For Gold & Glory
by Gregory S. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 05/23/2019 08:10:27

About 5 years ago now, I had started to get into TTRPGs through 5e, and I have recently started to explore and look into the older editions and OSRs as a GM from the beginning of my RPG career in the past couple of years or so (need to always broaden the horizons of what one knows and what one can offer); and I have found a few that I've liked. This is clearly one of them, and in my personal pages of history and opinion, this is in my top 10 OSRs: rate up there with Basic Fantasy RPG, Lamentations of the Flame Princess, Swords & Wizardry, Stars Without Number, and etc. That is where I personally rank it. And as another had said, it seems to be clearly a labor of love. So I went ahead and bought the hardcover premium color version because I support it, and I also work better with a hard copy of a book in my hands to quickly leaf through the pages when necessary; while also wanting it to last through the ages for as long as possible. I do believe, however, a downloadable pdf for the character sheet should be made available separately; so as to print them off if need be and hand them out to players, or fill them out on pc for games being run online. It would be a great help if it wouldn't be too much trouble. Other than that, I give this OSR a 5/5 stars from this GM (10/10 if I could), for reconstruction and recompilation of the 2e rules in a single volume. A work of art and a job well done.

Edit: A stand alone separate character sheet has now been made available. Great customer support. For a response as quick as this to something that could have easily been ignored, to something as simple as a character sheet, another 5/5 stars from me. Nothing ever gets any bigger than the little things in life, and those are the things that matter most. And to those wishing for a module that they could have to go along with this, I would say to be patient and I'm sure one will be along the way soon enough, just as they said it would be.

For Gold & Glory
by Eric J. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 08/28/2018 08:46:41

For Gold & Glory is an excellent re-organization of the rules for the 2nd edition of the world's most popular fantasy RPG. Clearly a labor of love, For Gold & Glory has compiled all of the mechanics that worked so well -- the solid, fundamental system of the game -- and excised all of the textual bloat that OSR fans will often criticize in the original edition. While, admittedly, slightly more "crunchy" than earlier editions, this book presents the material in a way that highlights its inherent strength and playability, and with a layout that makes the book highly useable as an in-game reference work. And the price cannot be beat when you consider the amount of information provided within it. Though it includes mostly public domain art, the pieces themselves are well chosen and of good resolution quality, which translates well on the full-color printed page.

My only wish is that the creators had the opportunity to expand the game with a supplemental volume or two -- perhaps something that reintroduced some of the classes that were removed from the original version or added in later editions, but designed with the particular flavor of FG&G gameplay.

If you're a fan of OSR gaming, you should definintely pick up a copy of For Gold & Glory. Well worth your time and (minimal) expense!

This is one of the more directly compatible OSR RPGs of the original editions available. (For example, the listings for extraordinary strength are exact conversions.) One unique aspect (that I know) of this compilation are the inclusion of various races (Minotaurs, Ogres, etc) with rules for use as PCs. So, ultimately, this offers itself as a 2nd Era PHB, DMG, MM, & Demi-human sourcebook. Now to be fair, there are monsters missing (only a few Demons, Devils, etc), but there are still plenty. In printed terms (and these examples are only in hardback), you have a choice of lulu, drivethru, or a custom job. I have several lulu books and they seem to have gone on the cheap recently. (Rolling pages on only semi-heavily inked pages for HBs.) They are also smaller then drivethru: 8.25” x 10.75” vs 8.5” x 11”. In lulu’s favor, the images seem crispier. I personally prefer drivethru. One negative is the Strength table where the 3 & 4-5 rows are still double printed. But it's not worth knocking a star off for.
