Strike! RPG: Tactical Combat and Heedless Adventure
by A customer [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 04/11/2016 20:46:35

This game turned out to be everything I was looking for in a RPG: Crunchy tactical combat, flexible character creation, simple mechanics that make sense and inspire interesting stories, easy to learn, easy to run, it scratches both my narrativist and gamist itches, and I foresee myself running and playing this for a long time to come! Bravo!

I LOVE Strike, and so my friends. I GM for them weekly and I can testify that this game works great in just about any setting.

While it seems that it might get rather ridiculous with its setup, I can assure you that its tone can shift DRAMATICALLY from one place to the next. One day, you may be a dog mercenary finding loot in a goblin cave, the next you are running from shoggoths in an dark, abandoned laboratory.

The only downside I have noticed is the problem regarding item creation. I found it hard to make shops and such without being very general in an item's description, and I generally refrain from using the built in wealth system.

Other than that, I'd say a solid 5 stars, keep it up, Jim!

If you liked D&D 4e's combat, you are likely to enjoy Strike!; the combat is akin to that, but more streamlined (static damage, few modifiers) and quite frankly more brutal. Level is much flatter; PCs don't gain more HP by level, and a low-level monster can still hurt them. You are not required to use the tactical combat for all (or even any) combats; basic skill rolls can take the place of it, in the manner of Dungeon World's Hack & Slash.

If you didn't enjoy D&D 4e's non-combat stuff, you may enjoy Strike!; the emphasis is on freeform skills and special narrative tricks always available to each character. 4e's "skill challenges" give way to a neat Team Conflict minigame.

Both in and out of combat, narrative comes first, so if you want to light up the darkness with your magic missile spell, then shine on you crazy wizard.

You won't like this system as much if you like the character generation minigame to be lengthy/involved, or if you like poring over gear, spell lists, or feats/talents for just the right advantage or concept when you level. I'm not judging -- it's just not that kind of game.
