Dark Millennium v1.0 (EABA)
Publisher: BTRC
by Stuart A. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 04/10/2005 00:00:00

Undead. Dark Ages. End of the World.

No, really, it is the end of the world. But until that happens, there's lots of stuff for characters of all kinds to do. You can try and preserve some of the holy relics to prevent the total destruction of life on earth. You can attempt to rescue the innocent people of a town under seige from the undead forces of darkness. Or you can just try and stay alive and not end up undead yourself.

Dark Millenium is not for the feint of heart. This is a serious setting whose elements of horror are truly horrifying - not a hollywood-style splat-fest, the horror here is personal and spiritual.

The quality of the writing is excellent. The source material is detailed and seems to be well researched. The setting is coherent, consistent, and sufficiently detailed to enable a GM to get straight down to work building adventures.

Even if you don't use EABA (and you should give EABA a look...), Dark Millenium is highly recommended as a sourcebook for any system.

LIKED: Quality presentation; great game for mature players.

DISLIKED: Nothing.

QUALITY: Excellent

VALUE: Very Satisfied
Haven't had a chance to play it yet, but the Active Exploits Diceless system has worked well in other games, and I don't forsee any problems with this game. The setting is well fleshed-out and consistent (as consistent as a world full of conspiricies and secret societies can be!) and looks like a lot of fun both for players and GMs.

I'm looking forward to running this.

LIKED: Good value for money. Consistent style. Doesn't take itself too seriously.

DISLIKED: Nothing to dislike :)

QUALITY: Excellent

VALUE: Very Satisfied
Ghost Stories: Horror Mystery Adventures

Another fun GenreDiversion game from pigames. I enjoy the simplicity and flexibility of the mechanics. The settings is adequately detailed for one-shot or short-run adventures. The sample adventures are a mixed bag - I think they need a bit more work to be fully consistent and playable, but I don't think the workload would be huge.

Overall looks like fun to play and run.

LIKED: Nicely written; easy to learn system.

DISLIKED: Bit vague in some portions of the sample adventures.

QUALITY: Very Good

VALUE: Very Satisfied
Pariah
Publisher: Rogue Publishing

Ever wanted to play a teenager with psychc abilities in a world that treat such abilities as less than welcome? If so, then Pariah is just what you're looking for.

One of the few commercial FUDGE settings, Pariah is great for a one-shot session or a short campaign, I don't really think it provides enough material for a long-running campaign.

With that in mind, the content is excellent. The background is well written and does well to capture the emotional distress on teens realising that they are "different". The default setting and adventure provides a good introduction to the sorts of conflicts and challenges the players will face.

Definitely one for strong roleplayers - not in any way a hack'n'slash.

LIKED: Well written, nicely presented, consistent setting.

DISLIKED: Nothing.

QUALITY: Very Good

VALUE: Very Satisfied
Bloodhollow

Having read it but not run it yet, it appears to be a reasonably entertaining module. Unless I missed something, there does appear to be a plot hole in that the "forge" that is referred to does not have its location described in the text; nor does it say how it may be destroyed (possibly a vital part of the adventure.)

The final major encounter has an intereting twist with good potential for roleplaying.

LIKED: Some interesting ideas, reasonably well presented. Could fit in to a much larger plot in interesting ways.

DISLIKED: Typos; lack of coherency in the plot (admittedly on one read-through); possible plot hole.

QUALITY: Very Good

VALUE: Satisfied
EABA v1.1
Publisher: BTRC
by Stuart A. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 02/06/2005 00:00:00

The first product I have bought from BTRC - purchased so I could play Nocturne (also from BTRC). I have to say I am extremely impressed with this system.

On first reading through it I thought it was extremely complicated and I didn't see how I could possibly learn it well enough to GM it. Then I sat down, created a couple of characters and played out some scenarios. I was very pleasently surprised by how easily and smoothly it played. You have a lot of control over the degree of crunchiness by using advanced/optional rules; the mechanics work well and the "universal table" relatin strength, distance, time, etc. actually works.

Being a "universal" system, you need to do some work if you are going to use these rules in your own setting, but that's half the fun :)

The "powers" section is particularly well done and seems to produce a balanced range of effects.

LIKED: System works very well; beautifully presented.

DISLIKED: Nada.

QUALITY: Excellent

VALUE: Very Satisfied
Nocturne v1.0a(EABA)
Publisher: BTRC
by Stuart A. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 02/06/2005 00:00:00

Nocturne is the reason I bought EABA - I wanted to run a good, dream-based setting with a decent set of rules.

I was definitely not disappointed. The integration of the dream world into the mundane is very well handled. The dream-specific skills work well in practice - my players had great fun trying to invent tactics that would achieve their desired results in the dream world.

I know that the author - Greg Porter - calls himself "infrastructure guy" but he write really interesting settings. (See my comments on Ythrek also.)

The details of the dream setting, and the antagonists - the mysterious Others - are very well written and make many possible plotlines leap out at me. Most enjoyable; highly recommended.

LIKED: Everything.

DISLIKED: Nothing.

QUALITY: Excellent

VALUE: Very Satisfied
Ythrek v1.1(EABA)
Publisher: BTRC
by Stuart A. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 02/06/2005 00:00:00

My second EABA setting (Nocturne was my first) and this exceeded my expectations. I expected a fairly generic low-magic, post-apocalyptic setting for the EABA system. What I got was detailed, interesting, unique, and very playable.

I have only run a short adventure so far, but my players are keen for more. They want to explore this world - even knowing what a dangerous place it is. I think that's the sign of a good setting - the players actually want to know more about it.

Very well presented and written - like all of BTRC's products.

LIKED: The magic system; the city setting; the opportunities for everything from dungeon-crawling to urban espionage.

DISLIKED: Would have liked a few "creature" examples. But it's not a huge lack.

QUALITY: Excellent

VALUE: Very Satisfied
I haven't played or GMed a SF game for years, so it was really nice to pick up a fun, simple to use, and well-produced product like this and be able to run a game after reading it through a couple of times.

The system is easy to use and works well. The setting background suits the theme and provides many obvious adventure hooks.

I'd seriously consider running an extended campaign with HardNova][

LIKED: Simple playable system; very easy to get up and running.

DISLIKED: Some of the artwork is a bit too cheesy.

QUALITY: Excellent

VALUE: Very Satisfied
