Everyday Heroes™ Core Rulebook
by Markus K. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 06/08/2023 02:18:28

This game is just fun, it's the best version of a 5e game I've ever played! There are a few good reviews on the net, so I'll just highlight two points that I particularly like in addition to the excellent game design:

  • Versatility: just look at the Cinematic Adventures and you'll get the idea. From the Middle Ages (Highlander) to the future (Total Recall), from monster action (Kong) to undead drama (The Crow), all that and more can be played excellently with Everyday Heroes.

  • The layout and fonts: With some publishers, readability is often no longer a criterion when designing a role-playing book. But here it is! The book is nicely and clearly laid out, the fonts are large enough for tired eyes at the dim gaming table. This is done in an exemplary manner.

If you have even a slight interest in modern 5e, do yourself a favor and give this game a try.

Everyday Heroes™ on Foundry
by Jack H. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 06/03/2023 14:36:02

Honestly, I don't even know where to start, this is a fun system, and well thought out, Backgrounds matter, professions matter, feats matter, and what I mean is, running a few games so far, it's not a, "Well you have to take this feat all the time", it's every Feat has a purpose and depending on how the game is run, could be useful in 80% of sessions, I'm excited to see what Evil Genius throws up down the line, fantastic Game, Fantastic and simple system, and just a nice feel to it all.

With that said about the system, the Foundry mod does a good job, and Evil Genius has been very forward on what problems they are currently working on, mod is a work in progress, but they are listening and communicating with the community, it's pretty solid right now, and can only get better from here on out, imo.

Highlander Cinematic Adventure
by Andrew G. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 05/29/2023 20:08:23

I enjoyed this product a great deal, it focused on the first movie, ignoring the contradiction in later efforts. It gave clear and concise rules for running immortals in the style of the first movie (other rpg producs o; the subject seemed to get to involved in the small stuff). Many of the Everyday Heroes classes fit well with the immortal origin, making a wide range of possibilites for Character Generation The adventure was good, though I must admit the 15th century first act was a bit too far back for my taste, on the plus side it was well constructed and gave the players lots of opportunity to develop their characters as people rather than a bunch of stats. if I had any gripe it was that the PDF was SLOW, not sure how to fix it but moving pages had a noticible lag.

overall Im very pleased with my purchase and how it plugged in to Everyday Heroes

Everyday Heroes™ Core Rulebook

For a game billed as a modern-day roleplaying system based on d20 Modern, refreshed for the 5th edition.

The game sure does a lot to separate itself from its proclaimed origins. For a game that is

committed to the idea that games should be enjoyed by everyone.

and

representing a wide range of heroes in our games and encouraging players to express these concepts without any limitations imposed by the rules.

they sure went out of their way to only include humans, and not have magic available to the players, other than ki, sort of.

Upon a subsequent re-read, exchanging AC for a Defense and Single Use Armor Save (or writing armor save in a way that it confusingly looks like single use) is one of the dumbest mechanics I've ever seen.

Buyer's remorse is strong with this one. I feel like I bought less than half a game (which is literally reinforced by only having 10 levels). I paid 30 bucks for a $10 product. The one saving grace is that it has enough information it can be heavily houseruled.

Pacific Rim Cinematic Adventure
by Carl A. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 04/09/2023 20:29:40

I wasn't sure about this system when the Kickstarter launched, so I didn't back it. I see I made a mistake. The system looks good, and the books (I've since bought everything except Escape from New York) that's out now, and I'm going to buy Kong as soon as it comes out here. The quality of the PDF is very good (though there are some charts with issues on Good Reader and Preview, Acrobat doesn't have the issue so it's not a deal killer for me).

Specifically for Pacific Rim, they include a larger scale called "Titanic Scale" to handle Kaiju and Jaegers. Its very similiar to Mega Damage in Rifts, and works in this situation because a normal person realistically can't really interact with a monster that's hundreds of feet tall in a meaningful way (except as toe jam). You need something like a Jaeger to fight Kaiju, and if everyone is doing that, then wouldn't it be much easier to scale the ranges, damage, and effects of these things to more manageable numbers/sizes instead of having kaiju do 100d6 damage for a light attack and take up your entire game table if you want to use battlemaps?

You can also customize your Jaeger with gear and equipment, though there aren't a ton of options they are enough to make them each unique without inducing option paralysis. There are two different kinds of resource limits, the bulk of the equipment and the neural load imposed upon the pilots. Bulk is the same concept as Everyday Heroes uses for normal scale eqipment. Neural load, though, limits the individual equipment a character can use and is based upon their proficiency bonus. Your Jaeger could have a weapon installed with a 4 NL, but if your prof bonus is only 2 or 3, you won't be able to activate it, making it dead weight since it still has the same bulk. Its a reasonable way to handle different characters having access to better equipment in hteir Jaegers as they level up.

Jaeger don't have hit points, and at first I was a bit skeptical about this choice. Instead, damage done to the Jaeger is split among the characters piloting it as psychic damage. The Jaegers can still be damaged, but this is handled through damage to specific systems. Your Jaeger could have a weapon damaged, or an arm blown off, and there are systems for getting this damage fixed and backgrounds features that can make this process faster. I think it's a good way to handle Jaegers without having a ton of additional data to track. Kaiju can also have location based damage like this, but they only have one damage level for each location, in addition to having overall hit points. This reduces the number of things the GM has to track, while retaining flavor and distinctiveness.

There are rules for The Drift from the movies, and this is one of the things I think they nailed in these rules. To pilot a Jaeger for more than a few seconds, you need two characters to share the "neurological load". This process doesn't always work flawlessly, and some people are more compatible with other specific people than others. Depending on how well two people are able to connect, you might find the Jaeger doesn't operate very well (like having disadvantage on all rolls), all the way to being better than the sum of its parts (using the better of the two pilots rolls on every action, and doing more damage if both pilots succeed in an attack, for example). I think there's some great role playing potential in this system.

There's a new class for the Wise Hero archetype called Bonded Twins. While I like this, since the Jaegers require two pilots, I'm not certain on how they are supposed to operate 100%. The concept is for a single player to have 2 characters so they can pilot a full sized Jaeger "by themselves" without needing to make two whole characters up. And I think I understand how'd they work (they have couple of pages explaining them), and they have some benefits over a traditiomal character, but they have downsides, too. They appear to be balanced, but I think I'd have to play one in an actual game to see how they work for sure.

Reading this has me very interested in the King Kong rules that are due out in a couple of days, as the two sets of rules are supposed to be compatible.

Everyday Heroes™ Core Rulebook
by Matthew A. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 01/14/2023 01:08:16

It can be challenging to convert a system designed to run medieval fantasy into something that handles modern tech, and simulates a fast, cinematic style of play. I think it succeeds. The core essence of the 5e rules are here, and should be familiar to players. There is just enough variation in firearm types to be interesting, without turning it into a gear porn, simulationist style game. There are unique mechanics for handling armor and cover, and I think they are brilliant. They present a perspective on hit point loss that makes a lot of sense, in light of the fast hit point recovery that exists in 5e. They built on D20 modern in a way that is familiar, but changed it in ways that keeps it fresh. This is a large book, with lots of info. The art is excellent, mostly with a unified style. There is a large section on creating and running your game. There is a rogues gallery with 75 pages of enemies (including some supernatural, alien, and horror related stuff). Charts with all of them organized by CR, and a section on creating your own enemies (without building entire characters). Also, a nice section of rules variations from 5e, so you have one place to looks and be reminded of differences. Can you have a modern rpg without vehicle chase rules? No. And they've got them. One of my favorite thngs is that you choose a profession in addition to a background. Between Background + Profession + Class, you really can create a great variety of characters. Should be able to imitate anyone from whichever fiction you like. They say they'll be an expansion for Urban Fantasy at some point. Hope its high on the list for 2024. There are other systems that I enjoy, but can't get friends to play because they don't want to learn an entire new set of rules. Everyday Heroes should be the game you can finally get friends to play to take a break from heroic fantasy. Absolutely recommend this.

Absolutely amazing game that has exceeded my expectations. I was a fan of D20 Modern back in the day and have been patiently waiting for a successor to it. After years of running D&D 5E, my players and I are ready for a change of pace but are very used to the d20 mechanics from 5E. This game will help us branch out to a different style of game but still keep the mechanics we are used to. Ive already come up with several campaign ideas (one of which using the Escape from New York supplement).

As to all the comments from people salty anout the system only going to level 10, I fully support the level cap. Ive discovered some game design concerns when characters go higher than 10 in D&D 5E so I ususally end campaigns at level 10 now. Even if Everyday Heroes went higher i still would set campaigns tl end at 10.

Looking forward to more from this Publisher in the future.

I have been running MD20 ever since its released and loved the book, now with EDH it have the same style and atmosphere as the old version and easy to get into for those that loves 5e. If you love D&D you are going to love EDH that puts you into the modern setting, with the many books coming out soon with the crow and escape from new york, kong skull island and pacific rim on the way, you will have so many classes and feats to use that even new or veteran dms can run their own world with this book. Highly recommended.
