Quick Covers- Landscape Edition
by Nathan R. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 04/05/2011 04:59:02

Four neat covers, all pretty much of the design from the product description. The primary change between each colour is a change in the colour of the "parchment". There is plenty of space top and bottom for your own product logos and text. I would have liked a little more variety amongst the covers, perhaps changing the colour of the gem, or little alterations of the scrollwork.

Standard Stock Art: Creature Pack
by Nathan R. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 04/05/2011 04:54:13

A selection of classic fantasy creatures, as you may not have seen them before. I particularly liked the Demon (the orange horned figure on the cover). All of these pictures are high res, with vibrant colours. The Demon and Skeleton are in dynamic poses and the goblin has a creepy "Gollum" feel about it. The Ogre is okay, but a little static for my tastes.

Quick Covers- Buckled Cover
by Nathan R. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 04/05/2011 02:05:35

This is a really great set of covers. 4 high res .tif images ready to go. I love the fact that each cover is a subtle variation of the others, making them ideal for a series of books/products. The "hole" in the centre of each image makes the covers easily customised, which is a bonus, too. Very impressed overall.

Standard Stock Art: 9 Fantasy Portraits
by Ben G. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 03/22/2011 07:23:23

The price is right on this collection of 9 pieces of fantasy portrait art. The artwork is good and I can see myself using this in one of my publications.

The license included is not terribly restrictive and allows for easy use.

The one criticism I have (that's keeping this at four stars and not five) is the application of the tattoos on the individual portraits. In many cases they don't appear to be organic, fitting the forms of the characters but more of a 2d line drawing applied over the artwork.

These portraits will be fine for beefing up inside art in your work or using them to illustrate a campaign or character.

High resolution pictures, but some of the poses seem unnatural and awkward.

Standard Stock Art: Issue 4 - 20th Century
by Julie D. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 08/10/2009 11:51:39

Fair line art. Not as crisp as I would have liked. Some of the images appear blurry. Some of the stock art images aren't "stock" enough, so to speak, because they would require a rather specific reason to use (like the WWII themed griffons?)

Standard Stock Art - Quick Covers Vol. 6: Stitched Flesh
by Megan R. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 07/29/2009 09:56:39

What you get is a zip file with eight high-resolution full-page images, and the full terms of the licence - which despite the usual poor quality of legal writing is reasonably clear and extremely generous: for your purchase you may use any image or part thereof in any publication (including PDF, print or website), commercial or not, provided you credit the source and have copyrighted your work. (In UK law the act of creation automatically copyrights it, but if you favour the belt and braces approach, add a quick © and date to make sure!).

The eight bits of artwork are basically the same - see the cover picture for this product - a top and bottom border of something vaguely flesh-like. The squeamish can be glad it's not too realistic! It comes in 'flesh' colour, green, black and an odd khaki-shade which from the filename is possibly intended as rotting flesh. For each, there is a plain and a blood-splattered version; depending on just how nauseous you want it.

While the product may be called 'Quick Covers' these images might be better as internal top and bottom page borders, perhaps a bit narrower (remember you don't have to use the whole image but may select a part if that suits your needs better). Whatever you decide, if you have a need of a slightly creepy edge or cover, this is worth consideration... I'll certainly haul it out if I fancy writing some necromancy material!

Standard Stock Art: Issue 2 - World War II
by Simon B. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 08/29/2008 16:57:47

So I had an idea for a campaign book for my Superhero RPG (Squadron UK) set in World War II. Trouble is I needed some artwork for it. Sure you can trawl the 'net searching for photos and pictures which may or may not be public domain. However, this pack gave me what I wanted without effort and at a good price. The artwork - by Rick Hershey - is consistently good and an effort has been made to include a range of picture types. There are full scenes, a range of individual figures and even some graphics of WWII weapons. All in all a damn good stab at giving people what they need.

Good points: Very reasonable price given the open-ended license. Good quality artwork. A range of picture types given.

Area for improvement: None, really. I mean I can't expect the artist to get inside my head and give me exactly the range of pictures I need. I presume Rick is American so it's only natural for him to include lots of drawings of GI's that I was unable to use. At least he compensated for this by including a couple of British-types (and even what seemed to be a belgian).

Standard Stock Art: Issue 1 - Places and Locations
by Peter I. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 09/25/2007 06:10:56

Standard Stock Art: Issue 1 - Places and Locations is the first product in the Standard Stock Art line of products from Small Niche Games. Each product in the series contains a selection of stock art, in this instance of places and locations for any campaign genre, and a license agreement whereby these images can be used in products or websites. All illustrations are by Rick Hershey.

The product comes as a single zip file that contains the license for using the images, as well as two interior zip files that contains the images. The first zip file contains 9 images of places and locations, while the second contains a bonus set of images of random items such as rings and potion vials or bottles. The images contained in this product are all black and white, 600 dpi TIF images that come in an assortment of 1/4 and 1/2 page formats when printed. The license incidentally also allows modification of the images contained in the product, as well as contains legal and usage guidelines.

Places and Locations contains nine images along with a selection of bonus images. These images can be used in modern, fantasy, or science fiction areas, although some locations will be more suitable to certain genres than others. The images contained include the following - a dark cave, an inn (house or tavern), a garden path (lane with trees), a blacksmith shop (for modern genres), burial ruins, a woodland path, a mountain path, the deck of a ship (fantasy or pre-industrial times modern), and a second dark cave. The bonus images include mundane or magical rings, pendants, a treasure chest, a lock tool set and several bottles, vials or potions.

My initial impressions of this product were that the art was good, and the artist had shown some creativity and imagination in putting the stock art images together. As black and white images, without any significant greyscale, they can appear quite flat and lack depth, but the artist has done a satisfactory job of overcoming this restriction. In some places the lack of greyscale means the image appears darker than it should be - rather than throwing a shadow, it's plain black. This also means that in some place it's hard to discern exactly what you're looking at, particularly if you take a quick glance at some of the cave images that are meant to be dark. The images are very detailed, down to the finest features, making for a more realistic and thorough image altogether. In the bonus items there's quite a bit of variety as well, making the images overall more useful. The high resolution means that these images can be used over the gaming table as well for props and the like.

Overall, I think many people will find these images useful, particularly because they are cross genre, and given some of the variety in the images. They will make useful additions to any product or website, although the lack of greyscale does hurt the depth of the image in places. Generally, good quality artwork at high resolution, with wide utility.

These images are geared more for use in print products (although you can certainly use them for web pages). Many printers won't accept or charge extra for grayscale images, which is why they were done in straight B&W. It also makes them easier to color. Thanks for the review, Peter. - Small Niche Games
