Temple of 1000 Swords
by David [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 02/04/2025 04:15:50

Excellent adventure! The mood is set by the streams choked with rusty swords, which provides atmosphere and an interesting initial problem - how do the heroes deal with avoiding getting sliced to ribbons every time they have to wade down a corridor? There are quirky magic items, two interesting competing factions, an excellent social puzzle in dealing with an entrapped vampire that they are very strongly motivated to free, a compelling and non-linear quest to complete, and an eccentric god to meet! My players loved this adventure and I loved running it. Very easy text keys to each area, well-written, and full of unusual and interesting things for PCs to do.

Affordable (very!), different (setting/tone-wise) yet easily grokked, perfect for a one-shot session. This needs to be in every GM's backpack.

I really have enjoyed reading this anthology. I've already plucked out the temple of the god of thieves and children and plunked it into my regional capital as a potential Thief initiation site. I already had a deserted bug temple of Coleoptra underneath my regional capital with some men made of bugs like from Frank Herbert's "The Green Brain". I already had a couple of levels of bug servants, but now I can add the Skitterlord as an enhanced big bad. I really enjoyed the Wizard's laboratory puzzle dungeon which also fits nicely in my high magic setting. I haven't immediately thought of a spot to incorporate the Singing Stones in my world, but the quirkiness and the opportunity to try to incorporate a misunderstood, grandmotherly and well meaning medusa into my game is too fun to miss. The Lost City and the Cynaedecians are in my world so any opportunity to incorporate NPC's wearing bird masks and pretending to be birds is so appreciated. I haven't had time to give the fourth module/one shot a good look yet, Looks like there are some meat eating 6' tall Dire Chickens though. That has to be good. Have not looked at the bonus material yet. I got the pdf for $12. Certainly worth that. Oh and there is an imprisoned elven warrior always spouting aphorisms. "It's always darkest before the dawn." "When the going gets tough the tough get going. " " Its not the dog in the fight, it's the fight in the dog." My players are going to kill this guy, maybe before they rescue him. " What's the matter maggot? You want to live forever." Im sorry I love this character. Sorry though it is incorrigible or incorrigibly. I am going to have to start following Brad Kerr cause this stuff is great.

I played The Singing Stones (you can read it in the preview). It was really excellent. It reads quickly and easily, and there are tons of things for players to do. It allows them to be very creative and create hilarious or moving scenes. This particular module adds a unique ambience, both visually and musically. I've been playing for over 30 years, and these 3 sessions were some of the best I've had.

Wyvern Songs

Witch Girl Adventures Rule Book (194 pges at DriveThruRPG) was designed for a magic school girl setting, or a Harry Potter setting. I used this as my RPG with a D & D setting. I did change some of the rules so that I could simplify the character sheets. I used the first adventure in the product Wyvern Songs (also at DriveThruRPG, 110 pages). To solo this, I used The Trials of a Young Wizard (48 pages, same place) with a yes/no/maybe oracle. I created four PCs, a male fighter, and a black cat for Ann the necromancer. This cat can look into your soul and know your deepest, darkest secret. He is hoping to learn how to speak so that he can blackmail his victims.

The adventure started when the mayor of Nanlet paid the PCs to investigate the problem at the lighthouse. Once inside they went up and then down. The first trap that they encountered gave the fighter a severe neck wound. As he was dying, Ann told him her plans for making him into a zombie (she is still first level though, so that is a problem). The first monster they encountered was a giant fire beetle. Kyla used her alteration magic to make it smaller. Anya, the mentalist, used her frying pan to smash the bug. They did have a problem with the insect swarm and the Skitterlord. They used oil to start a fire. It did kill the two pests, but it also destroyed the lighthouse (Oops!).

The PCs tried to disappear into the sunset, but they were intercepted by four older witches. “We know what you did. You did not complete the job. Four thieves escaped. Use this magical device to find them and then kill them.” The black cat looked into the eyes of the witches and was terrified. “The cost for destroying the lighthouse is this cat.” The ugliest witch scooped up the cat and put it in a bag. The PCs continued their journey and did survive the covered pit trap. Later they set up camp and slept for 90 minutes. They were attacked by five kobolds, my dice kicked me in the butt, and the PCs were captured by the kobolds (how embarrassing). Everyone then slept and in the morning the PCs were in charge of fixing breakfast. Anya did cook it, the PCs pretended to eat it, and the kobolds suffered from food poisoning. The PCs took the kobolds’ weapons, tied them up, and left them behind.

At dusk, the PCs watched as the thieves climbed up some ivy vines into the second story of a mansion. There was a party going on the ground floor. The PCs climbed up and the fight started. Three of the PCs went down, and Ann was captured. They were tied up and left up there on the second floor. A ginger cat came in wearing a necklace labeled, “Princess”. It watched them, waiting for them to give pets and compliments. Ann looked into its eyes and Ginger became Ann’s new pet. Ginger used its sharp claws and freed the PCs. They exited the mansion and spent the night in a farmer’s barn. They gave up on the idea of killing the thieves. At one time they had 542 gold pieces, but the thieves took all of their gold.

Give this a try!

Temple of 1000 Swords

I don't know where Kerr came from, but we need to go back to where ever that is and bring back more like him. The dungeon has a bevy of of role play and memory creation fodder. The dungeon is easy to place any any campaign (as long as you don't mind adding a funky sword god into a pantheon), fun rewards, and interesting things for players to mess around with. The capstone of the adventures is the AFTERMATH and cleanup that can happen upon conclusion. Between Hideous Daylight, and now the Wyvern Song adventures, Kerr is a strong new voice that has my attention.

Kerr's adventures are such a joy. The adventures are organized, fun to read and run, and makes the dungeon master and players just burst with inspiration for further sandbox fun. More OSE material please, this is some of the best out there.

This module is awesome. It's got a lot of character and was really fun to run. My group got lucky and managed to blitz through it in one session but there's enough content for 2 or 3. The hex map format is great, and every hex has something interesting. I wish I could find more stuff like this.
