Dead Sea Murder
by David T. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 07/07/2011 15:27:32

Actually using this in a Fate based game using the Spirit of the Century book. Since Fate is based on Fudge there is little rules tweaking needed. Plus this is a nice little pulp tale of mystery and murder, all the Terra Incognita stuff works well with the SotC system really with only a little bit of tweaking.

To the actual adventure and module. Its well written with lots of detail, both historical and plot relate so that you could easily create an expanded adventure in the area detailed plus all the main and side characters presented. They've also made it free form enough, a trade mark of fudge really, to allow the GM and party to play the adventure pretty much anyway they like. Be that a Victorian style low action high deduction mystery, or a more pulpish action packed treasure hunt.

Also since this is a murder mystery they designed the adventure so that any of several characters can be made the murderer, and different clues can be sprinkled throughout the adventure to point to the GMs choice or act as red herrings. This gives it a little more replayability should you end up with some one who has done it before joining a new group who are seeing it for the first time.

Overall a fun little adventure with a historical and religious back drop.

The Collectors: The Burning House
by Sylvain B. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 06/17/2006 00:00:00

This may well be my single best RPG-related read ever. In my humble opinion, the material presented in The Collectors is novel-worthy.

LIKED: This game allows players to portray demons while brilliantly avoiding most of the theme's "clich?s". An authentic sense of humanity is conveyed to the characters without needing to involve any kind of rule mechanics. A very well written introductory scenario titled The Burning House is included and also acts as a great tutorial on how to handle all of the game's concepts.

DISLIKED: Surprisingly, the game seems to benefit from very little following and, unfortunately, no support material is available for this fantastic setting. Although obviously not the focus of this product, an extra 2 or 3 pages of rules on combat resolution, including a sample of common modern weapons, would have been a nice addition to "complete" the package (the rules can still be expanded with the readily available Fudge material).

QUALITY: Excellent

VALUE: Very Satisfied
Priceless
by CASSANDRE L. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 07/15/2005 00:00:00

The story behind Priceless might provide enough material for a four-hour LARP, but that's where it ends. Be advised that this would need some plumping to produce a table-top adventure of reasonable depth, and one would probably need to braid in a few subplots to support the superficial horror of the overall concept.

LIKED: It's likely a fine afternoon's entertainment for the theater-LARPing set.

DISLIKED: Because it was written with LARP in mind, it lacks the depth I like in gritty horror and the gore I like in survival horror. It feels like an abstraction, something that would need considerable development to create a moving story.

QUALITY: Acceptable

VALUE: Disappointed
Pariah
by Stuart A. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 02/06/2005 00:00:00

Ever wanted to play a teenager with psychc abilities in a world that treat such abilities as less than welcome? If so, then Pariah is just what you're looking for.

One of the few commercial FUDGE settings, Pariah is great for a one-shot session or a short campaign, I don't really think it provides enough material for a long-running campaign.

With that in mind, the content is excellent. The background is well written and does well to capture the emotional distress on teens realising that they are "different". The default setting and adventure provides a good introduction to the sorts of conflicts and challenges the players will face.

Definitely one for strong roleplayers - not in any way a hack'n'slash.

LIKED: Well written, nicely presented, consistent setting.

DISLIKED: Nothing.

QUALITY: Very Good

VALUE: Very Satisfied
The Collectors: The Burning House
by Craig C. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 12/12/2004 00:00:00

OK, I really like the background in this game. It is cool. But what has completely turned me off from this book is the included adventure, which has a homosexuality theme. When I saw this, this book kind of got put in the back of my shelf.

QUALITY: Disappointing

VALUE: Disappointed
The Collectors: The Burning House
by Brett S. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 08/16/2004 00:00:00

An excellent Fudge product, presenting simples rules for a usable Fudge setting (modified modern-day) along with a very good starter adventure. Excellent as an introduction to Fudge, and The Collectors setting is easily adaptable.

I forward to any future releases for this setting.

Pariah
by Max C. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 02/24/2004 00:00:00

A nice and surprisingly low key game, well judged and suitable for a short mini-campaign. Worth picking up as it is a classic theme which surprisingly few games really address in this way.

Dead Sea Murder

Excellent mystery setting. If you want an adventure that isn't all combat, but instead requires the players to do some thinking, then this is it.

Priceless
by Kirk R. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 07/30/2003 00:00:00

Caveat: I have only read Priceless, and have not actually played it yet.

Priceless is a nice, straightforward yet spooky LARP adventure. The writing and layout are well done, and character descriptions and instructions are detailed enough that even inexperienced players should do well.

In Priceless, your players get to play the role of young children, who notice that mom's not quite right today. This could be quite a bit of fun, especially if you've been playing more traditional roles for awhile. You need to solve the problem before bedtime, or bad things will happen.

Some minor gripes: Without giving anything away, I do think the conclusion is somewhat abrupt, and might leave players a little dissatisfied with the outcome. Also, the plot is somewhat linear, which may constrain more experienced players.

What I really like about Priceless is that, even if you're not a LARPer it's very good source material for such tabletop games as "Little Fears" or any other RPG featuring children as PCs. With a little effort, you could probably even graft it into more traditional RPGs too.

If you're looking for a LARP that's quick to setup and run, and some or all of your players are inexperienced, this is a good one to try. Even if your group is more experienced, the scenario would be easily customizable towards your group's tastes. And if you run a tabletop RPG with children as PCs, Priceless would drop in easily.

(Replies: feel free to contact me at kirk at rafferty.org if you have questions. I will not share the PDF with you, nor will I give plot elements away.)
