The Elements of Magic (Original)

This supplement presents a magic system so different from the normal one that it stands alone, permitting magical practicioners to concoct their own spells from various concepts - the elements, good, evil, and so on. This building-block style has been used in many other successful games, including Mage: The Ascencion, Changeling: The Dreaming, and Ars Magica.

The high quality of EN Publishing's work shines through. This version is the original version of the Elements - a revised version came out later that cleaned up several aspects of the rules and took it still further. That product's improvement, however, was incremental to this excellent start.

The PDF is well laid out and uses bookmarks.

Like it, always wanted the Ars Magica magic in D20. One thing missing, is predefined spell effects but your players can make those up as they go along. Just require people to name each spell as it is generated and record them for later re-use.

QUALITY: Acceptable

VALUE: Satisfied
Great ideas, piss poor execution. Still, with some work this could be made into a great product.

A very solid system from a very good friend of mine....but the fact that the spellcaster in here obviates the need for a Sorcerer class is a minus, IMHO. If you think the sorcerer is underpowered, this could be great. Me, I think the base assumption is a bit flawed -- but definately points for originality and innovative nature of the book.

I found Elements of Magic to be just what I'm looking for, to enhance the RPG experience with D20. I'm also looking forward to the upgrade of this system.

This product has some neat views on magic. With that being said, I am not sure if I could use this in my campaigns as it changes the magical classes a bit. If anything this would be best used as a replacement to the existing magic system in 3/3.5.

I really like this system. It has several areas that are not explained as well as I'd like, but that doesn't detract from my like of this product.

A very good alternative to the spellcasting provided in the core rulebooks. I like the variants of core classes as well. If you get tired of vanilla style D&D and need a variant, I strongly recommend this book.

Interesting take on magic for D&D. I'm not sure I'd use it in game, but I enjoyed the read.

An interesting product, but there is a lot of work involved in putting these spellcasting classes and system into effect in a campaign. The artwork is a bit cartoonish for my taste. I have yet to put the system into play in an actual game, but it seems well thought-out.

An interesting attempt at a more flexible magic system. Unfortunately the flexibility is bought, as is often the case, at the expense of ease of use. It is somewhat reminiscent of rolemaster. Take that as you will.

Pretty good. Not very balanced with existing magic using classes; you either need to adopt the classes that come in the book or put in some serious conversion time. Still, there is a lot of good stuff here; if a more exotic, point-based magic system is what you are after, then this document will save you a lot of trouble in implementing one.
