Werewolf: the Forsaken 2nd Edition

A massive improvement on a line that always had promise but never quite delivered. The updated rules are excellent, nuanced and carefully considered for their impact and place in the themes and moods of the game. It really feels like werewolves are scary monsters again, whilst retaining the interesting animist themes of the first edition.

The only thing that lets it down are some unclear descriptions in a few places (the gift system in particular, though interesting and very cool, is tricky to get your head around without careful picking over the rules) and a clear lack of space. The book could easily have been half as long again, and would have been all the better for it.

All in all extremely good, but not quite perfect.

Just a short review to add my voice to the others recommending this game.

Despite a very "indie" feel (black and white art, unremarkable formatting, etc) this is a brilliant book, dripping with thematic pleasures, and evocative of a mood that other games have often attempted to capture, and fail.

The rules are simple, but mechanically pleasing, and the setting and cosmology is just breathtaking. Even if you don't like one of the worlds suggested, it's very easy to swap it out for one of your own creation, and the themes are laid bare enough that it's easy to keep everything in line, without being intrusive.

There are some stunning narrative touches which make the game a joy - the obsession with the number 13, the broken clock motif, and the five stages of grief to name just a few.

It's truly an excellent game - bought on an impulse and well worth it. Would highly recommend.

Blood Sorcery: Sacraments & Blasphemies

A very high-quality offering that really adds hugely to Lancea and Crone games, with excellent design values throughout. A flexible, but flavourful system for ritual magic, the excellent but terrifying threnodies, and some truly great antagonists make for a well-rounded volume.

However, I do feel it is a little short, even for its low cost. Another few pages of example rituals, and some rules for mystical objects and artefacts would really have given this the shine it deserves. As such, it is a great book, but not a truly fantastic one.
