This is a wonder, fun module that is great of introducing new players to the game and to roleplaying. The premise is simple.

You are child. You have best friend who is a monster. He travels around with you. People usually don't see him. You and your class flying in a plane on a fieldtrip. The plane secretly is planing on eating the children. What do you do?

It's a straight foward problem that must be met head on and cannot be wiggled out of. As the characters are children or monsters, their decision making process can be ridicioulous and conveluted, which is perfect for new time players.

This is a fun little hack and slash game. It is very rules lite which means the emphasis is on quick, fun combats. It is not a game for the epic saga (at least I don't think it is). Its for an evening of kicking back with laughs and not having to worry about needed 4 different books to run a session. I also think it's a great system to introduce people new RPGs because its very simple menchanics and you the GM are free to create a plethora of NPCs to entertain and draw them in.

Monster of the Week

Why should you pick this game up?

  • It is a game built on the Apocolpyse World Engine. Roll 2D6 plus your stat. On 6 or less something bad happens and plot moves forward. 7-9 Something good and bad happens. 10+ Tell the GM just how great things went.
  • In this game if you fail a roll, you get a point of xp. Yep. Even if something goes horribly wrong because of your failed roll, there is still a silver lining to that cloud. It encourages players to try approaches to situtaitons that don't rely on clinging desperately to one's most powerful stat.
  • This game lets you step into the Dresden Files, Buffy, Supernatural, Mercy Thompson, the X-Files, The Nightside and a myriad other worlds of Urban Fantasy, Weird West and Weird Science. You can quickly build a fun quirky one-shot or craft 4 or 5 episode arc worthy of Netflix.
  • The classes (or playbooks) really capture the archetypes of Urban Fantasy and are quite rich. They cover everythign from quirky funny moves to creating ancient cults to designing uber monster dicing weapons.

Trail of Cthulhu

Trail of Cthulhu is a fun and easy system for investigative and thriller games. One of the biggest weaknesses (at least in my opinion) with Call of Cthulhu is there is the potential of missing 1 single clue and being unable to advance at all in the scenario.

Trail fixes that problem by saying you will always get just barely enough to advance the plot along and your rolls and point spends are to develop a broader picture of what is going on.

I love this game. It's very simple and allows for an insane amount of creativity. It a fusation of board game and rpg, not quite one and not quite the other. I have run this at three conventions as well as for friends and significant others of gaming friends who are not 'into' games and they all had a blast. While people mind find it daunting Rp'ing Grignar the Mage of the Three Spheres of Dawn, its a lot less stressful saying "Uh..the new scarcity is...hammers." and then draw a small hammer with an X through it or deciding that the new danger to the community is "Um...giant..crawfish..are..in the river and attacking our sheep!" and then draw a big old crawfish on the map. There are no numbers or columns and tons of dice to confuse or fret over. The act of drawing and watching things grow and change really draws everyone one.

The game recommends using a piece of printer paper or loose leaf paper, which works fine, for the map. I personally use one of those large wet erase roll up battle maps and a 8-pack of colored markers for all the drawing. It really gets people to be creative with the drawing. At every con most of the players end up taking pictures of the maps.

This is a game for any age bracket and player level. I've had hardcore grognards, 10 year olds and 40 year old mother who have never played an RPG in her life and each one loved it.

Buy this game. It's totally worth it.

Bryson Springs
Publisher: Hebanon Games

As someone who is always running one-off modules for his tabletop group, Hebanon's systemless style is great. This module has a story that's simple to familiarize yourself with and then unleash on your players.

It is true it has no stats for npcs and monsters but let's be honest, how often do we not flip open a core book and use a stock npc and mental flip a stat or a skill? The only real number crunching you need to do is on the monsters. But these monsters are so far outside the normal ghoul/Dark One/Cthonian that players aren't going to notice if they seem a little wonky mathematically.

I own the books for CoC, nWoD, and Trail of Cthulhu, all of which work great with the Hebanon modules. And if you're not sure if it's worth 2 or 3 dollars? Listen to a playtest of the scenario.

It's why I bought the scenario.

Hunter: The Vigil Quickstart (The Hunt)

Hunter the Vigil Quickstart is a great way for you, your GM, or your players to dip toes into the nWoD. The primary reason I like it is, while I can come with action scenes and crazy skill check encounters I always struggle with the investigation and social aspect of games. This quickstarter a wonderful teaching guild on how a well rounded game looks in the Storyteller system.
