Not a complete game. This sucker came out in 2013 and was supposed to release two more books to make the darn thing work. The stuff it has for the classes is great stuff and it was fun to try out. But the complete lack of proper GM support is a bit of a joke. I mean if you look in the index for Stake to Stake a vampire, you get rules for a Stake Out (which is totally out of theme for Vamp Hunting at least linguistically.) I mean I have been running games for years so I can cook up a dozen different vampire rules or any other creature of the night so its not that big of a deal. Its just that the book is SO full of stuff you don't need and MISSING things you DO need. If it were a modern D&D book set up. It would be as if the spells of your player's handbook were removed and replaced with part of the GM guide, mostly superfluous parts that are largely for new GMs. And THEN they never published the monster book, or the GM guide. EVER. There is good stuff and I can use it so its not a total waste, but Big let down, and I probably wont pick it out again unless I want to add an odd duck class to another DCC based game. I say save your money and just find something else.

Creator Reply:
Hi Alan, Thanks for your review. I'm sorry that the second book didn't come to fruition. I'm not going to make excuses other than to say "life comes at you fast". I knew certain life situations might potentially derail the second book so I put everything I could into the first one. That's why it seems like a player's handbook, gm guide amalgam. These are the materials I found that I used the most to run the game. The spells are what wound up killing me. I have offered to pay writers to finish up the draft I began a while ago (given that I no longer have the time to invest in it) but none of that worked out. Your take is fair and I'm sorry to have disappointed you. Again, if time becomes available, I may be able to piece together the second book or try to get what I have in printable PDF form for download. I don't think there would be a three book set out of this. That was an idea that was bandied about briefly. I appreciate you sharing your point of view and expressing it here. Thanks for giving TA a try. I can say the character classes are a lot of fun in DCC. They balance well with the DCC core classes. My old gaming group used them interchangeably with vanilla DCC and it was a lot of fun for us.

Vampire: the Masquerade (V5 pre-alpha playtest)

I loved it. It was a great rule set, and a great story. Full of corruption, retribution, and lots of Vampiric Flavor. The Compulsions and Hunger system were Really nice. I think I would like the mechanics altered a bit in later versions. Mostly that the only way to reduce your last hunger die is by killing to be reserved for low humanity or some other similar location. I feel like the possibility of being a benign vampire, is what creates the most potential for corruption. Otherwise I thought it was fantastic. Hunger dice are different colored dice to create complications, Compulsions help you act like a vampire when you roll ones on Hunger dice. And there are 3 compulsions specific to the clans instead of the usual clan flaws, Really nice. Makes every clan prone to acting more like their clan should. Really Really worth a try. Be warened this is a PVP module, One of the PCs is opposed to the others in secret, but the blood bond helps keep that player from being too oppositional to the group, creating a more subtile effect. A great version of the game, HUGE Improvement. And a good fun scenario.

The Most interesting thing about this book is that it has no rules in it.....The book focuses Solely on character creation and role playing....It does not even tell you how to roll dice. All of that stuff is in the hands of the Keeper, as it should be. A pretty bold move for a book of this type and I like it. A cool book. It has extra character options lots of great information about the era and the genre to help role playing. If you are a player it is a great option.

This game is really cool IMO. A very elegant and quick game. I have seen lots of quick games, but this one has mechanics and aspects that I actually find compelling rather than just functional. I think I would use this as an alternative for some of my players for some stories. It is quick simple and interesting none the less. I think this one is right up there with Dungeon World and DCC. And it is even easier than Fate Accelerated. I would rather use this to introduce new players to RPGs than 5th edition. Its good. Check it out.....

I really wanted to like this game. As a fan of the good old World of Darkness and lover of drama and easy systems, I loved the idea of a quick and easy approach to those types of characters especially with some story balance included...but Cest la voie. The Vamp is the main thing I have a problem with but unfortunately as the iconic character type of the genre it is the crumbling corner stone that brings down the entire edifice for me. To sum it up the creators tried to make the game a deconstructionist metaphor for social interaction rather than a dramatic tale of monsters and monster hunters. The Vamp has almost no vampire abilities but lots of vague social manipulation abilities, no shape shifting, no mind control, no supernatural fortitude. Some of the other characters by contrast are perfect with gobs of iconic stuff Weakend by silver ect. Anyways. It ruined everything for me and I have no desire to play or run it as a result. I dont think this degree deconstructionism is a valid approach to rpgs or much for fiction. It is frequently taken too far and often ruins the gravitas of a story in fiction, and in RPGs.... Lets just say I wish I had my money back. "its a metaphor" is not sufficient excuse for why your game is running with a gaping hole in its tire. Other good aspects give it a 2 instead of a 1 but they are just not enough to warrent playing this little "experement".

Doctor Who: Adventures in Time and Space Limited Edition Hardcover Edition

This is hardly a comprehensive review, more of a first look. I have not played the game yet just looked at the system.

I am amazed how similar this is to Unisystem. It would be unbelievably easy to translate characters between the two games. At first this turned me off in a way and I really felt like Doctor Who the RPG was just fan service. Especially with the lets play the doctor and all his companions play style. I dug in a little deeper, and I did like using attributes to track damage instead of the more American hitpoint methodologies. Then I saw the innitiative. The innitiative is a beautiful beautiful thing. It along with the attribute damage (which I havent quite figgured out the nubmbers for yet but) allows you to put as much drama and mechanics into trying talking to and reasoning with an NPC or other character as most games put into combat alone. This is SO HUGE to help live up to Doctor Who levels of storytelling where often the most amazing thing that happens is a dialogue or a soliloquy that changes EVERYTHING. When you can put just as much interest fun and effot into ANYTHING in the game besides just fighting and literally use the same types of mechanics for ALL of it? Man that is something. I cant wait to try it out and see if it plays as well as it looks like it does. (I want to do a story of a Human collony caught in the midst of the Time War where the Doctor is elusive and mysterious and danger is everywhere and where Human compassion is fleeting yet Powerfull) Now to just find some players.

Monsters and Other Childish Things: Completely Monstrous Edition

I really love this game,

Silly kids with silly monsters in a gloomy setting set up so many fun opportunities for short super fun little games. My favorite to date was a Monsters Redo of the Breakfast club, where the characters had to fight a bunch of school and 80s monsters like the Duo of Office Maxx (who shot staples from his face and had staple remover claws for hands) and ZeRocxx, the Copy machine that turned into a bird that Shot bad copies at the group, dive bombed them with broken ink cartridges and sonic attacked them with PC Load Letter error alarms. Best of all was the confrontation with Maxx Hedrome....I will leave that one to your imagination. Its a super great premise and it is well done and easy to implement. I recommend every one try it.
