Frankly, not a good ""multiversal crossover"" rpg.

Metagene Super Hero Roleplaying Game
by Carson F. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 01/30/2020 04:33:07

Always have I wanted a good superhero roleplaying game. THIS IS IT. With lists of cool powers, different types of hero and origin, and incredible potential for inspiring character arcs and villains, this is perfect for those who wish to integrate themselves into the incredibly popular genre of superheroes.

P.S. They put the power of CLONES on Order- I mean, Page 66. Thought we wouldn't notice, but we did.

Although I haven't playtested it yet, after a first read-thru, this is a really nice rules-lite (2d12 + stat + (Knowledge) vs difficulty - default 13) supers game that has a lot going for it. Easy character creation (roll, buy or choose) including Type (from Athletic to Witty Hero, which gives stats bonus - Aura, Body, Brains, Moves - and a special ability), Origin (from Battle-Suited to Normal, which gives free powers and/or points to spend on suggested powers - from Absorption to Wild Card, ranked Amateur to Cosmic, each allowing you to do more things with it - and weakness (from Achilles Heel to Weird-looking, which gives more points to spend)) and Knowledges (from Detective to Speech-Making, broad or specific skills that can be used for bonus to related actions in and out of combat.) Adventures (play sessions) are divided in phases, starting with Downtime (patrol, normal life), Discovery (a crime or disaster awaits a hero), Investigation (finding clues about the villain), Combat (taking Minor or major actions from Activating powers to Tactics, with secondary stats - Dodge, Vigor, Protection, Sequence - coming into play) and Resolution (Xp and advancement). A nice touch. This is listed as version 0.4L, so I'm guessing more stuff will come to add to the game, but it's already pretty complete (Gears, GM advice, basic Earth-Omega setting, sample NPCs and optional rules are also there), there's just an image missing on p136. So, if you're looking for a less crunchy supers game, this one might just be the droid you're looking for ;)

Invulnerable Super Hero RPG: Vigilante Edition
by A customer [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 12/29/2015 00:21:43

I recently bought this because I had been looking for a new super hero game. Somewhat restless with the choices out there, I think Invulnerable is probably one of the best in design. Far superior thatn most games of this genre, it offers a up to date approach in its mechanics. It has a level of detail and complexity, that will really allow you to make the characters you ahve always wanted. I liken the system, to a mix between Mutants & Masterminds, and the old Aberrant RPG by white wolf. It blends the d20 system to a point, but uses the 3d6 for a more bell curved approach. Which i prefer over the d20. I can't go into too much detail, because this book is huge. But seriously folks, there are some great mechanics and ideas here that really sets it apart from all the others out there.

Here's just a few quick peeks for those who are interested.

  • Attributes & Skills range from 1 to 10, 5 being human average.
  • Powers range from 1 to 10, each point in a super attribute is like a +3 bonus to rolls. So each point in a power really counts as something. Then you can buy " effects" which are like power feats in mutants and masterminds, which tells what you can do with it.
  • A "damage point" system with hit locations, and a determination pool (for stamina and energy)
  • Detailed origins, power sources, and motivations to help spurn your hero on.

Thanks! Yes, Aberrant had an influence on my design, along with Heroes Unlimited, Champions, and lots of other games. Thanks for noticing, and for the review!

Invulnerable Tabletop Super Hero Roleplaying Game
by Joseph M. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 09/12/2012 18:40:20

Refs and players, here’s the informative part of this review of the superhero-themed tabletop RPG by Imperfekt Gammes, “Invulnerable”.

Folks, this thing isn’t invulnerable.

It’s not even nigh-invulnerable.

Instead, it’s nigh-unusable.

This “Invulnerable” game supposedly runs on an engine called Cosmology. However I never got the chance to find out whether Cosmology is an engine or a train wreck, because the text reveals an egregious disregard for editing. Not only does “Invulnerable” omit necessary data, it includes conflicting data. For an example you might take a careful, line-by-line stroll through the sample character creation process; compare the data there to the guidelines for character creation elsewhere in the book.

And, apparently, due diligence is to “Invulnerable” what Kryptonite is to Superman. Given how long errata have been out, the book’s creators seem to have had plenty of time to fix the book’s error-ridden e-version. As you might guess, they failed to do so before my recent download. Further, the term “errata” refers only to the very short list of errors that the book’s creators are even aware of. Based on activity in an Imperfekt Gammes online forum, it’s my opinion that they’re waiting for random internet contributors to tell them what’s wrong with “Invulnerable” instead of taking the initiative and putting the text through a thorough review themselves.

(I hope I sound disappointed and irritated. I am. I spent some time looking forward to this game. Then I spent even more time reading it. Carefully. I wish someone had. Like an editor.)

So is anything good about “Invulnerable”?

Actually, yes.

(Here’s the constructive part of this review.)

Somebody put some thought into Chapter 13. Its explanation of the game’s default setting (the world of Earth-Omega) is tantalizing, being detailed yet generic enough to apply to a non-Cosmology system. (Though Team Training available to characters keeps the Cosmology system plugged into Earth-Omega.)

Back nearer to the beginning of the book, the Cosmology Engine seems like it might actually be fun and easy to run. Neato bits? It’s got ‘em. For example, all characters have Motivations that can positively or negatively affect their luck (called Determination, which can be spent, lost, and regained during the game!), depending on whether the relevant player chooses to honor or ignore those Motivations.

Plus, Cosmology’s attractive point-buy-based character creation and damage rules (and the “Team Training” elements) are begging to be tinkered with, so there’s something there for you game mechanics. Grab your wrench.

But, in the final analysis, “Invulnerable” is more than nigh-unusable. As it is, it’s Unplayable.

If it gets fixed, I might give it another chance . . . unless something better comes along first.

Until then it’s a nice, shiny pile of spare parts.
