Loved it. But GM/DMs beware, if not used carefully will unbalance game.

Excellent book. A great addition to the d20 game system, something that has been needed for sometime.

This is an excellent sourcebook. I bought version 1.0 but, I just received the new upgrade today. The new version is superior to the original version as it allows flaws to be taken based on a point based system. This allows a lot more choices to round out a starting character.

I do feel that a few of the advantages are too powerful for the down side you must take, but that is easily rectified with a few simple changes.

I've been waiting for something like this for a long time. The current d20 has always lacking in the character development arena. This is especially true when it comes to personal habits, personality traits, traits, etc. This book fits the bill very nicely. Nothing here is too overpowering and under-balanced. I would definitely recommend this book for DM's and players who want to tweak their characters in subtle ways. Well worth the money.

Great resource if you love the Ads/Disads system of GURPS and want to incorporate it into d20 Modern. My players love the opportunity to beef up their 1st-level characters, and the flaws help them add personality and distinctiveness to their PCs.

Even if you don't want to make a "flawed hero", there are "heroic code" flaws in here that give you points in exchange for accepting the burdens of Mercy, Honesty, and other virtues. Hey, if you're going to be a nice guy, you may as well get points for it!

This is precisely the kind of thing that I think D&D is missing. I love this kind of flavor. It's what made White-wolf characters so interesting and I think this book has it for your basic d20 fantasy stuff. I'd be careful as the kinds of powers it gives you can get out of hand pretty fast. Maybe if you were in the habit of starting characters out at a higher level (say like 3rd or 4th), this wouldn't feel out of balance at all.

I loved it for fantasy, and I love it more for modern. This is what every Wizards product is missing. White-wolf was great almost exclusively because of the merits and flaws. Now you can bring that system to the universally applicable, ultracool d20 modern system.

Overall a pretty good product. A nice comprehensive content with a lot of entries. Saves me a lot of work as I was going to have to design such a system myself, but I'm happy emough with this one.

A very useful aide. I've been toying with a point based D20 character generation system and this product helped alot.

The d20 Modern Roleplaying Game from Wizards of the Coast is great if you want to play a heroic character in a variety of modern "cinematic" genres. Trouble is, I watch a lot of movies and read a lot of books, and what if I decide I want my hero to be a little less than perfect or have some sort of handicap to overcome? What if I want to play the anti-hero so common now in modern cinema and fiction? Or what if I'm the DM looking for a little something to make that NPC stand out a little more? Enter the Book of Distinctions and Drawbacks Modern.

I'm going to concentrate on the drawbacks (or flaws) because they comprise the bulk of this PDF. By taking a flaw, you gain points which can then be spent on other things (like skill points, XP, feats, or ability score increases). What I really like is that each drawback is scaled - as the severity increases, you get more points to spend. Take Impaired Movement, for example. My character would get 2 pts. if he had a limp, but 12 pts. if he were paraplegic and in a wheelchair. Guidelines are also given to the GM as to what might then be unavailable to my Smart hero modeled after Stephen Hawking, as well as other flaws - no feats or FX abilities that require bipedal movement, can't take the Inflexible flaw for this example.

The flaws aren't just physical or medical - the list includes a variety of personality flaws, psychological conditions, and even a handful of "supernatural" flaws called Weird Flaws.

The section on distinctions (Advantages) is nowhere near as extensive as the section on flaws. This is probably a good thing, however, as the the core d20 Modern rules already provide Heroes with a multitude of advantages over Ordinaries. Still, there is some good material in this section that might be of use to some. And being "modular", you can ignore the Advantages section and just use the Flaws if you so desire.

As for presentation, this book is "bare bones" - there is no artwork or fancy layout, but it is quite printer-friendly.

In summary, this is an excellent resource for creating PCs or NPCs with a little more depth, a little more realism, and a lot more story possiblities. I felt this was money well spent, and I highly recommend this product to anyone playing a d20 Modern campaign in any genre.
