Farrago 01 for Shadowdark and OSR TTRPGs
by Fritz C. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 05/19/2023 16:28:51

Let's start with the good: the items are pretty good, I do enjoy the magical instruments in particular, I have a couple tweaks in mind for them, but overall they're good. What I don't like about this supplement is a few things:

  1. The booklet style setup for the printing. The first and last pages are each on a full sized page. 2-7 are each on a half page, so you think 'Oh, I'll just print these and staple em together and have a little booklet with all this info.' NOPE! The pages are sequential, which sounds fine, except when printing it as a booklet, the first and last pages need to be paired together, in this case 1&8, 2&7, 3&6, 4&5. Then when you put the book together it is actually in the right order.

  2. The CLASS (the reason I bought this supplement vs the others Dark Raptor has put out). I want to start with the flavor, I LOVE the flavor of the class. He's a bookworm. But the first gripe I have is the talents, roll 2d6 at level up and creation to get a talent. Roll snake eyes to get a free language, cool. Fits with the theme. Roll 3-6 to increase str, dex, or con? Why? How? Dex I could understand, he writes a lot. But str and con? The description says he is not a fighter, so why is he bothering with a str score at all? Also the chances of rolling 2d6 and getting a 3-6 is ~38%. That's important in a second. Next on the talent table is a 7-9. This can get you an increase to Int, Wis, or Cha. Int is obviously needed as he is a scholar type class. My issue is that this is arguably the strongest stat he should have, especially as the required stat. But there is ~ 32% chance of increasing this. So your most important stat has a lower chance of increasing than stats that have NOTHING mechanically to do with your class?

  3. This one's actually a mix between the class and 1 item. It is a required item. For 20gp, that takes up 4 gear slots. Almost HALF of your minimum inventory space. Spoilers for the item, it's 20 sheets of paper+a pencil, a notebook+a quill and ink, sealing wax+seal, and a writing board. Now I take 2 issues with this, the cost PAIRED with a requirement to have it; and the 4 gear slots. The gear slots I feel could be made 2: writing utensils, paper/notebook. If the character is required to have something, I feel the charge should be minimal or nonexistant, especially if you are going to require them to give up on so much inventory space.

Creator Reply:
Thanks for your honest thoughts. Sorry I haven't responded earlier - I was busy putting together the next 7 issues. Let me reply to your points one by one. 1) You should have been notified by DTRPG that I changed the formatting of the PDFs. Pages are now presented individually instead of in spreads. That said, the issues aren't really meant to be printed (although I print 2 pages/side in landscape format, double sided, which would allow you to read each issue in order, and have the whole thing print on 2 sheets of paper). If your PDF program has a function like this, you could ask it to print it as a booklet, and the pages would now print appropriately. 2) I'm sorry you don't like the Scriptum character. You've raised some good points about the bonuses - I'll have to go back and reassess. 3) The required gear for Scriptum: well, that's what allows the character to do their job. And that's the point - it *costs* the character (and the party) a lot to have someone who can both decipher unknown texts AND make money for the group as a scribe. A Scriptus wouldn't be able to carry treasure, torches, or much of anything else and still do their job. It's your game - you can handwave the requirements, use a Scribe character (I've seen at least two out there), or simply not use a class that allows for reading/writing. Thanks again for your thoughtful words!

Treasure: Casket of Beauty

This is a great magic item for parties who are heavy into role playing and come up with creative uses for magic items. I loved this one and look forward to more creative products from the author.

Treasure: Cursed Sword
by Christopher S. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 07/10/2017 08:45:41

I enjoyed this and was able to easily place it in my campaign. It's a lot more interesting than a Cursed Sword -1 and a Remove Curse cure-all. You could even add it as flavor to something like the 5e Berserker Axe.
