Outgunned

This game is absolutely amazing. Backed it up its Kickstarter campaign and couldn't be happier. Not only its system is fast, agile and easy to learn but also captures perfectly the Hollywood action movies spirit. Furthermore, the art of Daniela is gorgeous. What else can you ask for to a TTRPG?

Extremely fast paced and good system, really gives what it promises, games are quick, fast and easy to run but feel exactly like an action movie should, difficulty is there however and things can get out of control if the group stops thinking during some crucial moments, for those times were roleplay is more relevant there are always a handful of mooks so they can drop the one-liners while throwing dice without thinking.

All in all, this game delivers exactly what it promises.

Dreadful cliché though the expression is, it's suitable for children of all ages. Conceptually reminiscent of 'The Borrowers' and similar tales but very much its own thing; with detailed setting, history and lore that are a pleasure to read for their own sake. The artwork is delightful and really enhances the experience. Can't recommend it highly enough to anyone looking for adventure in a world with just a hint of fairytale about it.

Outgunned - Quickstart
by Raúl C. L. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 05/18/2023 06:41:10

I fell in love with this game as soon as I knew about it on Kickstarter:

Outgunned Kickstarter campaign

Outgunned is a fast-paced TTRPG that tries to recreate the mechanics of the action movies in our tables. And it does it very successfully IMHO, if I can say.

The Quickstart Guide not only gives us a glimpse of the rules, so we can have an idea of what we can expect to find in the main corebook.(once it is published), but also includes a ready to play One-Shot so we can test them (and taste them) in our tables.

At the moment of writing these lines, the "One Hero Army" Stretch Goal has been unlocked, which will allow to enjoy Outgunned with just 2 persons (a player + the GM), so we can emulate the classic one-hero movie "is all that stands between the bad guys and the world". You know what I mean: John McClain in Die Hard, Jack Bauer in 24 or John Wick in... well, John Wick movie are very good examples. I am sure you know someone who would be very happy to play Outgunned. Well, you don't need a big party anymore to enjoy this game!!

As you would have deducted by now, I have gone all-in with the Kickstarter campaign. 200.000$ and increasing, A LOT of stretch goals unlocked (which means a lot of extra items and content) and a much more surprises yet to come (or so that claim the creators). I can't recommend you to do the same thing as me but I can recommend you, at least, to take a look at such successful Kickstarter campaign. You have the link at the beginning of this review. What could possibly go wrong with that?

Outgunned - Quickstart
by Guy L. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 05/14/2023 03:32:25

I had the strong belief that Broken Compass had the best game mechanics out there... but the masterminds at Two Little Mice succeeded to improve upon it!

The new system, a.k.a. Director's Cut, is as simple and elegant as the Fortune System they had created for Broken Compass, but is even more efficient for hectic cinematic action, encouraging the players to act wreckless.

This Quickstart provides enough rules and a scenario for a quick to set up fast & furious test drive of the game. Once you try it, you can't go back.

I went all in on Kickstarter on Day 1, and I'm looking forward to getting the full gamut, which will sport more detailed rules, pregens, an 80s setting, a campaign, additional settings (sci-fi, swashbuckling,...), and plenty of stuff to enhance the game experience (dice, cards,...).

Get Outgunned: There's no substitute for living action heroes adventures!

Outgunned - Quickstart

Product- Outgunned System- Outgunned Producer- Two Little Mice Price- $0 here https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/433185/Outgunned--Quickstart?affiliate_id=658618 TL; DR- Shadowrun lite action movie?? 98%

Basics- Getting too old for this! Welcome to the world of 80s action movies! Outgunned is a light weight RPG focused on action movies from the 80s. Let’s break this down and see what’s up!

Actions and dice rolls- This game has attributes and skills. When you do anything, you pick an attribute and an associated skill, count the number you have in each, and then roll that many d6s. This number can never go below 2 and can never go above 9. Your goal is to get sets of the same number or symbol on the shared dice. Two is a basic success and three of a kind is a critical. Most actions you want to do require critical success.

Feats and rerolls- You further customize your character by getting feats. These abilities often get you rerolls for specific actions. You can also reroll dice if you get a basic success to try to get a better success. BUT, you lose that success if you fail.

Adrenaline- As story candy! Adrenaline is the story candy of this game that you earn by acting like your characters. You can spend one to get an extra die on a roll, one to activate some feats, and you can spend six to get the spotlight. Spotlight is when you are a god among men doing crazy things, saving lives, ignoring pain, or whatever the heck you want!

Combat rounds- Combat is very free form in this game. The heroes take a turn doing anything, and the bad guys respond. If the heroes succeed on their actions they can do whatever game plan they had or just injure the bad guys. For the response players need to tell the director/GM how they avoid damage and make a roll. Failure means losing grit/HP. There is not a number of bad guys, but instead a giant pool of grit that the bad guys share, so you don't get one shot kills on bad guys too easily, but you do get an action movie vibe where heroes kill a wave of thugs.

Ok, on to my thoughts.

Mechanics or Crunch- This is a prelaunch for the kickstarter, so you can’t see everything. But I am intrigued. The basics of add two numbers, roll that many dice, and count sets is an interesting one. The bad guy hit point pool is fun and an easy way to keep the action movie feel. I do have some rules questions on how to do all that, but the full rules will hopefully explain more. 4.75/5

Theme or Fluff- Ya, this feels like an action movie. I’m honestly surprised there are not that many puns in the book, but it feels like an action movie in terms of the rules, art, and characters. 5/5

Execution- PDF? Yep. Cheap intro? Yep. Hyperlinked? Yep. Free adventure? Yep. Pregens with nice art? Yep. SOLD! That’s all the things I need out of an intro to get me and my friends to the table. I read it in about 15 minutes and now I think I could run the provided adventure. 5/5

Summary- As I get older, rules light and fast is more and more fun. I also like brainless action movies where bullets and popcorn flow in equal, reckless abandon. This feels like that. I have the basic system of Shadowrun (add number and roll d6s) with the simplicity of an indie game. I have some questions on mechanics, but its a FREE intro. Those will hopefully be fixed in the full game. I’m in for the kickstarter, and you reader should at least check out the free PDF. Solid intro to this game. 98%

Outgunned - Quickstart
by Tim C. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 04/14/2023 00:27:48

Outgunned focuses mainly on action from 80s movies. Basically a great idea, with many interesting ideas and mechanics.

Unfortunately, the amount of small mechanics is almost overwhelming even without any comparison to other systems. Significantly parts of bookkeeping, resources and transformation, lists, tables and special features to keep in mind.

Most of the rules are only hinted at in the Quickstarter, which is okay as far as it goes, but says little about the game that will be released later. Veteran players will find solutions for open questions like

  • What means [Repeatable]?
  • How to get new Mags after the first miss-shot?
  • Is [Quick Action] a free quick action or does it need an aditional quick action? but for beginners it could be a challenge.

The artwork and writing style is fitting the setting quite well.

Those looking for a narrow action-packed setting and more detailed rules will definitely like the game.

Without spoiling too much, I found the included adventure very railroaded in important parts, with elements that would work great in a movie, but often declines the players' freedom of choice. As this is the main part of the playing experience I had to substact two ★★. But I think with a much more narrativly open approach the full game might earn a full rating.

A setting I can really get behind! It is always nice to get a new rpg with a regency era feel to it, and that combined with borrowers and faries just make it all the more interesting.

A very well designed game, the art is amazing and the setting itself is very interesting. I've become a big fan of the system of these games, look forward to the other books when they come out.
