

QUALITY: Disappointing

VALUE: Disappointed
Creator Reply:
We have both of those. Distinctions & Demerits is designed to provide character development throughout campaign and allow it to be transported between campaigns, not to add initial modifiers as the other two products do. It's formatted so that everything you need to use it in play can be printed out on seven pages in a simple two-column format for easy reference. Is there something you'd like in an alternate format? The Book of Distinctions & Drawbacks
Publisher: Cryptosnark Games
by Jeffrey P. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 11/28/2004 00:00:00

This book is of great use to those DMs and Players that wish to add some "personality" to their characters to distinguish them more from the stock core classes and prestige classes.

I find the book fairly well balanced and the drawbacks are all very good in making sure that the players REALLY want to do what they think they want to do. They all have the potential to be quite burdensome to the character and not something I think anyone would jump into without due and careful thought.

Those of you in roll-playing campaigns will find this book to be of much less value. Those of you in role-playing campaigns may find this book to be a great deal of fun.

The one thing I need to do is cross-reference the content of this book with the WotC Unearthed Arcana list.

I recommend this book over another here at RPGnow: Distinctions & Demerits.

DISLIKED: Stayed away from purely role-playing drawbacks, but this would be a plus to almost everyone else.

QUALITY: Very Good

VALUE: Very Satisfied
Lions Den Press: Secrets of the Planes -- Planar Factions
Publisher: Purple Duck Games
by Jeffrey P. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 11/28/2004 00:00:00

Disclaimer: I personally know the author. While this might seem like I would be more favorable to his work, Ari and everyone else that know me, knows this means that I will be much harsher than normal since he will have ample opportunity to punch me out ;)

I love to collect "Planar" books and really enjoyed Malhavoc's Countless Doorways. That product could easily be used as a collection of campaign primers that could keep a gaming group busy for years besides a Planar travel book.

I have to say that Ari has done something very similar here. If not every single faction is of use to you, using them individually can provide for a very large plot thread in any existing campaign.

The weakest of the factions, IMHO, are the Mythmakers. While imaginative, it just seems a great deal more convoluted than I would have expected from the author.

The strongest and most likely to cause friends or foes among player characters are the Vault of Souls. They should be very handy at throwing in a monkey-wrench into any resurrections the party has in mind (past or present).

Note to self: Have Ari run a game as a DM instead of bumming a ride as a player all the time. The "Heaven and Hell" campaign idea is still floating out there for you.

LIKED: Very diverse, interesting, and well fleshed out entries

DISLIKED: Cannot use any of it since author is playing in my campaign

QUALITY: Very Good

VALUE: Very Satisfied
The Taverner's Trusty Tome
Publisher: Dark Quest Games
by Jeffrey P. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 11/27/2004 00:00:00

This is the defacto standard D20 rules for drinking and intoxication (and also added to the FFG Dawnforge universe through Path of Legend). Built on the original rules in Tournaments, Fairs, and Taverns, they are greatly expanded to add detail to the NPCs and drunkard personality types you can add to your game.

The other great thing about these rules is that many other publishers are recognizing the defacto standard for intoxication and typically add compatible stats for their alcoholic drinks.

Highly recommended

QUALITY: Excellent

VALUE: Very Satisfied
After browsing this e-book, I can't help but be amazed by the thought and research involved in pulling the entire collection together.

This book gives me great options (and more importantly, ideas) as a DM trying to stay ahead of a tremendously creative group of players that include screenwriters, D20 authors, and game designers.

I'm always in need for oddities to keep them on their toes.

LIKED: Extremely thorough

QUALITY: Excellent

VALUE: Very Satisfied
Do you have a horse nut in your game? Do you have someone that tries to role-play EVERY aspect of their character to include his/her horse?

This book has enabled me, as the DM, to better deal with the situations presented by these players. Having detailed and quantified information about the various breeds and temperaments allows me to role-play back the horse's responses, swinging back a level of control and balance to the me, the DM.

LIKED: Quick and clear for non-horse people.

QUALITY: Very Good

VALUE: Satisfied
Buy the Numbers
Publisher: S.T. Cooley Publishing
by Jeffrey P. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 11/27/2004 00:00:00

I am the type of DM that likes to allow the players to do what they will. I find that they basically create the adventure on their own and it is simply my job to react (I'm blessed with a great group of players).

I don't restrict introductions of books into my game. Buy the Numbers brings this up to the extreme. As a result, I've found that I've had to impose some limitations in the use of this book.

Buy the Numbers offers my players the ability to truly create the characters they wish to play, and to experiment with different ideas.

Definitely only for advanced players, though. Keep it away from beginners or you'll just confuse them.

If you're not going to introduce this book, outright, into your campaigns, they quantify small features in other classes to help you modify them to your campaign feel. Example: I have a Large sized Minotaur, non-Spellcasting Paladin variant. The character is too large for a traditional mount and any mount that could actually carry him would be too powerful and disruptive to the balance of the game. We simply quantified the value of the mount and replaced this feature with another more suited to the character, campaign, and me.

LIKED: Detailed with quantifications for everything

DISLIKED: Could be better indexed and formatted.

QUALITY: Very Good

VALUE: Satisfied
The Jeweler's Exchange is of great use for DMs that actually force their spellcasters to replenish their spell components.

It is also of great use for gathering up campaign plot points around rare minerals.

Finally, the book is great if you're going to craft out magic items.

LIKED: Very detailed

QUALITY: Excellent

VALUE: Very Satisfied
Kaiser's Bazaar - Book C
Publisher: Mad Kaiser Games
by Jeffrey P. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 11/27/2004 00:00:00

I purchased all the Kaiser's Bazaar e-books and am very happy with them all.

Book C is of great use for anyone wanting to do custom weapons, as the metals section is well detailed and of great use.

Other items covering wood types tends to be of less use to the average D20 Fantasy game, though they have found use in my games, just the same. Very useful in my seafaring/merchant campaign.

The best Kaiser's Bazaar after Book A.
