FiveCore 3rd edition. Skirmish Gaming Evolved
by Alejandro A. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 10/18/2015 20:12:20

Many reviews were written, and all were 4+ stars... SO... if you are not yet convinced that you really really have to get this rules, I tell you this:

Add up (FiveCore 2nd Ed. + Every Star An Oportunity + Five Parsecs From Home) and you´ll start feeling an absolute almost unbearable guilt for the time you lost waiting to make up your mind. But don´t worry, playing certainly will cure that. Thank you Ivan.

LaserStorm. 6mm grand warfare.
by Sean G. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 10/02/2015 16:37:57

Rules Overview

The rules break out each force into 3 battle groups. All the models in each battle group activate together, one unit at a time. Activations are handled by a card draw system, so it isn't an IGOUGO, system. There are some opportunities for reactionary fire/movement, as well. Movement, fire, and necessary moral is all resolved immediately so there is very little record keeping.

The rules offer a limited selection of pre-made troops and vehicles, but does include information on creating your own units with lots of options.

The rules provide a basic rule set for 6mm combat between reasonably sized forces, but most chapters also provide some variant ideas for different rules so you can tweak the game to your taste and play-style.

I am impressed with the rules and look forward to playing more games. I might even attempt to play through a campaign using the included campaign guide.

There is a lot of game inside this book.

Not Just a Brush War. Brush war campaigns for any war game system
by Peter J. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 09/29/2015 18:52:03

I thoroughly enjoyed developing a fictional nation using this imaginative and easy-to-use document. The rolls worked out perfectly. The extra features, like the table to randomly generate a photograph subject for the campaign, are great additions.

Chaos and Circumstance. Expanded random events for FiveCore
by Scott F. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 09/04/2015 12:11:30

A great addition to the fiveCore ruleset. Completely optional and independent, it works well in some games, but if you don't need it you don't have to use it. Phenomenal modular design.

FiveCore 3rd edition. Skirmish Gaming Evolved
by Patrick P. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 06/12/2015 11:50:13

I was looking for a system that would give a quick-playing game for near-future scenarios and I decided to take a chance on 5Core on the strength of reviews I had read online. I'm glad I did.

Pros: There are many.

1) The activation sequence provides 3 randomly determined outcomes, each of which have distinct advantages and disadvantages of the player. They are also derived from battlefield outcomes - basically: normal cautious advance and firing (most often), run like he!! (once in a while), and shoot at anything that moves (also once in a while). Because the player never knows before the activation roll exactly what the troops will do, the system rewards players who use flexible tactics and respond as the situations evolve.

2) The firing system is elegant and gives a set of plausible outcomes without needing a massive number of rolls. As well, the outcomes are based on psychological impacts/suppression as much as on generating casualities, which seems about right to me.

3) It is customizable. For our game, we wanted to have a small number of heroes on one side, a larger number of militia on the other, and a 3rd force with some unusual characteristics. The optional rules allowed us to have all that and we certainly didn't exhaust the possibilities.

4) It was very easy to pick up the rules. Neither of us had played the rules before, and I only purchased them a couple of days in advance of our first game, but we were still able to get right down to business and within a couple of turns we rarely had to look anything up. Yet, despite all that, it did not feel like a simplistic game - there is a lot going on as the easy to remember rules interact within each turn.

5) It's fun! Both of us played the game to its conclusion in a couple of hours and we had a great time. Lots of entertaining things happened and as my friend said, the rules supported an 'emerging narrative' as the game went on.

Cons: There aren't many.

1) I would like to see some diagrams and have some examples of play in the rule book. The rules are generally straightforward to understand and 5Core is quite playable as it is, but I'm a 'visual' person and I would have learned even faster with some illustrating examples.

Nordic Weasel's Battle Pack 1 is really impressive. It is full of useful ideas and game mechanisms. While it is intended for Nordic Weasel's own games, many of the articles are equally applicable to other games. I want to use some of these in my own games.

Not Just a Brush War. Brush war campaigns for any war game system
by Drew T. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 05/11/2015 09:09:59

Delivers as promised, a 20th century "Imagi-Nations" brush war campaign. The Nation Generator gives an unlimited number of scenario seeds, from internal struggles with separatist movements and criminal cartels to proxy wars with "First World" controlled puppet states. The Campaign system integrates the political struggles of a nation at war with virtually any late 20th century combat game. It takes very little work to extend and adapt the system for near-future scenarios or even far future brush wars on colonized worlds.

Clash on the Fringe.
by Alexander W. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 05/06/2015 12:57:55

Like most gamers, I have a lot of different miniatures, with more than a few that might not fit in any particular project. Clash on the Finge allows you to take these miniatures, along with any others you've got and create some unique forces.

This game delivers all the action and adventure that defined the early sci-fi wargames, but with a modern rulesystem backing it up. An alternating turn sequence keeps both players in the game, and reaction fire allows the waiting player a chance to mess with his opponents plan.
The game's D10 mechanic is easy to grasp, most of the time you just roll a d10 against the relevant stat and add/subtract any modifiers, if you match or roll below your target value you have succeded. Combat on the fringe is deadly, with most of the hits scored having a lethal outcome. Clash on the Fringe also comes with complete campaign rules and quick generators, allowing you to easily create (or choose) a conflict and following your force through it as they gain advancements as the campaign progresess.

Clash on the Fringe is very flexible, allowing for forces ranging from a handfull of heroes to platoons of troops with vehicle support on each side. A big assortment of different factions and alien archetypes are included as well, so if you want to see a horde of space-bugs facing off against an army of genetic renegades, or recreate conflict from your sci-fi video game/book/movie of choice, here is your chance!

Disclaimer: I was a beta tester for Clash on the Fringe

FiveCore 3rd edition. Skirmish Gaming Evolved
by Ricardo N. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 04/09/2015 21:05:32

The second edition of FiveCore has upgraded it from a fast-playing modern/sci-fi skirmish game into a great toolbox. The basic mechanics have not changed (thankfully!) but there is a lot more material in this version. The page count has increased from 32 to 93 -- from the addition (and possibly revision) of material from some supplements, as well as new content. For instance, there are stealth rules (from the Tactical Primer), heroes (from Heroes and Horrors) and vehicles (which I presume are from Heavy Metal), and expanded solo rules and campaign rules. There are also lots of ideas listed as "playstyle options" which give it the toolbox feel. Overall, those that want to try this system would do well to get the 2nd edition, as it alone covers the 1st edition and some supplements.

by Darryl H. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 02/27/2015 13:05:16

I have thoroughly enjoyed playing this games, the print quality was good and presentation style very clear and easy to use. The actual game is easy to pick up but with lots of depth . The whole ethos of character and background first really appeals to me, also the whole notion of a no stat character is also exciting. The wealth of material and ideas makes Fivecore interesting which I have found has made me excited about a new game for the first time in ages. Cheers Ivan
