A great little inexpensive resource. Although it can be used "as-is", It's true value is in pulling it apart and using the various bits and pieces as needed.

A great little set! I don't really plan on using the fowl's legs, but they are well done. The hut builds up nicely, as do all of FDG's offerings.

CAL1 Calidar, In Stranger Skies

Calidar is a beautifully produced book from both a content and a presentation standpoint. It is truly a unique and original book, which is a rarity among so many products that are really just recycled material. It is well worth the price of admission.

COA03: Guidebook to the City of Dolmvay (PDF)
Publisher: Small Niche Games
by Jim M. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 04/15/2014 02:17:08

The nuts and bolts of the Guidebook have been adequately covered by other reviews so I'll just cover what I like and dislike and why you should get it.

The book itself is similar to other SNG products in that it sits in the middle ground between amateurishly produced content and the overly slick output of the big boys. It has a very personal feel yet also has good production and presentation. The final product is easy to read and use in any form.

Every section has something of interest whether you plan to use it whole as part of the Amherth setting, plan to drop it into another world or even just use some of the parts.

The guidebook is large and contains a ton of material. The sewers alone could occupy a party for years! One of the best aspect of the books is the sheer number of NPCs to be found in the city. There are dozens and dozens of them and If you need more quickly the NPC generator will come in handy. Sometimes it seems people forget that RPG is ROLE PLAYING game and one meets too many cardboard cutouts. Not so in Dolmvay. Another unique feature is The Church. In my world there are lots of religions most of which are pretty informal and usually don't bather each other. Dolmvay, on the other hand, has a dominant religion that is not very tolerant of other faiths. This makes for a definite feel that is a distinguishing feature of the city. Think Medieval Catholic Church.

My only complaint is that I would have liked more maps. O.K. I admit that I'm a map nut, but I would have liked to see a map of the immediate area around the city and maybe a regional map. Those may be coming in a future SNG product.

So why should you get it? Because it's a ridiculously good deal. Where else can you get a 200+ page sourcebook for pay what you want? Through a strange twist of events I have the PDF, Softcover and Hardcover and can recommend any of the three. Just pick your price point.

Hi Jim! Yes, a regional map will be detailed in the upcoming Guidebook to the Duchy of Valnwall (which will also be funded through Kickstarter, hopefully!). I\'ll keep you posted. Thanks for taking the time to comment!

I don't have much to add to the other reviews other than I have been having a blast playing through Prologue, Interim and Finale. I definitely want to get the full adventures. I am enjoying the combination of choose-your-path with a unique, personal character. It makes my Old School heart happy!

Although I am not specifically an Arthurian RPG player, I found much to like and useful material in this issue. It's beautifully done and well written. The scenarios will be usable with a little modification and most of the other articles have a variety of information that I can mine.

I don't play Barebones RPG but was curious nonetheless. I was pleasantly surprised by what I found.

The cover is first rate and really drew me into the interior. I have a couple of blank pages so I don't know exactly what I missed but most of the articles offer something even for an old-schooler like myself. The most useful bits for me are the village map and the Hamlet of Gnawbone. I can always use a new village and don't always have time to create one. Keep up the good work.

An interesting way to play Lovecraftian horror using LL. However, if you are going to discard so much of LL to convert to a modern setting, why not just use Call of Cthulu or similar horror RPG? I expected this to simply introduce horror into the medieval fantasy setting of LL.

Old School Dungeons - Crypt of the Dread Lord
Publisher: Crypt Thing Press
by Jim M. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 04/15/2014 00:24:50

A ready to populate crypt. It's big enough to hold quite a lot of undead but small enough to be tackled in 1 or 2 sessions. Only one change: I plan to change several of the door to secret doors to slow the party down a little and frustrate them.

Not sure what makes it "somewhat generic". It's a perfect drop in, on the fly map.

Three Swordsmen
Publisher: Kortthalis Publishing
by Jim M. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 04/15/2014 00:15:27

Three options to give the generic, old school fighter a little spice. The added abilities are nice but the real treasure here is the nudge in the direction of greater character development. Using one of these options provides a base on which to build a more interesting character. That's always a good thing in ROLE playing games. The best part is the table on the last page. Again, helping to build a little character into an enchanted sword. Just remember to name it as well.
