Strike Legion Tactical Rules Compendium
Publisher: Legionnaire Games
by Paul C. [Verified Purchaser]

No games with it yet but it looks like a very nice update (version 1.5 as they call it) to the Strike Legion series. Everything is here except the campaign system (coming later). At 181 pages (including 30 pages of pre-done data cards) it is a very thorough set of rules. We've played mostly in 15mm with no problem and any sci-fi gamer will want to give SL a look. Don't be put off by the size, the basics of the game are simple and you can layer on more as you go.

It was great to see SL get this treatment.

TNE-0313 Striker 2 Traveller Miniatures Rules
Publisher: Far Future Enterprises - Traveller
by Paul C. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 07/29/2011 12:47:14

Striker 2 is a classic battalion level game where each stand is a platoon. This makes it ideal for simulating larger conflicts where combined arms really matter. Infantry, armor, artillery, environments, electronic warfare and especially command and control are all covered. The game is excellent for a campaign and also include four detailed scenarios with force lists. The game can be played with 6mm-15mm miniatures or even as a board game with counters and a map.

It is based on the Command Decision rules (ver 2.0 I think) from 20 years ago or so. Command Decision itself is now at version 4.0 and called Test of Battle. Being an older game Striker 2 is considerably more detailed than today's more streamlined titles. But if you like the detail and the scale the CD system is still an excellent set of rules and once you get a few games under your belt they play fairly quickly. But three hour games are the norm.

Perhaps the more annoying thing is because Striker 2 is set in the Traveller universe it sticks to having real stats for everything so you are constantly dealing with real ranges and millimeters of armor. Again this is nice from a detail perspective but somewhat annoying from a game flow perspective.

Striker 2 includes a few dozen vehicle profiles but, again, being a Traveller title it assumes you are bringing units over from your regular Traveller games and thus only provides rules for converting units for Striker 2. You will need other Traveller rules for unit design. But even without this it is easy to make up your own you just won't be gauranteed balance without some play.

The PDF you get is a scan of the original and is well reproduced. The original was all black and white and so is this but there is some excellent art included.

The best modern successor to Striker 2 is probably Strike Legion Planetray Ops or Future War Commander. SLPO is more streamlined and more comprehensive but if you like platoon level battles Striker 2 is still worth a look especially if you play Traveller.

Strike Legion Main Rulebook
Publisher: Legionnaire Games
by Paul C. [Verified Purchaser]

Strike Legion is an excellent set of Sci-fi tactical combat rules. The scale is one stand equals a team and individual vehicles. It is designed for 6mm minis but easily scaled to 15mm. The game is reasonably streamlined but includes a huge array of options so players can choose the level of detail they desire as well as match the rules to their preferred Sci-fi genre. Everything from infantry to air support and artillery is covered. if you add in the other supplements there is no area of Sci-fi combat the rules do not cover. Physical presentation is very good as well.

If you have any interest in Sci-fi tactical combat Stirke Legion is a must buy. It also complements the excellent new Gruntz rules as well by offering a somewhat larger scope and more comprehensive coverage.

Gruntz 15mm SCI-FI
Publisher: Rottenlead Publishing
by Paul C. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 07/15/2011 16:25:36

Haven't played a game yet but after a few read-throughs of the rules Gruntz looks quite good. If you are looking for a skirmish level game it strikes a nice balance of detail and playability with emphasis on playability. It is adaptable to almost any setting and unit sheets are provided for some of the more popular 15mm figures.

The 'soak' concept is an elegant way to handle things such as shields and EM that are often missing in sci-fi rules or added with cumbersome mechanics.

In my case I was looking for a squad level game not skirmish but I think Gruntz will work just fine here as well. An infantry unit of 6 guys can simply become a platoon of 6 sections with almost no modification to the rules.

Starmada: Dreadnoughts
Publisher: Majestic Twelve Games
by Paul C. [Verified Purchaser]

I was pleasantly surprised with this supplement. It is very well done and anyone familiar with the Starmada system will of course have very little new to learn. A nice selection of ship stats are provided (mostly British and German but the other main actors are included as well). It compares well with Mongoose's Victory at Sea system and if you already play Starmada and are interested in WW1 naval warfare it is a must get. If you are a historical gamer un-familiar with the basic sci-fi Starmada system do not worry, the system translates very well to this period. The book is 88-pages and includes the rules for WW1 naval warfare, ship construction options, ship sheets, and six scenarios.

World at War: German Vehicle Compendium
Publisher: A.D.Publishing
by Paul C. [Verified Purchaser]

Well the German Vehicle Compendium is exactly what it says. It is 66 pages of vehicle stats for tanks, AFVs, SP guns, transports, and more. The selection is very good and there are numerous colored photos of well painted miniatures sprinkled throughout. If you play Germans (or against them) in WaW you will want to pick this guide up.

Tread-Head: Armored Combat in WW2
Publisher: Trajectory Press
by Paul C. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 12/05/2008 17:26:57

Tread Head is a nice expansion to the World at War rules. Unfortunately, the description of the product makes it sound like you will get a set of detailed armor rules with this product. This is NOT the case. The new rules basically consist of two damage charts, one for tracked and one for wheeled vehicles, and that is about it. But it does provide a very nice selection of US and German armor units and vehicle stats along with some tweaked weapon stats. This is the meat of the product and, along with the one scenario, makes it a nice package for the price.
