The Ravenlands Bundle 2: Inn and Mine (1" square = 5')
by Aaron H. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 01/21/2011 23:09:06

The Ravenlands features a fantasy (or historical) village and its surrounding area. The battlemaps are beautifully rendered in 3D with realistic textures and plenty of little additions here and there that bring the landscape to life. The PDFs are presented in an easy-to-print format and avoid becoming too busy. Each PDF contains an overview of the individual battlemap along with some of the battlemaps including a second version of some of the pages containing overlays adding additional detail.

Map 3, River and Bridge, is a beautiful map with loads of possible applications. The terrain is that of a simple woodland area with a steep-banked river running through the middle. What appears to be the equivalent of a hunting lodge resides in amongst the area and sits next to a wooden bridge. There are three sets of overlays with different bridge options including two collapsed bridges and a much more simple, operable bridge.

The River and Caves map takes the river from River and Bridge and follows it along to the mouth of a cave, and its contents with the overlay. The map is a combination of wilderness and a rocky outcropping. There is a path that leads from the cave to the river and heads off the map in another direction. The overlays add new options to the cave along with a look at its interior.

The Raven Claw Inn map continues the village scene presented in Bundle 1 of the Ravenlands setting. But don’t be fooled by its name, this battlemap contains more than just an inn. There are a total of 8 structures including one with a dock on the Ravenlands river. The overlays remove the roofs from some of these structures and add detail to their interior.

The Mine and Quarry battlemap finishes out the Ravenlands setting and contains an awesome looking open-pit stone quarry and cave-dwelling mine. This battlemap is loaded with details included some wonderful overlays that take a look at the interior of the mine. Included in the map is a series of rails and a couple of mine cars.

The Ravenlands Bundle 1: Castle and Village (1" square = 5')
by James P. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 01/16/2011 15:43:49

This series of maps is full of lush full color detail. The 1" map grid suits many standard game systems and is rendered on the drawing in such a manner as to be easily accessible without detracting from the overall image.

The gaming structures depicted on the maps are detailed enough to evoke many classic gaming scenes but open ended enough to allow for a creative gamemaster to develop their own encounters.

Rangers, Druids or any PC with skill ranks in herbalism or survival will find the highly detailed plant life a potential cornucopia of healing herbs. Or perhaps certain flowers could provide poisons for assasin characters. Imagine a map where your PCs are encouraged and rewarded for exploring the areas with their eyes!

The Ravenlands features a fantasy (or historical) village and its surrounding area. The battlemaps are beautifully rendered in 2D with realistic textures and plenty of little additions here and there that bring the landscape to life. The PDFs are presented in an easy-to-print format and avoid becoming too busy. Each PDF contains an overview of the individual battlemap along with some of the battlemaps including a second version of some of the pages containing overlays adding additional detail.

The first map for Ravenlands is The Castle Raven. The castle is partially in ruins with what appears to be solid surrounding walls. The wall textures are well-done and the foliage textures are phenomenal. There are a handful of wooden buildings and the wood texture is very detailed. I like the addition of the animals, flowers, and especially the large trees. The shading is good for giving a 3D perspective of a 2D design. There are wonderful looking overlays for depicting collapsed sections of the perimeter walls.

The Battleground of Old battlemap follows the river (from Castle Raven) through a section of the area outside the castle which is apparently a location of an old battle. There are lots of details like cobwebs and lots of shrubs. While this particular map lies within the Ravenlands setting and is a part of the map set, it can easily be used outside this setting and can be used for virtually any genre or sub-genre.

Sacred Grounds features the remaining portions of Castle Raven along with what appears to be a temple, 1-bedroom cottage, and a pair of regular cottages. The overlays give the interior of the temple and the 1-bedroom cottage. There is a great looking path between the structures along with what looks like a dead forest in the corner (or part of a forest with dead trees).

Town of Raventon is a great battlemap but is centered on an open-market rather than just living areas of the town. The buildings are well-done and the market stands are great. I love the amount of details, not only from the overlays but with the standard map as well. The overlays add even more details including a group of horses in a fenced area. The entrance for the castle is found here along the path, but can easily be used for any number of things.

The Outer Gates could be considered as a bonus to the Ravenlands battlemaps in this bundle, although it’s part of the keep for Ravenlands. The walls of the keep look great and the landscape is filled with a rocky facade. This keep could definitely help to protect your village.

Tall Ships 2: Ghost Ship
by Michel G. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 01/05/2011 09:57:03

Ships of Fantasy, Tall Ships 2 : Ghost Ship A review

Many a time have I seen ships used in RPG’s with detailed maps of the floorplans. Only problem was that all decks were printed side by side on the same sheet. In other cases there were no grids for tabletop gaming, of the drawings were not to scale.

The nice folks at Scrying Eye Games have come up with inexpensive PDF’s you can print out, cut-up as needed and slap it on the table. Mind you, you will need a color printer to fully appreciate the work that has gone into this. If you want to protect your ships, but don’t want or can’t afford to laminate, you can always head do Staples and buy those plastic sleeves that go into a 3-ring binder.

Ships of Fantasy, Tall Ships 2: Ghost Ship is 10 pages long including cover and credits. The document has one page with instructions and a web link. Try it. Your will be redirected to all sorts of other goodies.

The actual ship takes up 6 sheets of 8.5 X 11. There also an extra page with nothing but water. You can print this last one several times for combat scenes. This makes the Ghost Ship a little smaller than, say, the Exlorer’s Ship. Maybe ghosts need more speed and less space. As for the ship itself, the only difference is that the sails have a fog like aura around the sails. Everything on deck is neat & tidy. I was a little disappointed with this one and I would have preferred a more gruesome look otherwise any other ship can be used. But it is still worth the price.

I can hardly wait to see other ships and who knows…. Bigger scenery like a lagoon?

All in all, this product will be useful for tabletop miniatures for any type of RPG.

Gondolin gives these products a 4.5 out of 5, because perfection is not of this world. Also, because there are no scenes of the lower decks, nor the fore and aft cabins. This may not be required buy all players but at the very least, a black drawing on one page per level (therefore not to scale) would have been nice. And the ship is not scary enough.

Ships of Fantasy will make you want to say «Harrr! Matey.»

Tall Ships 6: Greek Galley

A nice set of ship plans for naval adventures. This set contains three two-section that form the decks of galleys when placed together (two different sail designs, and a third without sails), plus sections for a beached galley. Just looking at this set makes me want to break out Mazes & Minotaurs and have an awesome Harryhausenesque sea encounter with Jason and the Argonauts throwing down on a Kraken or some such thing. Man, I really wanna play that game now.

A nice set of ship plans for naval adventures. This set contains three two-section that form the decks of drakkars when placed together (two different sail designs, and a third without sails), plus sections for a beached drakkar. I used to work with a guy who wore way too much Drakkar Noir. It was brutal.

Tall Ships 3: Merchant Ship

A nice ship plan for naval adventures. This set contains 14 sections that form the deck of a tall ship when placed together, plus an open water section for creating room around the ship for pirate ambushes, boarding parties, or monster attacks. This is a big ship, and I'd bet that hull is full of some fine goods that any band of pirates would love to plunder. Buy this set and see if I'm right.

Tall Ships 2: Ghost Ship

A nice ship plan for naval adventures. This set contains six sections that form the deck of a ghost ship when placed together, plus an open water section for creating room around the ship for pirate ambushes, boarding parties, monster attacks, or any other terrible encounters with the living creatures from the meat-world (shudder!). So here's something I've always wondered - do ghost ships displace water, or do they just move through it the way that other ghosts (and ghost vehicles) can move through walls and stuff? Sadly, this product does not address this pressing question, but that's no reason not to buy it.
