Dragonbane Core Set

This game just looks incredible and feels it too. It is rather incomplete though. There are just 16 monsters despite dozens of punters pleading for more on the Kick starter. There's no Ring mail, There's no Scale mail, There are almost no pole arms. Necromancers are having a difficult time, as there are no Zombies. The nick names for characters almost all come from modern English. There aren't quite enough spells. There are no rules for castles nor manor up keep rules. There are no maratime rules. It reminds me, (although it is BRP), of BECMI's first two booklets. Basic and Expert, (simplified from BX) in detail. There are no tresure tables in the rules booklet. They're just on playing cards. Relavent tables aren't repeated at the end of the book for ease of reference. There are rumours of future supplements but I didn't pay for those. I paid for this one!

Heroes of the Pulp Age - A Perilous Roleplaying Epic

This is a well presented game. The art work is rich and clear and gives an experience of almost overflowing throughout the book. Most of the art consists of old photographs and drawings such as adverts and announcements from the era itself and this creates a sense of immersion in the material when reading it.

The 2D10 rules system is unified and homogenous. However I wouldn’t describe the game as rules light There is easily enough to call it moderately heavy. Combat is quite deadly and a nice twist is in being able to injury and disable adversaries if they fail resistance rolls when injured. The rules promote heroic action and the excitement of adventure in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Skills are resolved in the same way as combat rolling by having to 20 or more on 2D10 + modifiers, which are the characters skill score + any situational modifiers.

The sample adventure runs well and all of the relevant tables are reproduced at the back of the book for ease of reference. So get in your Sopwith Camel, fly over dense jungle and find lost temple ruins, filled with mad cultists, poisonous snakes and gleaming treasure. It’s all here. Heroes of the Pulp Age is a Very very good game.

Ruin Masters - Classic Fantasy Play - RPG
Publisher: CMON
by Richard T. H. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 09/24/2021 14:44:18

Ruin masters is a D100 old style high fantasy RPG. It is an unusual mixture of BRP and D100lite. It only uses 10 sided dice, damage uses exploding dice and Armour absorbs damage. There are only four attributes and six skills. I have only played it a couple of times but get the feeling that if you are silly that the character could get killed. I rather like that. A lot of rules are about hex crawling and dungeoneering. There is only a limited amount of magic and although a large amount of fantasy creatures exist in stat form only on some reference tables the actual described part of the bestiary is quite limited. We are told however that a bestiary is coming out.

There have been a couple of comments about text errors by a few purchasers relating to English not being the authors first language but these are only minor quibbles and I can assure you that their English is very good indeed. The final production looks sumptuous yet there are a number of minor syntax errors in the book which could have been easily corrected. Perhaps a further updated version will do just that.

If you like high fantasy and haven’t found your system, then this could be just what you are looking for. I you have found the system you want, this game might offer a fun alternative. Ruin Masters has a direct kill the monsters and take their stuff feel about it, but with little effort will do so much more.

Galaxy Prime - A Scifi Roleplaying Epic
Publisher: Epic Age Media
by Richard T. H. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 04/17/2020 05:51:57

Galaxy Prime is a simple yet well written Sci Fi. It has a plethora of races to choose from. Character generation is a point allocation system although a dice roll alternative is offered. It only uses three attributes, which keeps the characters easy to calculate, however a large number of derived secondary characteristics allow the characters a sense of depth.

Combat is a simple percentile system while skill calculation uses attributes added together or multiplied a number of times and sometimes with a bonus added. These in turn increase by spending charisma points, which work like development points and are accumulated through play.

Overall it’s a good game. It plays well. The book is well presented and an easy read. It does however have a couple of quirks such as a couple of pictures are missing from the creature listing and occasionally some of the information tables could do with a more explanation. But these are minor quibbles to a solid system. 4 Stars

This is a very good product. The art is clear, the descriptions really bring you into the setting, it's a relatively easy read and really expands the S&S game. It seems the Starships and Spacemen RPG has been waiting ages for a supplement just like this and now it has one. Well done Paul Kidd

I really liked this idea. You read the comic and then play it out. It's a very simple, easy preparation way for CMs to get an adventure going. I hope they publish some more of theses for Crytpworld.

Magic World
Publisher: Chaosium
by Richard T. H. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 07/04/2015 07:59:11

Magic world is a simple D100 fantasy RPG. It uses Chaosium’s BRP system and is quite similar to the call of Cuthulhu game. I’ve found combat relatively quick in comparison to other RPGs. Instead of grinding away a few hit points per strike, combat feels fast and fluid. The character’s attributes effect their skill chances of success and the skill list is comprehensive. Magic is plentiful and powerful and the bestiary extensive.

All of this sounds good but we can say this about most games. What I like about MW is the way you can keep most of the rules in your head. There isn’t the need to spend hours looking up some obscure rule. Now this isn’t because Magic World is overly rules light. It’s because the rule system is homogenous. Once you grasp one concept most of the others just fall into place. Secondly there aren’t endless lists of feats, cults and combat styles to learn. Tell the referee what your dong and they’ll calculate in a few seconds the modification and or Effects.

Yes this is a fantasy game but we do want so cohesiveness within the frame work and it’s a relief for me that there aren’t any 98HP fighters going around or abstract game mechanics that have to be computed before the fun begins. This is because although MW is new, it’s actually old. It has grown out of other Chaosuim games from Elric to historical RQ and has been refined and play tested through decades of RPG evolution via these other systems.

It’s the game I play the most. It’s the one I introduce other new gamers to RPG with. It’s my go to fantasy RPG. The system is smooth and works really well and it's never let me down. I think it’s probably the best Fantasy RPG system in the market today.

Cryptworld
Publisher: Goblinoid Games
by Richard T. H. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 05/28/2015 16:12:55

CryptWorld is really the spiritual 2nd edition to the pacesetter game called “Chill adventures into unknown”. This 96 ‘page book is surprisingly comprehensive and complete, with 29 or so monsters and 15 animals, a dozen paranormal talents for player characters, clear rules for fear, information for car/vehicle chases and a fairly comprehensive skill list. My overall impression is that the rules are a little tighter than in the original making it a smother for a CM, (referee). For example I particularly like the simple range modifier rules for weapons.

In a slight change of style, some skills like Art criticism, hypnotism and psychiatry are missing from the skill list making the overall feel a bit less gothic and a bit more modern slasher movie. These skills however would be easy to add back in. The almost complete lack of historical material and equipment such as mentioning popular songs, films, events and relevant inventions and prices from a particular time period means that the game rather has to be focused in the here and now, which is fine but there’s nothing like a good 1800’s 1920s gothic horror in my opinion.

CryptWorld maintains the same action table and simple percentage system that made the original popular.

The 100% compatibility with Rot world RPG and in particular Majus RPG, (both of which are also from Goblinoid games) actually means that there is already quite a bit of new to CryptWorld supplementary material out there, which can be easily shoed in to any CW campaign.

This is an excellent game and well worth the purchase price for both the PDF and dead tree formats.
