Great deck plans but it is somewhat irritating that storage for consumables and water (drinking, showering, etc) are never given space (cupboards either).

The description "Free Scout Ship" provides a drawing. NO FLOORPLAN. NO STATS. Once you've bought this adventure, you find out that there isn't actually a ship, but if the pc's finish the adventure, then Scout Service might grant the use of a ship but without stats or plans. Also, zero effort made toward drawings throughout. Draw a square, fill with brown, call it a building.
Other than that, the adventure is good.

Thier book statements regarding equipment..."The equipment listed in this chapter runs the gamut of weaponry, armor,...etc." WHAT A COMPLETELY JOKE. However, they do write, "contents of which are left for the GM and players to determine". It's a good way of saying, "we give the range of stuff...however, we don't actually give the stuff, its up for the players to make up."

What a pain in the backside trying to get into Forums where, possibly, errata can be found. That's not happening.

I hate when pc races have wings (ride/walk/through the woods, through the doors, take a stagecoach). Otherwise...I like it.

No layout for the city. If you want one, you'd have to purchase the layout separately and it sucks and it gets a single star review (I'd give a review but I wouldn't spend a nickle on the map. Zero info of people/things/names inside of any buildings. Just blurry blobs of square and rectangle roof tops.)

I like this ruleset. Character creation is fairly simple but the "Motivation, Nature, Allegiance and Special Traits" can give players a sense of actually putting the "character" into playing the pc character. I like brutal fighting and has options. Spell list... Page 410. "Sounds & Lights" list. 2nd level spell: "Tongues". Says:"For the duration, the caster can speak (but not understand) the language of target sentient humanoid creature". Okaaay...the Wizard put a lot of energy in saying something that not only doesn't understand what he/she is saying but cannot even listen to a conversation. But in generally, the lists are better as they don't overwhelm anything than many other systems do, which is in my opinion a good thing.
Published before completed. Poorly written. I'm giving a third star simply because there a few of ideas.

Scott writes great thoughtfully reviews. I could have given the same stars for this product but I can't.
I had a huge problem with putting 20+ pages on the population, names of cities and towns in every state, the number of missiles may have been blasted the crap out of those sites. 27 pages!! The first pages (page 277-279) give a great view of the background of the story and that's really good. But then..pages pages 280-303 are completely useless. One page could have given a "normal" hemispheres. The next page with the hemisphere with all the hundreds of dots showing those ereas which where wiped out., another page for 50 years after the war, then another 50 yeats, etc.
There's a lot of pages that could have been used wisely.

Wade G.,
Thank you for taking the time to write a review. I like your suggestion of the hemisphere dot map for locations of missile impacts. I am forwarding that to the development group for possible inclusion in the next version. The original game was very much a Cold War-era game. The first edition being published in 1980, the missile strike tables have been an integral part of the game through each successive edition. They were updated for the 4th. edition but did not substantially divert resources from the rest of the book's development. Removing those tables would not significantly improve the product or price, and would be missed by some of our long time fans. I use them frequently when building new scenarios to know what the base condition of the area looked like. You are correct in that if we were to build a brand new game today we would not expend resources on building those tables and putting them in the main gamebook. Although they would probably be a candidate for a world-building supplement aimed at the Project Directors that create their own scenarios. |

Helmut's review is correct. A cheap scanner was used and some pages very slightly off-center, so the edge of a bit of text at the top of the page was partially clipped. 99.9% of the scan is okay, though it's slightly less sharp than a good scan.. Until the publisher scans a decent copy (how hard would that really be??) I'll give this scan a "3" star due to their sheer laziness. It should be priced at half cost.
