Colours of Magic: Chrome

Chrome magic is unique from the other 11 colors in many ways. It is not broken down into 3 domains, it doesn't have as many spells, and it doesn't have a "core class".

However, it has one domain that has a lot of versatility, and its spells may be used in multiple ways (they are basically the "alignment" spells). And there are six Prestige Classes that utilize it. In addition to countering alignments, the spells can be used to counter the colors.

Chrome is what you want when you want to fight other mages.

LIKED: It is a good completion to the Chromatic Magic line.

QUALITY: Excellent

VALUE: Very Satisfied
This reminds me of the charts in the 1st Edition AD&D City System boxed set. The difference is that each "option" is fleshed out just a little more, so as to make it more useful and aid the GM in coming up with something that fits the setting better (often with small details that are easy to overlook).

If used in a group where the GM tends to only bring up what is important, though, the PCs will have a lot of "red herrings". :)

LIKED: As advertised, it is great for giving the game some quick facts that have logic to them.

QUALITY: Excellent

VALUE: Satisfied
This is a decent review of the history of the service history of the Cobra. I had never realized the evolution that aircraft can take, from the prototype to the service model refits.

I hope that more vehicle histories can be put out. My Janes Aircraft just doesn't have this much detail (being only a page per entry).

The weapon stats have an asterisk for their weight, purchase DC, and restriction. It would have been better had those columns not been on the table in the first place, but that is only my disdain for redundancy speaking.

LIKED: A good overview of the "life" of the Cobra and Super Cobra.

DISLIKED: Some pictures would have been nice, but I assume that it would be hard to get them due to copyright purposes. But for those that played with G.I. Joe as a kid, this is the "Dragonfly" flown by Wild Bill; it would have been more fitting for COBRA to have it, though (given its name).

QUALITY: Acceptable

VALUE: Satisfied
Illusionist characters have always been a fun character concept, but I have always been disappointed in their application as a specialist wizard. True, being a specialist was better treatment than they had in 1st Edition, but even in the 2nd and 3rd edition PHBs there was something lacking.

The Chymurge is an illusionist with style. It has what I was looking for in the official illusionist classes. One interesting trait is their use of cards. When a chymurge wants to cast a spell, he uses a card that symbolizes the correct spell. Another trait to casting spells with cards is that a chymurge might be able to emulate spells of other colours.

And now we know where the Deck of Illusions came from. Oh, and never let others see your hand.

LIKED: As with the other Colours of magic, it provides a good twist that makes me want to immediately make a character that uses said Colour and start playing. And that's really good, because I usually just glean d20 pdfs for ideas to use when I run other games (like GURPS 4e).

QUALITY: Excellent

VALUE: Very Satisfied
As usual, I find it hardest to reply to such positive reviews. I am actually quite pleased with how this one came out as well, which makes it harder. I think I will just say thanks again! And warmest of regards, Evan

"Who wants to be a Diviner, anyway?"

Sure, divination magic is great for the party, but who wants to play one that specializes in that? It is better to toss Fireballs, right?

The Oracle, being the master of White Magic, is one such "Diviner" that is worth playing. The spells are the usual "divination" spells, plus spells that are normally cleric-only, such as the sort like Bless and Miracle, as well as the "summoning spells". This makes for a character that is very good to have around in a party, especially a party that likes to know what is going on and plan accordingly.

The Oracle also has neat little class abilities that are chosen every even level (even though the text has it spaced out a bit more, this is the only need for errata that I have noticed). These abilities are chosen from a list, and all exemplify neat little benefits that an Oracle should have. They are all worth getting.

LIKED: It is a well-designed concept

QUALITY: Excellent

VALUE: Very Satisfied
I haven't said it in public till now, but thanks very much for all these reviews, Jeremy. I really find it hard to respond to such positive remarks with anything more articulate than *Aw, Thanks mate!* I will get that error in the description corrected and send a revision to everyone. You are correct, the ESP abilities are granted every even level, as per the chart. Thanks again, and warm regards, Evan

This is great, makes me just want to play a Devolutionist right now. It would make Severian proud, as not only is it a good class for executioners (and many of them get employment as such), it is an entertaining take on the stereotypical necromancer.

Like their opposite color, the Devolutionist can cast a pre-emptive spell that is like a contingency but limited to the Purple spells. It's great because even when someone whacks you (and you still get hurt), you have just cast a spell on your attacker. It makes it so that other people will not want to attack you (or maybe just do it from a range, or let someone else attack you and take the spell).

The ability to turn undead is a nice bonus, too. No more need to multiclass as a cleric/necromancer, just be a Devolutionist and get all the same fun in one class. And if you still want to be a cleric, it's a great bonus.

LIKED: Clever use of the "Necromancer" type spells

QUALITY: Excellent

VALUE: Very Satisfied
Some have commented that the names are silly or that it doesn't do a good job about describing how to make a system for your own world. While I would change some of the names, and it is likely that I might change some other details, it DOES give you guidelines. The best way to show something is to do it. Lead by example. By adding in "first do this, and then this" would have been insulting to the intellect of any reader. Just look at it, and change what you want.

It is good inspiration to making the characters "marked by the stars" as the expression goes. Is it too powerful? No, unless you have only one PC that has it and the rest don't. If all PCs have it, it is not a problem. Many people seem to forget that power level of a given ability or advantage is subjective. What may be strong in one setting is weak in another.

Compare the Dark Sun materials to the Forgotten Realms, or the Forgotten Realms to Krynn.

Or just about any Rifts book :) Each book outdid the previously published book. :)

LIKED: Gave me some good inspiration

QUALITY: Acceptable

VALUE: Satisfied
Magic Merchants 1: House of the Transformed Toad

I recall going magic item shopping with the price lists that were found in Unearthed Arcana. 2nd Edition did away with those lists, but 3e not only brought them back, but gave the criteria for their prices in the first place.

But with bringing magic back on the market for all came the confusion of what would be good to offer to the party. Sure, a GM should decide what is available, but sometimes a player will ask for something and the GM wil have to sit there in silence as the answer is determined. Then comes the following question, how many are there? What about getting custom items? And so on.

This pdf is a good source of inspiration, and a good look at the business side of the whole situation.

LIKED: Gives a good example of a magic item shop, and it isn't a generic shop, either. It has some style.

QUALITY: Very Good

VALUE: Satisfied
Given the genre, I need to compare it to the Oriental Adventures book. In my opinion, it compares to it very nicely, and in some ways is superior. For the price that is especially true.

This book is geared more towards the characters, there is not a whole lot on having a campaign. For me, that is a Very Good Thing. The addition of a good way to track honor and the description of bloodlines are a very good addition to any campaign. The classes are superior to those that are found in Oriental Adventures. For example, the Samurai is not just a fighter clone with a neat weapon. From what I can tell, the classes seem to be well thought out and balanced (even though, to be honest, "balance" is always subjective anyway, so people that say that something is too powerful or too weak might disagree).

LIKED: Martial Arts! "CLERIC!" has been called at many gaming tables when a party member is wounded. The needs of having a healer in the party has been important to just about any adventuring group.

The Physician is a great class to have for that role. It can be a divine-appointed healer (as the Cleric-lovers might suggest), or it can be a type of specialist mage. Either way, it is a good class. One particularly useful special ability of the class is a form of the Contingency spell, where the caster pre-casts a healing spell on himself. You can even raise yourself from the dead. That is really good for those, "uh-oh, the healer just died! Now what?" situations. Besides, it is a good thing for a healer to benefit from his own power. Being the "party healer" need not be a bad thing anymore.

LIKED: As with the other Colours of Magic, it is a rather good twist on the standard spell organization.

QUALITY: Excellent

VALUE: Very Satisfied
Colours of Magic: Indigo

Date Added: 03/13/2005 00:00:00

As with the others, I am impressed with this product. The magic of Indigo is your "charm person" and "render stupid" type spells. The Skeptomancer is what most people think of when they think of an enchanter (that is, charming people, not making magic items, which is what the Brown magic is for). I can see the Fae folk being strong in this magic.

As usual, I enthusiastically suggest these books to anyone that wants magic in their campaigns. The rules themselves are not changed, just the "spell schools". The magic is given a clever and well-developed method for classification. Even if you don't care to use the colors per se, you could call the color groups something else.

LIKED: Like the other Colours of Magic, it is well balanced and provides an interesting way to use magic, without actually changing any rules.

QUALITY: Excellent

VALUE: Very Satisfied
I have to admit that while I really like the Colours of Magic products, I delved into this one with some skepticism. It is because I don't really like the color Brown; I associate it with feces. :) If it is brown, it must be crap, right?

I was very wrong. Even though the color is icky brown, in this case brown is good. This is a good resource, and makes me actually want to play a spellcaster that uses Brown magic. The Demiurge has magic that is normally considered to be "enchantments", spells like teleport, and the force-type spells like the Bigby spells. It is a very good class for a character that wants to be an Enchanter and/or Alchemist.

I know that some people do like the color brown. Good for them, we all have our opinions.

LIKED: I like the Colours of Magic, I recommend getting them all.

QUALITY: Excellent

VALUE: Very Satisfied
Battle Armor

There are 10 types of powered armor. One of them is for a 1930's sort of steampunk game, but it does remind me a bit of the "Silent Storm" armor types. I don't like steampunk, so that didn't interest me.

However, the other 9 armors are good. One is a form of concealed armor, another reminds me of what they would wear in a sort of "Running Man" competition, and I could see soldiers wearing the others.

The artwork is good, too.

LIKED: Some great examples of what you can do with power armor

DISLIKED: I didn't care for the layout.
