OSRIC
Publisher: First Edition Society
by Robert B. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 06/02/2022 23:44:53

This is a truly amazing product! It boils down AD&D 1e into a single tome with fantastic organization and very comprehensive errata. It's what 1e should have been the first time around. In the very few cases where OSRIC and the original books disagree, OSRIC is usually correct (with over a decade's worth of errata) and in places where judgement was required I think OSRIC got it right. OSRIC ditches the monk class which, in my 40+ years of gaming I've only seen played once, and improves the game. There are tons of charts, tons of tables & lists and a fantastic index. If I was going to run a new 1e campaign I'd go with OSRIC instead of the original core books, so superior is the presentation.

OSRIC is truly a triumph and a landmark acheivement in the world of TTRPGs. I'd call it a must-have! Highly recommended.

Old-School Essentials: Basic Rules
Publisher: Necrotic Gnome

Pretty good product overall. I personally find the rave reviews about "organization" to be exagerated but it's certainly attractive. Personally I'd suggest skipping this and going with Basic Fantasy RPG unless you're really dead-set on OSE. The art is copious if mediocre and the entire presentation is nice.

Spelljammer: Adventures in Space (2e)
Publisher: Wizards of the Coast
by Robert B. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 06/02/2022 16:42:21

Overall I am pretty happy with this one! While I have two copies of the boxed set it was never originally sold as a hardcover so far as I know, so this is a nice surprise. The printing & binding is quite good, no issues there. On a scale of one to ten I'd give the clarity of the print maybe 7.5 or so. It's clearly done from a scan, but a decent one. Certainly it's better than some of the volumes of clerical spells but a bit short of the quality of best scans (and well short of the super 1e core book reissues). It could be better I have no serious complaints and it's quite legible.

As at least one other review mentions, the maps are basically useless. There's no good way to include huge maps in a regular book I suppose. This isn't a huge deal to me as I have the original maps from the boxed sets. Personally I'd rather the maps be reduced in size to fit vs cut up and strewn across many pages but others may disagree. Still, this seems to be the worst way to do them.

As to the material itself it's wonderful! Spelljammer is something that was devisive from the beginning with some people loving it and others hating it. It's unlikely my review will change any minds but I've always really loved it. It is what it is, so if you won't want AD&D in space this won't appeal to you. But if you're open to some different ideas it can be a great way to expand the campaign or a way to link campaign settings in a novel & interesting way. Ship handling rules are clean and easy to use. The way gravity is handled is quite clever and very much in the spirit of how D&D generally works and the rules for handling air/breathing are quite good. Spelljammer adds some really interesting races to the game such as the Griff and many nice ship designs are provided.

The Spelljammer ship/arifact and the Rock of Bral are great additions and a good springboard for a space-based AD&D campaign. They're less useful than they might be due to the maps being chopped up but you can extract the material with patience. A good option would be to get the PDF as well as the book to just print the ones you need.

Again, I'm delighted to be able to have a hardcover of this book! The quality could be a little better and I may quibble with the decision to cut up the maps but this well worth the asking price to me!!

Basic Fantasy RPG 3rd Edition
Publisher: The Basic Fantasy Project
by Robert B. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 03/08/2022 03:38:50

Basic Fantasy RPG is one of the true gems of the OSR world! It's a great way to get started in tabletop gaming. It's perhaps the first retroclone and still one of the best. Anyone who grew up playing D&D in the late 70s or early 80s will instantly find themselves at home. It keeps the core mechanics of the game while making a few intuitive changes like ascending armor class. The core of the system is very simple and easy to learn, and all you need to play is just this book, a few dice and some friends! Yet the game is strongly supported with dozens of supplements as well as a vibrant, active online community. BFRGP has its own forum and the author posts there frequently. The core book really is a self contained game but you can as much or as little as you like! Supplements add rules for wizards, new spells, new/old classes like the Scout, Paladin & Ranger, or you can run it lean and tight. This book will give you the basic races and classes, the mechanics and combat rules, spells & weapons and enough monsters to get you started. And there's a pretty well developed campaign setting you can get for free!

That leads to the next thing, and this is huge- the book is free! You can download it for free and see what you think of it. If you like it- and you probably will- you can continue to use the PDFs or buy a hard copy. The hard copy is very inexpensive and even the hardcover is only $14!

Mechanically it's very much like the old B/X D&D of the late 70s/early 80s. You have the familiar classes and the races you'd expect. Hit dice, weapon damage, it's all like you remember. The art in the book varies between really nice and cheap'n'cheeful but the entire presentation is clean and professional. A beginner will pick it up easily but there's plenty of material out there to expand the game. Adding all the optional rules will get you pretty close to the pre-UA AD&D 1e.

In case I haven't been clear I love this book! BFRPG is a great game, one which I still play weekly with a steady group. You can't go wrong with it, highly recommended!

Unearthed Arcana (1e)
Publisher: Wizards of the Coast
by Robert B. [Verified Purchaser]

Great book! I'll only brielfy comment on the actual content; the book is 40 years old and you probably know already if you like it. I love it and incorporated much of it into my game back in the day. The Cavalier class is one of my favorites and really helped me gel my notion of what paladins would be in my campaigns. As for the POD, it's very nice. The paper is thicker and brighter than the original and it's very well bound (in stark contrast to the early TSR books which all seemed to fall apart within a few months). Mine arrived very well packaged; in spite of this one corner was dented/smashed a bit. Not a big deal as this will be used at the gaming table. Overall I can't complain. It's crisp and easy to read. Whatever source they had to scan or import it's a great one. This one looks like a regular printed book. Recommended!

Priest's Spell Compendium Vol 2 (2e)
Publisher: Wizards of the Coast
by Robert B. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 01/31/2022 02:21:40

This one is truly outstanding! I reviewed the other two volumes which I found to be kind of mediocre from a scan quality standpoint. But they must have found an immaculate book to scan with this one! It's very crisp and dark, quite easy to read. This volume is so much better than the other two! As far as the content, it's fantastic! Truly mandatory if you're trying to create vivid, multi-dimensional specialty priests in a 2E game. I only wish they did a hardcover POD of this one! But I'm very safisfied, thanks!

Priest's Spell Compendium Vol 1 (2e)
Publisher: Wizards of the Coast
by Robert B. [Verified Purchaser]

Awesome book, reasonably good scan. I'm not sure what their source is? Maybe they cut up an old book and scanned it? If so very little cleanup work was done (apparently no OCR and reformat, this is essentially a scan/photocopy). The background color/texture makes it a bit blurry in places and a bit fatiguing to read for long periods of time. I'd rate the scan as maybe a 7 of 10. Absolutely usable but not really pretty or enjoyable to peruse. Still, content wise this is a gold mine! A true must have for a 2e game! I just wish they'd have scrounged up a bit better sample to scan.

Meh. This is a fantastic book but a really subpar scan. I got all three of them. Vol 1 is medicre visually, maybe a 7 out of 10. Vol 2 is an exceptionally clean scan, very nice with crips black text! But Vol 3 is really really poor! Fuzzy as though there was vaseline on the bed of the scanner, and very faded/light. I dunno if they had just a single poor condition book to scan or what but this one is pretty disappointing. But to be clear the material is terrific! If you're a 2e player or just want to add some POP to a 1e game this book is a treasure trove. I just wish they had a better quality scan of it.

For Gold & Glory
Publisher: God Emperor Games
by Robert B. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 07/29/2021 17:18:19

This is a really outstanding work! It's fully compatible with 2e which is of course the main draw. Like most/many of you I have multiple copies of the books I use but they're getting more and more expensive in the secondary market. This is a great way to get "user" books or to outfit a new group. It's pretty much 2e with much better organization and rewritten for clarity. The PDF is great and FREE! But I did also buy the standard color hardback. It's a gem! The color is greata and the binding is fantastic. I wish my early 1e and 2e books had been bound this well! Several of them fell apart in a couple months. I anticipate this POD tome to hold up to some hard use.

Highly recommended in whatever format you prefer. The PDF is awesome for research and casual reading (at age 52 I just can't read regular print as easily as I could when I was 20). Even if one has the PDF it's nice to have the hard copy at the gaming table.
