Cargo Commodities 2
Publisher: Dark Quest Games
by Jose L. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 08/20/2006 00:00:00

Cargo Commodities 2 is exactly what its name implies. It is a list of 12 different cargos that can be injected into a d20 Sci-Fi game (although in reality, most of them are suitable for a fantasy game as well).

A chart near the beginning of the pdf describes:

 1. What quantity makes a "unit"
 2. Unit-price
 3. Precautions (flammable, perishable, etc.)
 4. Purchase DC
 5. Restrictions (either nothing or illegal)

There is also a description for each item, which provides some flavor for each cargo as well as any effects it might create upon use/consumption/etc. (although no game stats are provided).

LIKED: This provides both costs in credits and a purchase DC, making this suitable for many different systems. The cargos themselves are interesting and easily used in a campaign with trading elements.

Its a very good value, especially for the low price.

QUALITY: Very Good

VALUE: Satisfied
Modern Dispatch (#73): Sundown Cineplex
Publisher: 12 to Midnight
by Jose L. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 08/20/2006 00:00:00

This 7-page pdf details the Sundown Cineplex, situated in 12 to Midnight's modern-setting town of Pinebox, Texas. The Cineplex was the sight of a grisly orgy of murder during the screening of an occult movie (don't want to spoil the details). A new owner takes over and attempts to restore and reopen the Cineplex, but something goes wrong...

This pdf documents details about the theater and its new owner. It also has plot hooks, stats for the new "inhabitants" and everything else needed to run this as a single adventure or to add this as a permanent fixture in a modern campaign.

LIKED: Idea is very creative and well executed. 12 to Midnight's stuff is always great game material as well as a interesting read for horror fans.

DISLIKED: Not a big fan of the nod made to a certain occult figure (not Hitler, the other reference). Minor quibble in an otherwise good item.

QUALITY: Very Good

VALUE: Satisfied
TERRAFORMER 3 - Daxion Arms
Publisher: Blue Devil Games
by Jose L. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 08/20/2006 00:00:00

Daxion Arms is Blue Devil Games' third Terraformer supplement, which seeks to provide more material for their flagship setting, Dawning Star. Daxion Arms is a company that specializes in unique weaponry that its founder, Neil Pritchard, developed by using techniques he discovered by reverse-engineering alien artifacts on the planet of Eos.

This 14-page pdf details the history of Neil Pritchard and his mercenary relic-hunting group, the Freedom Band. It details how he came to found the company, and the steps he's taken to make it successful. Stats are provided for all of the major players in the company, and there is plenty of information on the new weapons that he has developed.

LIKED: The uniqueness of the weapons is a nice touch that gives Daxion Arms its own footprint in the large setting of Dawning Star. Its mostly an attractive pdf (see below) and you get a lot of material for a pretty low price. There are also very few errors.

DISLIKED: The largish font, coupled with the line-spacing and single-column layout make it look a tad bunched. A two-column layout with some boxes would help this product be more aesthetically pleasing.

QUALITY: Very Good

VALUE: Satisfied

[THIS REVIEW WAS EDITED]
Date Added: 08/20/2006 00:00:00

There are plenty of indepth reviews available for this product. I will keep mine short. There are almost 160 pages of material in this product relating to the topic of time travel. This product covers the mechanics of time travel, equipment, feats, spells, etc...basically everything you can think of for time travel is covered in some detail.

LIKED: Pleasing layout, covers the topic very thoroughly, some interesting mechanics and topics that can be used or disregarded to give every campaign a slightly different feel with regards to time travel.

DISLIKED: Some additional artwork in the creature area would be nice. Some spells seem a bit too weak or powerful for their levels.

QUALITY: Very Good

VALUE: Satisfied
Publisher: RPG Objects
by Jose L.
Date Added: 08/20/2006 00:00:00

The description provided on the product page is very complete in describing what this pdf contains. Each character has stats, history, tactics, encounter hooks, and sometimes a little extra, depending on the particular NPC. These products are great for dropping into a campaign in order to give flavor to otherwise mundane encounters. These NPCs could make great friends and resources for the character, or be their worst enemy.

LIKED: No errors that I saw, high production quality, nice variety of NPCs.

DISLIKED: There should be a picture of each NPC (there are only 5). I personally also feel that there should have been more NPCs with lower CRs. 14 of 23 NPCs are CR 10 or higher, and the average CR is about 12.

QUALITY: Acceptable

VALUE: Satisfied
Traveller - The New Era 1248 Sourcebook 1 - Out Of The Darkness
Publisher: Avalon Game Company
by Jose L. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 08/20/2006 00:00:00

Read either Phillip McGregor's or Malcolm MacDonald's review if you're looking for indepth coverage of this product. This product covers the TNE era of Traveller into the year 1248. It answers a lot of the burning questions that the TNE setting posed, and sets the stage for adventures in Chartered Space.

LIKED: The T20 Traveller's Handbook is a good rulebook, but it does a lousy job of giving you setting information. Thus, this sourcebook is invaluable if you are new to the Traveller setting and what to get a feel of what the Traveller universe entails. Its not the only setting, but its very well written and very fun to read.

QUALITY: Excellent

VALUE: Very Satisfied
Buck-A-Batch: Modern Magic Items III
Publisher: Creation's Edge Games
by Jose L. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 08/13/2006 00:00:00

This product is exactly what its title implies. This is a 16-page pdf with around twenty mordern magic items. Some of them have many different subtypes (an item might have 6 subtypes, one for each stat). The type, caster level, purchase DC and weight are given for each item as well.

LIKED: The magic items are very creative in their design and none seem really overpowered. The purchase DC for most items also seems reasonable. These are great items if you're looking for something interesting to give to players (or use against them, in some cases).

This product is a great value at only $1.00.

QUALITY: Very Good

VALUE: Very Satisfied
TERRAFORMER 2 - Bone Orchard Encounter
Publisher: Blue Devil Games
by Jose L. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 08/13/2006 00:00:00

The Terraformer line of products basically provides more material for the Dawning Star campaign setting.

Bone Orchard Encounter, second product in the Terraformer series, brings a Dawn of the Dead feel to Dawning Star. This is an adventure set in the city of Red Hill. The characters will have to deal with the walking dead, brought back to "life" by rogue nanites.

The important locations and characters of Red Hill are fully described. This product also includes some new equipment, a new creature (nanite zombie, of course), and a new disease. There is also some quick info on how to best integrate this into Dawning Star (in or out of Red Hil) and in another science-fiction campaign settings.

LIKED: Very creative, well-executed concept. This of course works best in the Dawning Star campaign setting, it can really be run in any system with a high enough progress level (nanites).

QUALITY: Very Good

VALUE: Very Satisfied

[THIS REVIEW WAS EDITED]
Legends of Sorcery: Gems
Publisher: RPG Objects
by Jose L. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 08/03/2006 00:00:00

This is RPGObjects' great follow-up supplement to "Legends of Sorcery" that makes gems more than just treasure. "Legends of Sorcery: Gems" introduces two new classes: the Jeweler, who excels in improving gems and embedding them in wands, armor, weapons, etc, and the Geomancer, who draws his power from the earth and becomes mightier when using gems as a focus. There are also a couple of new skills and 5 new spells.

The last section is the most interesting, because it describes rules for the various properties of gems (quality, cut and size). It also describes twenty different gems and the magical effects that can be achieved by embedding them in various objects or using them in spellcasting.

LIKED: This is a great product that can add flavor to any campaign. Its perfect for use on a single region or kingdom your campaign world, to really give that area uniqueness and life. It also, obviously, integrates well with the mechanics introduced in Legends of Sorcery.

The production quality and editing are also very good, which is typical of RPGObjects material.

DISLIKED: It could have been longer, considering the interesting topic. Only two classes and two skills is a little meager. More ways to utilize gems, and a better variety of spells could be helpful as well.

Of course, additional supplements are hopefully forthcoming.

QUALITY: Very Good

VALUE: Very Satisfied
Dawning Star: Helios Rising
Publisher: Blue Devil Games
by Jose L. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 07/26/2006 00:00:00

"Dawning Star: Helios Rising" is a massive follow-up to Blue Devil Games' fantastic "Dawning Star: Operation Quick Launch" sourcebook, which debuted early last year. "Operation Quick Launch" was an introduction to the Dawning Star campaign setting, which was deliberately designed to take full advantage of d20 Modern and d20 Future. It also introduced the planet of Eos, which is a wholly realized campaign world in its own right. "Helios Rising" tremendously expands the Dawning Star campaign setting by fully detailing the REST of the Helios System.

This product is massive...540 pages long, with an uncompressed pdf size of 55.2 megabytes. Inside are 13 chapters, with chapter one housing the introduction and the following chapters cataloging either a planet or some other feature of the Helios System. Here is the chapter list, with a brief description of each:

 1. Introduction - "How to Use This Book", history and setting info, campaign models, travel times between the planets, interplanetary trade rules, etc.

 2. Markus Asteroid Belt - Irregularly spaced clumps of asteroids, burnt smooth by their proximity to Helios and with mysteries lurking beneath their surfaces.

 3. Hephaestus - A hot, unhospitable planet that once held a massive prison inside its hollow body. Now, it is a pitch-black warzone.

 4. Verdant - A bright planet with a deadly, corrosive atmosphere. Empty space stations circle the planet in high orbit, housing forgotten dangers.

 5. C'thalk - A wild, jungle world inhabited by the fungal haimedians and the Empire of the reptilian Saurians, who command massive armies and fleets of starships, ready for conquest.

 6. The Moons of Eos - Phaeton and Selene. One covered in a mysterious and potentially devastating black dust, and the other a terraformed world that will reveal much about the "advanced" Tentaari race.

 7. Thres - A planet that was first terraformed and then used as an "incubator" for lifeforms transplanted from a dying world. Now over 5 races live on the planet, and war seems inevitable.

 8. Hesperos - A storm-ridden gas giant many moons and space stations. Here lie the mechites, nearly AI androids who look for materials to rebuild Computer One, a massive computer housed within an asteroid in deep space.

 9. Poseidon - The surface of this water world is covered in miles-deep ice. Its only inhabitants are the Ice Miner Robots, who were trapped on Poseidon long ago and now seek revenge on anyone they find.

 10. Apollo - Another gas giant. The strange, tubular space stations orbiting this planet hold a strange group who could spell disaster for many in the Helios system.

 11. Altas - The last planet in the Helios system, it housed the Star Confederation's massive galaxy-spanning gene seeding projects. It is now under control of the vaasi, who will use it for destruction.

 12. Chronus Belt - A dense asteroid belt that houses the remains of the vaasi empire as they prepare to wipe out the races of the Helios system, thus ensuring the destruction of the last vestiges of the Star Confederation.

 13. Gateway Station - Massive portals that allowed for faster-than-light travel by the Star Confederation, it is the only hope for reaching other systems.

Each of the chapters above has a wealth of information, such as: history, geography, climate, atmosphere, conditions, factions and federations, locations of interest, relations with other worlds, adventure ideas, species info (PC and NPC), NPCs and xenomorphs. Also dispersed throughout are new talent trees, occupations, skills, feats, species classes, advanced classes, prestige classes, psionics, equipment, weapons, armor, poisons, computers, cybernetics, genetic engineering, relics, vehicles, mecha, and starships. There are also interesting campaign ideas, like the Red Truth, the Great Sky Ark, the Star Harvester, the Star Confederation, its war with the Vaasi Empire, and a lot more. Finally, thereis an appendix with some planetary surface maps, a 7-page index, and the obligatory OGL stuff.

The various races and factions are fleshed out, and the interactions between each are thoroughly explained. The Star Confederation (and its connection to humans and the other races), the vaasi, the tentaari, and many other ideas in the Dawning Star campaign setting are explained in great detail as well. Basically this covers absolutely everything you need to know about the Helios system, expands upon the campaign information that was originally presented in "Operation Quick Launch", and adds a ton of extra flavor, adventure locales and opportunities for great roleplay.

LIKED: This product has got extremely high production values. From the great cover to the beautiful layout to the excellent writing and artwork, its obvious that this was a labor of love. Great care was taken in creating a sourcebook that can serve as a tool to support any number of campaign models. Blue Devil Games has been supporting this campaign setting with regular product releases, but this one ups the ante considerably with its amazingly high quality. The content is also well balanced, with nothing being grossly overpowered or overwhelming to the rest of the setting. Most importantly, its a blast to read, either as a game product or science fiction sourcebook.

With everything contained in this product, there is bound to be something interesting for everyone. I cannot recommend it enough.

DISLIKED: The price at first seemed a bit high, but once I considered that most other publishers would have probably split this content into 15-20 separate pdfs, each costing $2.00 to $3.00 or more, it suddenly felt like a darn good value.

I did, however, experience lower back spasms after hauling it out of my printer. It broke the axle on muh truck, too.

Seriously, there is really nothing to dislike here. I'd wager that "Helios Rising" will rise to be an award-winning product.

QUALITY: Excellent

VALUE: Very Satisfied

[THIS REVIEW WAS EDITED]
Perspectives Pro is a very interesting addon for Campaign Cartographer. It allows you to make 3D maps of dungeons, caves, buildings, and similar locales. The maps have an isometric look and feel, which works great. There are TONS of 3D objects you can add to your map, such as columns, furniture, pits, etc. With a bit of work, you can even make 3D maps of towns and cities. Its a great piece of sofware if you use Dungeon Designer or City Designer.

LIKED: Easy to use...you can make great looking 3D isometric maps quickly. You can even render your 2D maps into 3D with a few easy steps.

DISLIKED: Not really a dislike about the product, but Profantasy needs more examples of Perspectives Pro maps on their web site. This adventure is put together very well and it is very entertaining. The authors are obviously very proficient with the Fantasy Grounds software. There are crosslinks within the entire module that take you to exactly what you need when you need it. I'd dare to say the excellent layout of this module almost makes this easier to run in Fantasy Grounds that with pen and paper!

The module itself is well balanced and gives the players quite a challenge. It's a three-part adventure, and it's split such that each part will take an evening to complete. Good value, definitely. All in all, this is a good buy, especially if you're new to FG and want to see how to do it right.
