The Book of Distinctions & Drawbacks Modern
by Michael S. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 05/21/2004 00:00:00

This is one of the more useful products I've purchased for the d20 system. It brings in a complete set of traits, positive and negative, to a system that badly needs more refinement in character generation. A very welcome product. Warning: Make sure your players all agree to use this add-on. It's not fair to the other players for your character to have all these goodies and they don't get any!

Definately adds to the variety of the game. We can make characters that break the mold.

An overall good suppliment and idea. Similar to how GURPS handles advantages and disadvantages during player creation.

These rules are best used for people who want to roleplay out their characters and ideas. It is not a good tool for adding abilities. If used for such you will get a one eyed, albino, with no friends, and body order that then has major benefits in other areas.

Bold Costumes, Black Hearts
by Chris J. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 02/08/2004 00:00:00

Oooh this is good. This is very, very good. I don't play Deeds Not Words, but another D20 Superhero game instead, and I got this as inspiration for character concepts rather than for game stats. After a quick scan through the stat blocks I think most characters should port over quite easily. The first 12 pages are general advice about creating and using supervillains, including three pages of quotes and quips for villains to use. This is great idea to help brighten up those evil mastermind monologues with a few choice quotes from Neitzsche. There's also a table of adventure ideas - these are basically one-liners to spark ideas which the GM will need to flesh out. Ten pages of DnW specific crunchy-bits follows, Villain-only complications and classes. Can't comment on these as I don't know the game. The next section covers ten archetypal characters in great detail, providing game stats for each at several different power levels. Again I can't comment on the game stats, but the author definitely has a good eye for comic book tropes. Next we have five pregenerated villain teams each with their own theme and power level (I particularly like the gother-than-thou "Nocturne" and the golden-age "Midnight League". The next forty or so pages briefly detail fifty-two villains ranging in power level from small-time crook to Apocalyptic doomsday device. Full game stats are given, but there are no pictures for these characters (the teams and the archetypes are illustrated) and the character background is limited to a quarter page including a quote, origin story and modus-operandi. It's enough to give you a handle on the character and a good basis for fleshing out. Finally we have the Random Goon Maker, and the Random Ninja Maker. These are basically sets of tables to randomly generate a villain's minions. It's a nice idea, to add a little variety to the faceless hordes. Appearance wise, the layout is solid and clear, if a little uninspiring. It's in Landscape and optimised for the screen, but prints out clearly. If you're looking for inspiration for supervillain characters,(for any ruleset, but especially for a d20 based game), then I'd recommend Bold Costumes, Black Hearts.

Deeds Not Words Revision 1.1
by Jeremy S. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 02/05/2004 00:00:00

This is a very well-done product. It works best as its own genre (i.e. not tossing it into a game, like having super heroes in D&D). Still, there are plenty of things that can be incorporated into other settings.

Deeds Not Words Revision 1.1
by James T. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 02/02/2004 00:00:00

The best D20 Superhero game out there, as well as the most carefully and meticulously crafted. Not a departure from the D20 System but a smooth adaptation of it, prepared with an incredible, painstaking level of detail. Well written, funny, clever and great--I can't say enough good things about this book.

Thaumatech: Modern Magic Items
by Charles B. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 01/30/2004 00:00:00

Overall, quite a decent collection of magical items, useful for a modern campaign with any positive level of magic. There are a few silly / lighthearted items, which is okay, and a couple of items that could probably have been left out.

But with a couple of hundred magical items included, these are definitely the exceptions, rather than the rule.

Well done.

Thaumatech: Modern Magic Items
by jason f. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 01/23/2004 00:00:00

this book picks up perfectly where the WOC sourcebooks left off. my biggest gripe about them was the lack of magic items, and this more than makes up for their shortcoming. i usually don't like to use a lot of magic rings, but the ones in this book work really well with a modern d20 campaign without unbalancing it. its packed full of goodies, and it inspired several new magic item ideas of my own. actually, that might be the best part about the book... it will help you come up with more of your own stuff. and its cheap!

The Book of Distinctions & Drawbacks

An interesting little tome. Needs a lot of modification for particular campaigns, but I think the meshing of the Vritue/Flaw (or whatever you want to call it) system with D&D is admirable.

Thaumatech: Modern Magic Items
by Darryl J. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 01/15/2004 00:00:00

This product is packed with so many good ideals that I do not know how Scott Lynch does it. There are 200 (100 rings and 100 wonderous items) cross indexed goodies awaiting entry into a game and all of them are specifically crafted for a modern setting. None of that same stat box, different name going on here. There's Oppenheimer's Ring (+10 vs radiation), the ring of sacrifical Striking (+1 to hit and damage, but 1 point of damage with each successful hit), the Bottomless Gas Can, and the Coat of Many Gang Colours. These are just the tip of the iceburg. Just about every item included is cleverly crafted and something that could slip virtually unnoticed into a modern game. The best part is the many lists included. The book lists these toys in 5 different ways - rings alphabetically, wonderous items alphbetically, rings by purchase DC, wonderous items by the same, and finally a grand list which has everything on it listed by purchase DC.

The Book of Distinctions & Drawbacks Modern
by jerry w. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 12/26/2003 00:00:00

This is a very effective way to expand your D20 Modern game. It opens up an entirely new area in character creation and encourages roleplaying rather than wargaming, a constant problem with my gaming group. To anyone who wants to expand their character creation and add a lot of ways for the GM to integrate the characters into the game, I heartily recommend this book!
