Lethal Lexicon: A Collection of Monsters for the Fifth Edition of the World's Greatest Roleplaying Game
by Christopher S. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 04/16/2019 02:18:44

I think some of the idea's for the monsters in this book aren't bad, and there is a good chunk of monsters in here.

However I feel that aspects of this need to be highlighted:

  • The page background makes it very difficult to read.
  • The cover art does Not reflect the art in the book. While most monsters do have a picture each, most of them are pencil sketches.
  • To highlight the lethatlity of the monsters in this book is somewhat misleading. Some monsters do have lethal abilities, however only 6 monsters in the book are a CR higher than 10.
  • Some of the formating of the monster abilities and actions can cause some confusion. For example some monsters have "legendary abilities" which seem to just be powerful abilities.

I think there are some monsters in here that have some cool ideas behind them, some of which are monsters that are clearly based on creatures in pop culture such as creatures from Dr. Who, Doom, and Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

Overall I think with some more work this book has potential, however I feel it has a ways to go.

Thanks for your feedback on this. Glad you caught our hat tips to pop culture. The art has always bothered us with this, and future works are having the problems fixed, both with pencil sketching alone and the layout in regards to the page background color. Eventually, we will revisit this, and update changes to art and the layout. I can guarantee upcoming works though look a LOT better. Lethal Lexicon 2 is a two-year long endeavor, taking a lot of time digging into lethal encounters and reworking art over and over until it is right (much to the chagrin of the art team). Thanks for the feedback again!
