I've read this book twice and this is one of the games I just WANT to play. Really, go searching for an available GM to play with. Let me give you an advice though: if you are not an indie/new wave player play this game with an experienced GM the first time, not because this is somehow difficult, but because your worst nightmare is to fall into the old traditional habits. it's ten times more fun if you let go and enjoy the FATE Core for what it is: an indie game disguised.

This system is perfect for any rules-lite GMs out there. There are only a handful of rules, yet they work together to cover anything that could come up in a game. It's also the perfect system for a collaborative play style: the GM and the players build the world and plot together alongside the players' characters, and each player is linked to each other (no more "I'm a mysterious loner" characters ruining party cohesion here). Furthermore, the 'examples of play' really make me want to play the campaign they're playing. Last, but certainly not least, is that the book is packed full of excellent GMing advice: don't call for a roll unless both success and failure are interesting; always make sure there's a way forward after failure (no "you fail to pick the door's lock", "well I guess I'll roll again until we get through"); and many more. For this price point, I would recommend even people with no intention of running the system to buy this, just for the GM advice.

A very interesting system. I've only played 4th ed D&D but my DM uses a lot of custom elements to make his players special. For the campaign after the one we are in finishes, I am going to be a co-DM for the game, so I'm researching other systems, and there is a lot in here that looks like it fits with his style.

The book is well written and I like all the examples. My only niggle about it is that it's not a hard copy - I like to be able to flick back and forth between sections to understand things, but my e-reader is a first generation, and can't handle that very well.

Fate Core is a stream-lined version of the Fate mechanics. The selling points for this book are three fold: 1) Fate Core makes playing Fate rules much simpler without sacrificing game satisfaction, 2) The artistic layout of this book is excellent: easy to read, yet charming, organized, and inspiring. The artwork is appropriate and fun to look at, and 3) you are given permission to create a hard-copy of the PDF book for your own private use. This is a HUGE bonus, making this purchase well-worth the money you may spend for purchasing the product. These three facets have renewed my interest in creating games for Fate game mechanics.

  • I highly recommend paying for this particular book, for your RPG collection: as an RPG enthusiast, if you are like me, you will want people like those that work at Evil Hat Productions to publish more material like Fate Core, but they can't do that if no-one supports the products they can make with fairness and by balancing their work with a fair payment for their publication.
