Knights & Legends Tabletop RPG
by Andrew C. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 11/20/2018 05:03:35

I bought this on sale, only $2 so I wasn't expecting a lot. I was intrigued by mention of simple and strategic combat and a 'powerful toolbox' for fantasy rpg adventure.

I'll just say that the description vastly overstates the content of this book.

The first 10 pages (p. 4-14) are setting material which gives a very brief overview of an entire fantasy world.

There are many classes presented, but for the most part they are only distinguished by the number of bonus points they can add to their basic stats and a single different ability. For instance a human paladin gets +2 to attack evil and undead foes, while a human warrior gets +1 to attack all foes.

I also note that for each race there are maximum ability scores listed for each gender, which seems a distasteful in 2018.

The rules then list one page of 'super abilities', including about 30 spells and another 12 special abilities. Each one of these 'super' abilities gets one line of description. This description usually neglects very much rule content.

For instance a spell 'Electric storm'. The effect is 'casts lightning on all foes for 9 MP'. no mention of range, damage, duration etc.

There is no explanation of how many of these super abilities a character should have, if they gain more over time etc. There is a tutorial section later that explains how many powers the sample charcater gets, but no guidlines beyond this.

There is then 1 page of combat rules. The 'strategic' system mentioned in the description boils down to:

  • roll initiative
  • make an attack by rolling a d20+bonuses - target's defence. Anything left over becomes damage.

Similar rules are provided for magic attacks and super ability attacks. Not clear what the difference is.

That's it. No rules for movement, positioning, actions in combat, anything. Just stand there whacking each other until somebody runs out of health.

Two pages of equipment is presented with prices, but no/very little explanation of mechanical effects. What's the difference between an iron sword and a steel great sword? Make it up yourself I guess.

There is no mechanic provided for task resolution outside of these very basic combat rules.

A page of monsters gives a name and one sentence description for each, but no stats or game mechanics. The GM is advised to make these up depending on the challenge they want to give their players.

There are also a few pages of what passes for adventure design, but this (again) gives a couple of examples with no mechanics listed.

TLDR: This is not a carefully crafted masterpiece or a powerful toolbox. The actual game rules as stated could fit on 2 pages. The rest consists of incredibly vague and general advice or examples which seems to refer to more mechanical content, but do not explain it.

If you are looking for a mechanically simple game for building a fantasy adventure, any of the various 'retroclones' of D&D would be better, such as Swords and Wizardry, Labyrinth Lord etc. Moreover, the basic rules sets for these games are free and far more comprehensive.

Hello Andrew C, First of all thank you for your purchase of Knights & Legends tabletop RPG. While your review is somewhat accurate, it doesn't 100% reflect the whole game. I can see you've purchased the core book at 05:00am EST, and roughly 17 minutes later you wrote a review. That's according to my notification settings and timestamp. It's hard not to believe you already knew more about the game before purchasing it, your review comes as prematurely written. Stating the game rules could fit in two pages is fake and inaccurate. The public is free to make to their own mind.

New artwork gave the game the sharpeness it needed. This is one of those really cool games with not enough exposure.

Very well balanced system, the dedication and amount of work put into it really makes this game remarkable. Generous of you to do a free upgrade. 2E is by far the best version!

What I enjoy about K&L is the straight forwardness, time saving and lore friendly names. Liked that little easter egg in the names list ahah.

Nice tale with couple forks on the road. My only complaint is that the adventure isn't broad enough to fit a whole party. Good for starters though, it does a fine job warming you up to the game mechanics.

The standalone freedom of the brand, no dependencies to other systems. Fair to say it's beginner friendly and a good choice for other players as the title is getting quiet popular. Troy's and Scott's reviews are poorly done and inaccurate, let's keep it honest! 100% good grammar in all books by this author.

Incredibly barebones text pages that still take 15-45 seconds to load, if it doesn't outright crash any device you read it on. Others have pointed this out and been told "that's not true." Many spelling and grammar errors. Others have pointed this out and been told "that's not true." This looks very much like a translation from another language, so I won't be terribly harsh unless proven otherwise. Searching within the document always takes you to the table of contents, no exceptions. Page 36 is just the table of contents again in the middle of the book, but with descriptions of what the sections were. Several repeated pages, sometimes exactly the same, sometimes an outdated and updated version of the same thing. Most of them just blank tables. The map is printed twice on two adjacent pages. (The author assures us this is not to bloat page count).

It does the thing most publishers decided to stop doing ages ago: make men dumb and strong, make women weak and smart. Hope your character concept fits into that binary. The equipment list is just that: a list of equipment and prices. No stats are provided, but they do cost you money. Potions and the like at least have some effect. The enemy list is just that: a list of enemies. No stats are provided. Super Abilities (spells/powers) take up less than a single page total, and have single sentence descriptions that don't explain the details of what they do. Character attributes are determined by both a number, and a series of dots. Each dot, though, adds 1 to the numerical score and nothing else. So, why not just use the number exclusively? Five of the attributes have derived stats, except that the derived stat is just equal to the existing stat. WHY NOT USE THE BASE STAT? THERE IS NO CHARACTER ADVANCEMENT despite what the description says. There is absolutely nothing about "advancing in classes and abilities".

Non-combat rules: None. Really. None. Combat rules: You roll for damage and subtract the enemy's defense stat. Really. That's it. No movement rules or anything. "Selective Targeting" is supposed to be a "called shot: mechanic, except that it doesn't give guidelines other than "it's up to the GM what % chance it has, and what penalties it applies."

"Roll a d20 and I'll make something up" was fine during high-school lunch period when you were a teenager, but this is a product that costs money. Do yourself a favor, have a few friends over and create your own RPG over a weekend instead of buying this. It'll be worth your time and probably better.

EDIT: Because the author decided to reply to this by immediately pulling the victim card and not addressing ANY of the valid criticisms, I'd like to point out that he flat out says English is his second language in his YouTube videos promoting the game, (also, when you know 4 languages, its pretty easy to spot when things were translated by a non-native speaker due to grammar). I never once mentioned Google Translate nor his name or country of origin, and yet...

Blank table locations (because the author also insists that you tell him what's on certain pages of his book to prove you read it): Pages 14, 32, 40, 43, and 44.

Bias implies I compared the game to another, unfavorably, and I did not.

You didn't address anything I said.

Of course my name is Julio so you assume, Hey this guy isn't American! this is google translate! Very smart and logical way of thinking there. Acrobat reader by adobe is free on both PC and Smartphones. Thank you for your purchase kind sir, I assure you this answer was not done on google translate. As for biased reviews such as this I can hardly take them serious or make something productive out of it.

Has an actual decision you can make in that you can kill the leaders in either order, but it somehow feels even more railroaded.
