How to Make a Fantasy Sandbox

Dry read, not a lot of good resources, and doesn't add anything new Expect more for the price tag.

A decently sized region for a sandbox setting. An absolute must get if you're looking for a region that has enough detail to get you started, but not too much so as to bog you down. A true successor to the Judges Guild's Wilderlands material if ever there was one. And it's free! At most just get it to steal stuff from.

How to Make a Fantasy Sandbox
by Ryan [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 11/04/2024 09:43:03

Absolutely a must buy for anyone who runs a sandbox game or who strives to create their own work. Rob Conley is legendary among the classic D&D world and his work speaks for itself. It walks you through creating a world, as large or as small as that is for you, with as much depth as you want. One example is wind currents, ocean currents, and the resulting humidity and watershed effects. If that's something you want in your world to make as realistic a world as possible, it's got this info. If you just want the basics and don't want to wander too far from your creative trail, it just tells you "have continents in this location be wetter and this location be drier" which works amazing. It walks you through creating a history, a location, region, and populating all of those with people, places, and things to do/see. All the way in a very explanatory and easy to follow example in the Island that's created. Just do yourself a favor and pick this up and read it. You will not regret it.

It is a small setting, but it's also a good example of creating a small sandbox and turning it into a starting point for a bigger adventure!

How to Make a Fantasy Sandbox

"Give a GM a sandbox, you've set him for a campaign in that setting. Teach him to make his own sandboxes, you've set him up for life!"

That's more or less the logic behind this product. Unlike big publishers who can offer you scores of adventure paths, a small OSR publisher can't offer you such choice... in fact, even big OSR publishers might not be able to!

OTOH, he can teach you to make your own sandbox settings to fit in the setting of your choosing - and with a system of your choice!

As a matter of fact, I don't plan to use Robert Conley's advice with his system of choice, or even with any of the related OSR systems! But his advice is going to fit just fine with my d100 games...

And yes, the advice is valuable, despite the fact that I've been running sandbox games for a while. Even just using it as a list of "don't forget to do this" steps would save me lots of disappointment!

So, what are you waiting for?

How to Make a Fantasy Sandbox

The most thorough process for making a sandbox campaign setting either large or small. The examples explain the process in detail. I’ve paired this with another product and have a setting full of gameable locations, NPCs, and quests.

I can't currently, read the product because I don't do well reading PDF's, so I print them out, myself - if the product is REALLY worthy, I'll buy a hardcopy. There is a flaw in this PDF that doesn't allow it to be printed on two sides of a sheet of paper - 90 pages was already a lot, but 180 is unfeasible. I've spent over an hour, tinkering and testing with other products (they work, so not my printer). I even tried shrinking the print size down to just ten pages, but no dice. It sucks to leave this as a review, but the publisher allows no other means of contact - if it's here, on DTRPG, I couldn't find it, the web site has no "Contact" feature and their blog, likewise has no place to reach out. Yes, I looked before I wrote this - just added tot he frustration. If a fix is made, I intend to edit this, but here's where we stand, now.

Sorry to hear about your trouble. As for contacting me you can email at robertsconley (at) batintheattic.com. Sub in the @ symbol for (at). I will be glad to work with you through the technical issues of printing the PDF. I do booklets and double sided printing myself all the time with Adobe Acrobat. One detail that is perhaps not obvious is that the page size is digest 5.5 x 8.5 not A5 which is roughly 5-7/8 x 8-1/4 in. This can be seen by clicking the Menu and then Document Properties on Adobe Reader or Acrobat. For How to Make a Fantasy Sandbox I printed a test copy, double sided with Adobe Acrobat using digest sized paper on my Brother Laser Jet printer. Hopefully that helps. If you choose to email me, give me the details of what PDF software you are using to print, the printer, and the paper size you are trying to use, and perhaps I can figure out how to help. Thanks Rob Conley

This is a really strong campaign setting, and it's pretty incredible how much is in it for free.

Great setting to get started in any campaign. You have some areas but most is left up to the GM/DM. Not only that but it is entirely FREE!! DMTimothy

A lot without it being too detailed. I love settings like this where it's up to the DM to decide what else to include.

The Majestic Wilderlands

An interesting idea, well-executed. I don't have the same nostalgia for Judge's Guild that the author does, so I didn't end up using this, but it was an early OSR effort that was well ahead of its time and much higher quality than most home-brew campaigns.

Appreciate you taking the time to write this even if the Majestic Wilderlands is no longer for sale. I am working on an updated set of rules called the Majestic Fantasy RPG and the part of the setting that was my original will be repurposed for the Majestic Fantasy Realms that Blackmarsh is part of.

Wilderlands of the Fantastic Reaches Color Maps

Purchased all 4 sets of the color maps and they look great. Nicely laminated. However, I was a bit dissapointed that one set of maps had been folded in half. I imagine these maps will hold up for a lifetime:)

Wilderlands of High Fantasy Guidebooks (Print) [BUNDLE]

Note: this is a review of the printed maps, not the contents of the maps themselves.

For a base price of $48.92, you get eighteen map sectors across thirty six posters. the overarching map is absolutely enormous; taking up a massive 108" by 72"(9 feet by 6 feet) total size if you laid it all end to end, thats bigger than the largest tournament supported Warhammer 40k table! Each hex is a 5 mile area which means this map is a staggering 154,440 square mile area, that's larger than the entire state of Montana! (or a little over half the size of texas) Each part of the 18 sections of the map are represented by two posters that have a 4 hex overlap to help you keep track of where you are when you are moving poster to poster which is super handy if you don't have them in a binder.

A noteable feature of these maps is to me that these are hex-crawl ready, with numerated hexes that are just begging me to play a nation sized wargame across them. couple that with the vast array of different terrains to help guide your creative mind through and the descriptions of sweeping woods covering mighty mountains and deserts that vanish into the distant horizons will keep a dungeon master from ever going bored.

I love this collection of maps, If not for the amazing illustration of this classic D&D setting, then for its sheer size and weight, i find it to be well worth the price. although i will note that for the best effect please go and get the printed versions of the guide booklets also done by Bat In The Attic Games, paired together they are truly the essence of old school D&D.

I put the entire collection of posters into an architect binder ordered from north west to south east and presented that to my players who, like me, were absolutely astounded and now want our next campaign to take place in the wilderlands.

Now if you'll excuse me, i have to go explore the Holy Cities in search of ancient treasures beneath the desert lands
