Mother Hoarfrost
by karl l. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 03/02/2022 14:57:11

It's been a long time since I have been this excited about one particular publisher's offerings. The Rookery have knocked it out of the park again. The artwork and in particular the typesetting and layout are exemplary- this is a quality product from a mature studio of industry stalwarts who have a clear vision and are building a living breathing fantasy world.

Mother Hoarfrost is like a more Grimdark than another battling nailing game's version of the Baba Yaga, an epic and deeply mythological creature who will easily haunt your player's nightmares. The content is densely packed- it is a small handout but the hooks are fantastic and I cannot wait to use the Frostwife in one of my upcoming sessions.

Highly recommended!

Cold be heart and hand of stone, cold be travellers far from home..

I will admit that I had to ask of what "Awareness" represents, being only a WFRP gamer. But Mother Hoarfrost is a brilliant little supplement, truly ready for any system and thereby well worth it's weight in gold.

The creators individual styles shine through in this glimmer of creativity, if this is what we can expect from Rookery Publishing moving forwards then very good times are ahead. The book positively oozes atmosphere and horror.
Truly system agnostic with a simple and intuitive way of representing the characters abilities to allow for adaptations to any fantasy system, this is a must have for any fantasy RPGer that wants to inject some weird into their campaign or as a one shot. Get this, simple as that, and while you are at it get Well of Bones too, another incredible offering to absorb into your setting.

The pedigree of the writers for this beautifully produced supplement should say it all. And given the cheap cost, you should probably buy Well of Bones for those reasons alone. But I can see exactly where I will use this in my existing dark and dangerous campaign. It will fit right in. 5 STARS

This book contains many great tips and tricks for converting agnostic properities to flushed out rulesets. the designers are obvious legends in their field of game design, so it is no surprise that this book is a worthwhile investment especially if you love dark hooks and locations.

The Well of Bones
by Sebastián G. M. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 01/14/2022 22:04:57

The Well of Bones is an evocative, system-agnostic location that grabs you from page one. Literally. As I read the history of the well (before the actual site intended to be played was described) I found myself thinking "man, I want to play this scenario that happens four hundred years before the actual adventure". And it only gets better after that.

The information is presented in a clear design that is easy to navigate and the art is superb.

The adventure site has many possible story arcs, and the "central" theme doesn't have a closed end but, in case you find yourself out of ideas, the story seeds hint just enough to a couple of possible closures.

One of the most important aspects to me was that the guidelines to drop The Well of Bones into any system really help you do that, and it doesn't fell as if they gravitated to an obvious system of reference.

An excellent, profesional product with an incredible price-for-content value.

You can tell instantly that everything about this has been lavished with attention, from the excellent world-building, to the beautiful art. With a few easy tweaks, thanks to the material being source agnostic, I've added this to my D&D campaign with relative ease. Well worth checking out for the price!

I love this book. It's dark and moody but filled with character. Some of the ideas and character designs are freaky and original.

I appreciate that this is also system agnostic, designed to fit whatever game system you are playing. It makes it something that could be slotted in to almost any setting.

I hope to see many more books by this creative team.

The Well of Bones
by Alan L. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 01/12/2022 18:25:52

The Well of Bones is a small supplement detailing an ossuary hiding various dark secrets, a location which can be naturally fitted into nearly any dark fantasy setting.

The book itself is filled with dark, evocative art which manages to look appropriate to the varied potential settings The Well of Bones is intended for. There are extensive maps detailing the eponymous location, which are conveniently provided in both labelled and unlabelled formats. Additionally, the NPCs descrbed all have their own art.

The characters within are provided statistics in a system-agnostic fashion based on attribute archetypes, which is explained in a good level of detail to allow GMs to integrate them into their chosen systems. More narratively, a decent level of thought has been placed into the motivation of the location's central NPC. The culture, rituals, and guild-type practices of the lesser NPCs are also expounded upon.

The history and mystery of the titular Well of Bones are laid out in such a fashion that there are enough facts and possible answers to satisfy most GMs, but there remains enough grey area for anyone running this material to put their own spin on it. The promise of future The Coiled Crown material leading on from this is appealing to me.

Overall, I think this product represents excellent value for money and manages to dance that fine line between exposition and enigma.

The Well of Bones is dripping with atmosphere and not just bone tears. The writing and the artwork are both top notch and really give you a sense of the place. Plus there are little touches of genious here and there, like the "You'll never guess.." section for the named NPC. I am really looking forward to the next Rookery supplement.

The Well of Bones

For their first publication Rookery Publications has set a high bar to follow. Fantastically illustrated with exceptional writing this is a worthy stand-alone system agnostic location that can be dropped into anyone's campaign. The Well of Bones is a well laid out, and wonderfully written piece, with evocative artwork to match the juicy descriptions within it's paragraphs.

The introduction to the Well of Bones sets a tone, which should immediately get creative juices flowing, and even without following the actual description of the locations within this supplement, you should be able to come up with a suitable location for your own game.

The locations are well detailed and being the Well of Bones to life. The inclusion of an annotated map as well as an unannotated map is a major plus as most publishers forget that players like maps, and GMs always struggle to not let the cat out of the bag when showing a well annotated map. Well done Rookery Publications for this!

NPC and denizens of the Well of Bones are good, although it does take some time to get your head around the system agnostic stats and skills Rookery Publications uses. A more detailed explanation of the stats and skills used within their system agnostic material may have been useful here, but any GM worth their salt will be able to use what is provided and make it their own.

Adventure Hooks. Not only are adventure hooks provided to give GMs a reason to have their players interact with the Well of Bones, the publication also has snippets of adventure hooks, both within text descriptions as well as some call out boxes.

Overall this location screams horror, suspense and possibly even terror, although it doesn't have to be. Dark humour and comedy can also be found within The Well of Bones and with some forethought some of the adventure hooks provided can be tweaked to give this publication enough material to run many months of adventure.

The Well of Bones

While aimed as a plug and play location for a fantasy, typically grim-dark, setting there really isn't any reason not to let the Well of Bones inspire you to place it into nearly any setting.

Need a cult idea and hidden church for Call of Cthulhu, or a Post Apocalyptic hideout for a band of scavangers, or even an aging recycling facility in the underbelly of a Gothic spacehulk, with the minimum of effort Well of Bones can be easily adapted to fulfill any of these.

The Rookery have their own system agnostic ratings for NPCs that along with their character profiles should provide a GM with more than enough information to plug them into their favoured system with minimum frustration. Considering I usually have to tinker with NPC statistics to balance around my party this is actuaslly a better format for me to work with.

And that's not even mentioning the rich details that seep in from Rookery Publication's own setting for their forthcoming campaign, the Coiled Crown.
