The WatchGuard Sourcebook 3e
by Jay S. A. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 11/29/2011 06:44:09

The sourcebook is well laid out, matching the visual aesthetic that people have come to expect from M&M products, with vibrant colors and professional-grade character artwork. My only gripe would be the font choice for the body text as the letters feel crammed to tightly together, making it difficult to read for very long.

That said, the book goes into the Summit City setting, with a map, an at-a-glance section, and a fully detailed history. The history is pretty well thought out, taking time to introduce the various names and events that matter to the setting.

The real meat of this sourcebook however, comes from the character bios. Heroes and villains alike are statted out, with each one being given a full treatment discussing their History & Origins and Powers, and a full M&M 3e character sheet to go with it. The character vary in power level, but the average is about PL 10, which is reasonable for many M&M games.

Even if you’re not entirely sold on the WatchGuard setting, each of these characters can be pretty easily lifted and dropped into your own M&M Supers Campaign with very little need to change anything save maybe a few references to the WatchGuard setting in their Bios.

Overall the WatchGuard Sourcebook is a decent addition to an M&M 3e Gm’s arsenal. The character bios alone are helpful in populating a supers campaign, and the scenarios can also be useful for those days when you encounter GM writer’s block.

New GMs or GMs who don’t have the time to put together their own setting may find this product more useful, as it does a lot of world-building from the start, while leaving enough for new additions to be painless.

Thanks for the detailed commentary and overall very positive thoughts on this first major project of ours! It is truly a labor of love...! I'm curious about the font gripe -- have you tried it on multiple devices and/or using Acrobat or Preview to view it? The text should flow perfectly, and looks stellar, easy to read, on all of my devices (iPad, iPhone, Mac & PC). Curious. I hate losing a point for a program text-flow issue...! :) Still, thank you very much for taking the time to be so detailed in your review. More to come from the WatchGuard Universe soon!!

The WatchGuard Sourcebook (Preview Edition)
by William R. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 08/26/2011 12:21:28

Overall the product was well done.

The character's backgrounds are written well and don't seem to be the usual obviously inspired by comic books type that a person tends to see, and the ideas behind the characters are fresh and very well thought out.

The art was amazing and well done (a point I think some companies don't take as serious as they could).

There could have been a couple more villains introduced for my tastes, though Tailgator is rather enjoyable in my opinion.

The single adventure did give excellent ideas for Voyager's way of handling Tailgator's surprise attack but I felt that there could have been a bit more ideas given for Tailgator's options in the fight for the GM to use instead of the standard brawl til the hero wins idea that was used (creative uses of Surging or Power Stunts spring to my mind).

Other ideas could have been for Tailgator to make use of a possible hostage situation or to place the bystanders in jeapordy of some kind that would distract Voyager for a round or two.

But all in all I found the product to be good quality and useful for games that I currently run.

The WatchGuard Sourcebook 2e/OGL
by Andrew L. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 07/16/2011 22:28:16

This is an excellent product. Each of the characters have a detailed involved history which seem to show a lot of love by their creators in making them. Each of the characters bio also construct the background of the WatchGuard Universe bit by bit which I find entertaining. There are also some nice fleshed out adventures which utilizes both the heroes and villains presented in the book. I look forward to the 3E conversion.

The WatchGuard Sourcebook 2e/OGL
by Thomas F. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 06/04/2011 17:32:33

Bought it, read it through. Really amazing work. Fully illustrated with top notch artwork throughout. Very professional layout and well written. Would buy this as a comic book in a heartbeat. It's currently 2E but a 3E conversion is coming soon, which is fine as our group still uses 2E. I realize this took a year to make (and it shows), but I really want to see more products for this universe. It's a nice match in tone between Freedom City and the Mega-4 universes, with a very diverse group of heroes and foes. Also, for those of you who read pdfs on the IPAD like I do, this book looks beautiful, pictures and all.

Well done, and fellow M&M gm's and players, go buy it ;-)

The WatchGuard Sourcebook (Preview Edition)
by Justin P. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 09/08/2010 15:38:42

This look at what The WatchGuard Sourcebook will be definitely got me interested in what they're going for. The PDF contains quick descriptions of the setting, fleshes out two characters (one hero, one villain) and provides a sample encounter which, in my opinion, really defines the characters in their roles.

The layout and art are great, proving that you're going to get a quality product when this is complete, but the writing leaves a tiny bit to be desired. For example, a lot of text points to things that I am sure will be explained in the final product but feel too rushed or vague to be included here. Rather than take a snippet of text from the finished book this preview would be more enjoyable as a concise summary, almost like a quick-start, than a "teaser". However, this is a very small problem and is not a problem throughout the whole text. Where the writing does shine is in the look at the villain. I think they did an excellent job of focusing on this character to really flesh him out, making it easy to get into his mindset right away and giving you enough information to drop him into any game.

My score for The WatchGuard Sourcebook (Preview Edition) is 4/5 due to some flaws in the writing. However, those flaws are not enough to turn me away. If you like original supers settings I would suggest putting this one on your radar. It's on mine.

Asa Character Sheet (M&M Superlink)
by Joe B. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 11/16/2005 00:00:00

This pdf is pretty good. The art is, of course, quite nice. Unfortunately the backgrounds are quite lacking. The PDF could also use some guidelines to using the character in campaigns (tactics, adventure ideas, etc)to be a more complete product. As it stands, the price is a bit much for one page of material. I was a little bit dissapointed, because i can see what this prodcut could have been with just a little more work.

LIKED: Great Art.

DISLIKED: Lack of character info and campaign guide. Asa Character Sheet (M&M Superlink)
by Gregory B S. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 06/18/2005 00:00:00

I liked this one best of the three current releases.

The art and design are fantastic, but I would have liked more than one page of information. All three (Asa, Apollo, & Kuan Ti)could have been released together. The cover sheet is a waste of space (I doubt many will print it out), and the last page is just the M&M superlink agreement.

If the quality wasn't so high, I'd say these were expensive.

QUALITY: Acceptable

VALUE: Satisfied
Ready to have your butt handed to you. This guy is tough (PL 27). Wow! I don't know what to do with him.

The product is essentially a one page character sheet with a cover and license page.

It is worth it. It is well designed and well thougt out.

LIKED: Graphic design is great!

DISLIKED: Only one page of really useful stuff.

QUALITY: Acceptable

VALUE: Satisfied
