Transportation Sensations: Carts & Wagons
Publisher: Gabriel Pickard

This is a fantastic set and the most exhaustive images for carts and wagons on DTRPG at the time of this review! The set is fantastic. I'm using the images to print and mount on foam board because my group uses 2-D counters on a real table top. This would get five stars except for the following:

  • The wagons and animals have shadows that outline them. These may work well on a VTT, but when printed the shadows kind of blur the image.
  • I thought the images were sized relative to each other, but they are not. It seems the carts may be one size and the wagons another. I had to compare horses and wagons to ensure they were all sized correctly relative to each other. Not hard, but time consuming.

I look forward to trying out more from this publisher!

Petty Gods: Revised & Expanded Edition

THIS IS MY FAVORITE RPG BOOK in all my years of gaming (beginning circa 1983)! I have an extensive collection of fantasy RPG books and am a huge fan of the OSR "movement". With that said, I'd never give up this ONE book. It is a delight to read; this is the book that gets removed from my shelf the most!

The book is more like a rogue's gallery in that each "petty god" is an individual entity. Many have interwoven stories and relationships, which is an incredible touch. At the beginning of the tome, there is a list of powers that all deities are expected to have, then the book goes into individual listings. However, I've chosen to disregard any "divinity" to these entities, instead making them unique NPCs. Power-level varies, of course, but all of the characters are memorable in very relatable ways! There are tragic figures, flippant figures, pitiful figures and, of course, petty figures!

Thank you to all the contributors and editor that made this tome possible! I can't recommend this book enough!

Treat or Trick

This is a great adventure! I purchased it about two hours before I was to DM a game for two friends last night. Wanting a Halloween-ish adventure, I thought this would do nicely. It did.

Kudos to the author: at seven pages, it was easily digestible and full of seeds for ideas. It gives off a "take it and run with it vibe" for the DM. It gives suggestions on ways to take the game, but leaves the choice to the players and DM.

There is just enough detail to get the mind racing with ideas, and thankfully the author didn't get bogged down in too much backstory, NPCs, etc. that can make a short adventure impossible to run if you don't have much preparation time as a DM (example: there are only two NPCs of note necessary to remember any detail about).

I sunk about 15 - 20 minutes into reading this thing, and (non-consecutively, I might add), and I was extremely comfortable running it for my friends. We had such a good time, that I had to come clean that it wasn't my own adventure just to give credit to the author.

I will actively seek out more work by him in hopes they are as easily digestable and enjoyable as this one!

Blackpowder Fantasy Set
Publisher: Arion Games
by Lee W. [Verified Purchaser]

Wow, am I excited! These Blackpowder Fantasy miniatures are so good, they are begging for a rules set to be made just for them! I'd love to play a wargame based off these figures alone. Best of all, although the range of miniatures in the set range from humans, demihumans, and large humanoids, they are all unified by a common theme and rendering.

Two words: Cannon Golem!!

Another two words: Bomb Chucker!!

And yet another: Troll Artillery!!

The creativity in this set is amazing - so much so that I'd love to see a set devoted to just Lizard Men, Orc, Dwarven, and Goblin musketeers separately!!

The Dwarf Duelist figure is absolutely amazing! Oddly enough, the Lizard Man gunner could pass for a sci-fi character - even a Star Trek Gorn with a phaser rifle!

Palace Fae Set
Publisher: Arion Games
by Lee W. [Verified Purchaser]

Fey, or "Fae" in this case, are under-represented in fantasy gaming in my opinion. Luckily Arion Games has taken it upon themselves to help us fans of 2D and 3D gaming aids add this magical element to our games!

Firstly, the artist chose a neat coloring technique; the fae stand out from the normal coloring and shading used for the "big folk" in other sets. There's a good representation here, too. The Koit is a wonderful example of fae found in some modern works on the subject. The Pooklings can easily stand in for "Borrowers" or "Littles".

The Gnomes appear to be representative of some children's literature gnomes: they are dressed in drab clothing and one has a rock pick. These aren't the gnomes represented in one particular popular work on gnomes from the Seventies, for example.

There are other examples, too, but I won't give those away!

I really hope there's a "Fae II" on the drawing boards!

Future Armada: Drake
Publisher: 0-hr

UPDATED REVIEW:

I've since discovered that the oversized print images are located in the "Art" folder included in the file package. It is nice to know that these oversized print images were actually included with the product. However, I think the publisher should include a note somewhere saying they are not with the map pdf, but rather with the art (?) images.

With these files "discovered", I give this product a 4.5* out of 5 (rounded to 5).

*Needs clearer instructions on where the oversized prints are.

ORIGNIAL REVIEW:

I purchased "Future Armada: Drake" specifically to use the composite 24" x 60" image of the Drake for a game session. I had the image printed out on an oversized printer, even after the employee at the print shop told me that printing the 24" x 60" image on corresponding paper would distort the image (stretch it top to bottom).

The employee was correct: the 24" x 60" print was distorted and unusable. I tried a 22" x 36" print out of desperation, trying to salvage something for my game, but of course the image was too small to retain the 1" = 5 feet scale.

Unlike other products that advertise oversized print possibilities, this product seemed to simply have an 8.5" x 11" composite image be intended for printing at 24" x 60".

Also unlike other products, print "options" and "suggestions" are virtually non-existent. It would have been nice to have some "cues" for printing (much like those included in "12 to Midnight/Fabled Environments" products). I would not be surprised if the publisher responded to my criticism by saying that the composite image was not intended to be printed oversized- even though it is supposedly in oversized scale! Inf act, now that I type this review away from my copy of the file, I'm wondering if I could have possibly printed the "wrong" image. A printing guide should be included for those willing to print oversized.

Regardless of being out cash for useless prints, the actual 8.5" x 11" pages of color tiles are beautiful. I guess I'll blow a color ink cartridge (or two) and print these at home...

3.5 (rounded to 4) out of 5
