Disclaimer: I'm a bit of a Privateer Press fangirl. I was introduced to both Warmachine and Hordes when I was in a pretty poor position in life (military base in the middle of nowhere with literally nothing entertaining to do), and I've been in love with Privateer Press things ever since - the Bodger Games stuff (Infernal Contraption! <3), Warmachine, Hordes, and most importantly Iron Kingdoms.
The Iron Kingdoms RPG brings amazing things to the Tabletop RPG realm that I felt were... lacking, in other games. For starters, the mix of magical fantasy and Steampunk, while not wholly unique, was realised in a beautifully unique way. Steamjacks are an awesome idea, and the fact that you can create a character capable of wielding the might of these awesome machines just feels incredible. Beyond the setting, I love the mechanics of the Iron Kingdoms game - the core mechanic is simple, consistent and understandable, using the 2d6 system that powers Privateer Press's minis games. As a wargamer (who is especially fond of WarmaHordes), the combat system is especially interesting to me.
Unleashed takes all of that, mixes it up a bit and brings a whole new world of options to Iron Kingdoms. I've got the PDFs for this product, as well as the physical Adventure Kit box that includes these booklets. The quick-start rules for Unleashed do an amazing job at both of jobs; first, it provides a simplified version of the Iron Kingdoms ruleset that you need to know in order to be able to play the included adventure - this includes rules for the Will Weaver-type casters (of which the party has two) and the Harnesser-type caster, a new addition to the Iron Kingdoms rules that takes on the Warlock side (with Warcasters being Focusers in the currently-released rulebooks). Second, it does a brilliant job of whetting my appetite, and those of my players, for what is coming out later this month. A brief flash of how Warlocks will play out, a wonderful illustration of the types of characters you can create, and plenty of suggestions for living up to the savagery of the Wilds of Immoren.
I can't wait for April 22. The Wilds are coming... are you ready?
