The Petal Hack 2nd Ed.
by Martin K. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 06/19/2023 10:27:29

Someone much more eloquent than me posted this on Reddit (https://www.reddit.com/r/osr/comments/v5t03v/what_are_the_best_settings_distillations_into_the/), and I think it nicely summarizes my thoughts:

A Black Hack supplement that does the impossible. It distills the core of the extensive Tekumel setting down to its pure, beating heart. Instead of wrangling hundreds of pages of lore and grokking a unique but dated ruleset, you can pull out this slim puppy and be running one of the most interesting worlds from the earliest days of the hobby in no time. It elegantly presents the setting in a dense, economic fashion, and leverages The Black Hack to keep rules out of your way. It is a gateway to Tekumel that cuts straight to the good stuff, and lets you approach the dozens of other sources of Tekumel lore at your own pace after you've started playing. Brilliant!

Warriors of the Lost Planet
by Eric F. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 09/18/2019 17:42:54

Basically I was looking around for new Warriors of the Red Planet resources. I stumbled into Brett Slocum's Warriors of the Red Planet Tekumel campaign resource book Warriors of the Lost Planet. What is Warriors of the Lost Planet? Well its an OSR Sword and Planet rules Warriors of the Red Planet to play on Tekumel during The Later Times, the period within a few thousand years of The Time of Darkness..

Warriors of the Lost Planet clocks in at thirty two pages of Tekumel planet sword & sorcery style adventure. Those players of the Empire of the Petal Throne rpg will see all of the familiar races & aliens in attendence. The engine here is definitively Warriors of the Red Planet. So we've got a solid engine here that brings in the "Sword and Planet" genre which is wonderfully brought to life though simple but effective rules for character races, classes and equipment! All of this is done with a Tekumel flurish! But is this done effectively?

Well yes but your gonna need Warriors of the Red Planet becaus these are Brett Slocum's Warriors of the Red Planet Rpg Tekumel campaign resource book from the ground up. He's got all of the familiar races, notes on playing them, the technologies of the Tekumel & their Warriors equvilant. The whole cloth series of events surrounding the 'The Later Times'. And more which is not too bad considering that this whole book is free. Can you run a campaign in the latter times using this book? In a really short answer, yes. The material here is well done & we'll get into the ins & outs of using Warriors of the Lost Planet. Warriors of the Lost Planet is a resource & campaign book, this book takes you by the hand adding the races, events, etc. all within the confines of thirty two pages. It does it very well highlighting the material without talking down to its audience. This book takes the complexities of Tekumel campaign & makes it accessible to the average gamer & dungeon master. Could a Tekumel campaign be run using Warriors of the Lost Planet & say original Dungeons & Dragons?

Yes but the dungeon master might need acess to The Tekumel Sourcebook which not only provides the dungeon master the back bone of the setting but lots more history, resources, & Tekumel goodness to run a complete campaign.

Warriors of the Lost Planet does a nice job at the The Later Times, the period within a few thousand years of The Time of Darkness while leaving the dungeon master plenty of room to customize & play with their own Tekumel setting. Five outt a five in my book for a free book. Eric Fabiaschi Swords & Stitchery Blog Want Reviews & Support for this & other OSR products? The Petal Hack

I just cannot imagine anyone who would feel comfortable in this setting. Combine that with how it reinforces the idea of an oppressive caste system, and I'm out.

The best Hack supplement I have read. Excellent introduction to the classic Empire of the Petal Throne setting. The classes, magic system and other rules are elegant and clearly laid out. Highly recommended.

The Hack system is generally good, especially for those who lack the time for a fully involved RPG campaign. I was pleased to see "Petal Hack", as "Empire of the Petal Throne" is a sentimental favorite for those who remember gaming in the 70's.

This may be the clearest introduction to the world of Tekumel Ever. There is certainly more you can know, but this will give you a good start and the Black Hack system is filled with Old School goodness.

not quite as I remember the original, but it was 40 or so years ago. I can't remember it bring as sexually permissive, though the game system does seem improved.

Enchanter Class for Labyrinth Lord and OSR
by Derek H. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 10/06/2015 10:19:11

There are three ways that a shaman class (one who can speak to spirits) can be constructed- the spirits are innate to all things, spirits are fairly common and wander about or having spirit familiars on hand at all times. The Enchanter is a combination of the latter two. Initially the enchanter will have to hope that a spirit is nearby and at 5th level one can be bound, though that isn't automatic or easy. There are no unique spells for the class, or actually the spirit world, but that is easy to rectify with all the OSR and AD&D/BD&D resources out there. The rules for finding out what spirits are around, if any, and what element and level they are are fairly simple and easy to use or modify as needed.

I am giving it a 4 because it isn't the best thing since sliced bread, but it is a well written and can be easily modified to fit many different styles of caster and play. Thumbs up.

A little gem; clear, concise and well-written with examples, open to interpretation to adapt it to your GM style but still with enough of a framework to grasp how the class works. A great variant on the standard Wizard.

Enchanter Class for Labyrinth Lord and OSR Games – Review by Kurt R

This is the first product by Brett Slocum and his newly created Welsh Bard Games and is offered as PWYW with a suggested price of $1.00; with additional commentary by James Spahn and Ian Borchardt

The first 2 pages are the cover and OGL and pages 3 through 6 are the content. The illustrations are great and very classical. The Enchanter class is a Spirit talker of sorts and I can see it being useful in many types of games, it is well thought out and includes example play in the last page and a half.

The special Class ability is Sense and Command Spirits and this is well written and easy to understand. The reaction roll determines the Spirit's willingness to help the Enchanter by casting spells for them. The Experience table is the same progression as a LL Magic-User and I think an Enchanter would be about on par with a MU of the same level.

One thing that stands out is the optional rules for quickly determining the Spirits element and level, using a standard playing card deck or a Tarot deck. Each suit is one of the elements and the face cards help determine the level of the Spirit.

I rate this 5 stars and recommend it to you without reservations.
