100 one-page descriptions of fantasy kingdoms with and without magic. Some standard, some bizarre. Some connected to others. Nice.

This book consists of 100 high fantasy realms. Each includes a brief description of the world in question as well as adventure ideas. Among them are a land ruled by intelligent undead, a land controlled by mercenaries brought in to reign in the local theives guild, and (an old standby) a land ruled by magicians. With 100 kingdoms to look at, consider, and adapt to your personal vision, there is literally somehting for eveyone!

The descriptions of each realm is brief, a few paragraphs generally. Some might look at that as a drawback, but I do not. I quit using Dragonlance and Dark Sun years ago because I got sick of the authors of the novels taking the world in directions I did not want to go. The descriptions in this book are brief enough to inspire creativity, but not long enough to have players shireking "You can't do that, it says on page 36 that there are no lycanthroes in this world" as if they are quoting holy scripture!

My one suggestion (not a complaint but a suggestion) is that there is no table of contents. I wouls suggest adding one to future editions.

Much like most of Postmortem Studios' other offerings, 100 Fantasy Kingdoms serves up one hundred fantasy realms (they're not all kingdoms, in the technical) sense at a rate of one per page. Each page gives you a paragraph or two on history, three or four paragraphs about who rules each 'kingdom' and how, and four adventure seeds. Although not all the ideas are totally original - there is a wizard kingdom and an undead kingdom, to cite a couple of well-worn ideas - most are at least serviceable. The adventure seeds ensure that there is a least some degree of utility for even those kingdoms.

I would be inclined to give this product a solid three stars except for the appalling lack of proofreading. I know that it seems pedantic to lecture people about this but, for the record, ITS is the possessive form of IT, whereas IT'S is the conjunction of IT IS. If the author could learn this simple rule, more than half the mistakes would be eliminated.

LIKED: Good utility; solid adventure seeds; some original ideas

Compared to his rants in some earlier products, the author's anti-piracy message is less emotional and more conciliatory here.

DISLIKED: Some unoriginal ideas; author could use the services of an editor/proofreader

QUALITY: Acceptable

VALUE: Satisfied
Honestly, I swear, the more I send these things to people to proofread the more grief I get about editing/proofreading. AFAIK the 'its/it's' issue is under control and I do find that the grammatically pedantic do seem to completely miss the point of products when reviewing them. How about saying something about the content rather than moaning about a few misplaced apostrophes?

There are lots of good ideas here, but they tend strongly towards the "high fantasy" type, where each is based on a very unusual theme. If this is what you're looking for, it's fantastic. If you're looking for something more "low fantasy" or intricate political situations, this won't be as good.

LIKED: Good ideas and easy to read.

DISLIKED: A little more detail, varied political situations, and editing would have helped a lot.

QUALITY: Acceptable

VALUE: Satisfied
I've already submitted a review to rpg.net about this fantastic product. It does very much what it says on the tin - one hundred fantasy kingdoms, usually based on a clever high-fantasy theme (a nation composed of a thousand doorways and rooms, acting as a secret society of wizards; a city owned and run by a great dragon who leverages her hoard for profit; a perfect kingdom resulting from a well-worded wish, now controlled by demons at the whim of one man). Get it if you're a fantasy GM - it's just chock full of ideas.

LIKED: See above.

DISLIKED: The names are a bit hokey - deliberately, I assume, to remind you what the kingdom's theme is.

QUALITY: Excellent

VALUE: Very Satisfied
A wonderful inspiration! Probably a third of the ideas here could be used in my current campaign, either as-is or with minimal tweaking, and the remainder are giving me ideas for the future. Highly recommended.

LIKED: Good organization, easy to use, excellent spur to the imagination! Reading this is giving me all kinds of ideas.

DISLIKED: Some grammatical errors and awkward sentence structure, but nothing I couldn't overlook.

QUALITY: Very Good

VALUE: Very Satisfied
An interesting mixture of the usual and unusual. Even the strange ones are nicely described and are not alien enough to make it difficult to intergrate with most fantasy settings.

DISLIKED: There are 3 blank pages. I can see their use in a book, but not a pdf.

QUALITY: Very Good

VALUE: Satisfied
The blank pages are for people who print and bind at, say, kinkos, to make things a bit easier on the poor saps that work there since I know a few. They rant. :)
