EZD6 Core Rulebook

Sensational system. For all the reasons others have said. For me its the PERFECT balance between rules lite yet still mechanically sound. There a few rules/terms that could probably use a little clarification, but these have been addressed by the author on his Discord and will hopefully make there way into the corebook at some stage. Until then there is an FAQ document that can be found on his Discord which clarifies all these minor queries.

This is awesome! I offered to run this for my group last week and this week we had a blast. I have to admit that I went into the evening with loads of trepidation, I really wasn't sure it would work. 20 minutes in I was thinking, ok it may work.... by time we'd got names and descriptions and the Suits, oh god this was so much fun, I don't think I've ever seen our group laugh so much. No spoilers, but do follow the advice on how to start and go with the dice, even the yes/no ones.

Highly recommended, so much fun and my group can't wait to get stuck into exploring Atria.

It is extremely seldom for me to write a review here, but I think this product deserves it! I finally managed to run my first session and it was a blast! We typically cannot go through more than 1 combat per session, and here we went through 3 big combats and 2 smaller skirmishes. Incredibly freeing, as a GM (RR :-)) it is so easy to run, it turned out I did not write a single thing for any of the combats, I was able to keep it all in my head and it shaved off literally hours of time at the table and from what I can see – players loved it.

I would recommend it to anybody who actually wants a tabletop role playing game and not a computer game recreation ;-) you are free to finally use your imagination again, and it is a lot less bogged down with simple – I hit it… it hits me stuff :-) Be creative, inspire your players, and let your players inspire you. I love this game and it exceeded my expectations!

Now a little bit of bad things at the end :-) The editing of the book could use some love and attention, but I am sure it is already in the works. There are spelling mistakes, layout issues (like tables are not coloured correctly), it brings the product down a bit because of it, but does not detract from the extraordinary fun you will have at the table.

I would be willing to buy another copy with all the extended FAQ explanations, fixed tables (duplicate names, spelling, colours you know what I mean) – as this is worth every penny even as it stands today. I agree that it is not easy for a new GM as you need to draw inspiration from your previous experiences, but that pretty much can be said about any game though ;-) You will enjoy yourself – that I can guarantee. So, if you are unsure if this is for you, I am here to tell you – give it a go and you will NOT be disappointed :-) Game of the Year (probably a century)!

Happy gaming everyone!

EZD6 Core Rulebook

Got my hardback EZD6 copy, and I am thrilled with it! It systematizes several concepts I had only half-intuited till now, while offering all kinds of inspiring ways to make RPGs more immersive and interactive.

For instance, I had been trying to find ways of making combat like an exciting dice contest, but DM Scotty has finally done it! Within the past year, I adopted something like the "strike" concept of hits rather than hit points, but I like how DM Scotty spells it out. His idea about (fluctuating) PC levels of wealth makes a lot of sense. This system favors Story over Math, and it keeps the game flowing.

I will be adopting several "best practices" and tips in future games, with some EZD6 sessions to try out the whole system. I love it! There are monsters I'd love to feature in my games like Dreks and the Sarlakarn and the DeathLurker! Not only is the book filled with great art, it is full of an experienced Game Master's practical wisdom for running high octane adventures. There's a wealth of great resources in here. Great purchase!

While I am a firm believer in the theory that there is no "right way to have fun" at the table... this book does make me feel like Goldy Locks a bit after a lot of trial and error over the years to find the RPG "porrage" thats just right for me as a Player and DM.

"This RPG is too crunchy and rules heavy".... "This RPG is too restricive and I can't build the hero I want".... "This RPG takes FOREVER to do combat and adjudicate rolls"... and on and on.

And while I can't say it will be the same for all Players and GMs out there, and thats ok. At least for this long time gamer, "EZD6 is just right for me!"

I love the way that the system finds a good balance between rules simplicity and depth of options and customization. And doesnt fall into the trap that a lot of systems do in thinking they need to have a unique and complex system for every possible action that may occur in the game.

EZD6 keeps the focus on making good stories and epic moments at the table, and allows the Players and Rabble Rouser (DM or GM) to have the leeway to make their cool ideas a reality within reason at the table.

And the "Karma System" is truely inspired in that players get to keep a sort of "meta-currency" for all the little rolls that don't go their way... and cash those in to help turn their fates at a date and time of their choosing to help ensure that while bot every action is going to be epic, they are guaranteed to have some that will be!

I could go on and on about all the little things that make me love this system, but I highly recommend that you pick this book up and give it a go for yourself.

5e: HARDCORE MODE
by Hans N. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 07/29/2022 03:00:38

Already a fan of Hank's work with ICRPG. This is another example on how the author just understands D&D.

This book is in my opinion just filled with great ideas. Some ideas, from an OSR player are simple, like 3D6 down the line and dead at -10 HP. Other ideas are genious on their own like Zymer's candle, spells by level, or zone based combat.

Very few ideas I'm iffy about.

Only shame is that I would still love to see PDF bookmarks for such a relative small PDF, and clickable index.

Even if you don't want to make 5e more "hardcore" there are just so many breaths of fresh air here that it's worth the purchase for anyone that is playing or has played 5e.

Honestly, if I ever run 5e again, this is the only way I would run it. I wished WotC just allowed free reign of the D&D license to Hank for 6e. Never gonna happen but one can dream.

EZD6 Core Rulebook
by Hans N. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 07/29/2022 02:46:56

Honestly, I like some/many of the ideas in this book but it does have shortcommings.

The core "exploding dice" mechanic is very fun but then the Hero Dice, Karma and special Magick rules make it feel quite complecated for a game that market it'self as easy. Some mechanics allow you to turn that 1 into something else but others don't and it takes some time for new players at the table to remember the details. Weird for a game that should be so good for a oneshot.

I also feel like too many terms were changed for the sake of being diffrent, "Rabble Rouser" for the GM, "Pushers & Shovers" for PCs, "Boon & Bane" for advantage and disadvantage, "Hero Path" for class, "Species" for race, "inclinations" for traits, etc. I understand why some games might want to change up some names for the sake of emphasising certain things. But here things were changed just for the hell of it. Again, for a game that should work really well for one-shots that's just makes it more difficult.

One of my biggest complaints is the "encumbrence" rules. Here the rules essentially say, if the GM thinks a player carries too much, the GM should make the tests harder. This looks like a simple rule but it's not. It makes things way more complicated. Now I have to track (mentally) what my PCs are carrying, decide how much is too many, then remember to make tests harder for those players that I decided are carrying too much but then I have to decide how much harder I should make the test. Compared to a simple Item Slot system, this is way moor complicated. It's like the game wants to avoid using numbers as much as possible but sometimes

Another point where numbers are needlesly avoided is the Wealth Level mechanic. Instead of players keeping track of a simple currency, the GM sets the level of wealth for PCs between 6 settings. In my mind that just makes things harder. I never had an issue with a basic currency, but now I have to decide as a GM when my players wealth level should go up, or should go down, and what they can afford at each level.

PDF also doens't have Bookmarks or a clickable index. And honestly that's the biggest crime here. It really doesn't take that much effort to create PDF bookmarks. PDFs over 20 pages should no longer be sold without PDF bookmarks.

Things I like, the general Magick/spell casting rules, the exploding dice mechanics, the simplicity of not having core stats but instead broad "boons" for tasks your character gets a bonus on, the general classes are just a bit intresting and different enough, the armor saving throw for attacks and other damage and the monster stats that give you a lot to go on.

All in all, some intresting ideas but too many decisions that just don't make sense to me. I will steel from this, but I doubt it will ever see my table again.

EZD6 Core Rulebook
by Matt N. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 07/23/2022 20:40:17

With all the hype of EZD6 out there in the interwebs I was both hopeful and skeptical. A system can sound great on paper, but once it's put into action it can fall flat on its face. This weekend was my 40th birthday and I had four players over to give this system its maiden voyage. Three of us were highly-seasoned roleplayers and the other two were relatively new to RP in general. The result? It was a instant hit! The system flowed seemlessly and everyone caught on in minutes. Freeing my mind up from all the stats/rules required of other TTRPGs, and just going with my gut of "roll a 3+" was so refreshing. I was able to focus on the narrative and it kept the session moving swiftly. My players all agreed it was a great system and blast to play.

The only thing that this system is lacking is a progression leveling system of sorts. I believe this is already in the works, but that was the only thing I would like to see added. Well done DM Scotty, well done.

EZD6: Fast and Frenetic Roleplay.

If you're reading reviews, you're probably trying to decide whether or not this system is worth your time and money. After taking the gamble on it, I can say that I personally fullheartedly taking the plunge if you enjoy the idea of an easy to run, rules-light cinematic combat system.

If you read "rules light," but are now thinking "ughhh," I must request you to change your mindset towards this system. There are actually a very suprising number of options available to the DM (which this system amusingly refers to as the Rable Rouser) as well as the players (referred to as Pushers & Shovers.)

For the players, The system boasts a whopping 9 classes for players to chose from, each of which can choose additional features called Inclinations (sort of like feats from 5E) and Aspects, which are roleplaying background hooks. Armor values and total HP are built into each class, which makes it incredibly easy get into a game without having to do a ton of work in character building. The best mechanic players have in this system is a resource called karma, points that they earn by failing rolls. Yup- You read that correctly; they succeed by failing. (And by succeeding.) The system is constantly granting players factors that grant them success, which allows your table's experience to really flow natually off of a constant rush of dopamine.

The character creation's mix of "simple depth" is balanced perfectly against the core mechanics of the system, which do well to earn the system it's name. Using a simple d6 dice pool mechanic, DM Scotty has designed a system that functions very well solely using d6s in a way that can be explained and played with virtually anyone regardless of their tabletop experience. The familar shape of the d6, crossed with it's simple math makes it beautifully relatable, while the mechanics at play in the system ensure that combat is quick and fun.

Riding the line between modern TTRPGs and OSR, EZD6 sits in a neat spot for players, as the Rabble Rouser can easily scale the game up or down based on the type of game world that the players want. Monster stats are incredibly easy to build on the fly using the system's rules for to-hit value and the Strike system, a simplified way to calculate health values.

Beyond just the monster stats, RR's also have tons of great tips avaiable from Scotty about facilitating a game, along with some great tables to help out with NPC and item design.

By now, you're thinking "Dang, this is just another fan boy review." Well, you're right. However, for the skeptics, I'll definitely fill in the "less than sunshine" aspects in case you're wanting a reason to doubt this amazing lil system.

The system, as written, definitely functions better for GM's with experience in other systems. While the core mechanic is incredibly easy to grasp, the EZD6 manual uses a slew of terms and references that a brand new player to TTRPGs may struggle to follow. As with all v.1 sytems, there also have been some various erratas & clarifications requested by the avid EZD6 community Discord that may not read perfectly to every user who's just skimming the manual.

For it's faults, however, this product is one that it is incredibly and wonderfully supported by its writer. DM Scotty has been absolutely relentless in his presence on Discord, online forums, and Youtube to be able to respond to all of the questions that come in. That dedication alone is worth my personal support to his product, nevermind the absolutlely amazing system.

To conclude this review, I can sum it all up with this: EZD6 captures the feeling I want out of a TTRPG. I don't have to hassle with rules. I don't have to consult 4 manuals, 9 errata, or a Twitter official ruling; I can just run the game fast and easy with anyone who's interested to play. I encourage you to take the plunge, if only for the PDF to see a way more complex TTRPGS can be run without as much hassle.

EDD6's system is just what I was looking for! I started playing RPGs with rules-light ones like FATE and Risus but then I had to shift to a bit more crunchy ones like 5e and SWADE. The reason's simple that those rules-light games don't have any tactical taste but more narrative.

Well, 5e and SWADE are amazing games to play with suficient options for tactics in battles, but when I have to take GM's role, I really become very lazy to prepare all the data for the adventure. For that, I needed something that's rules-light but mixed with minimal size of tactics and customization. I have tried to build easy SW or easy 5e with houserules but they went quite messy...

THEN I FOUND EZD6!

Just finished reading the book last night and I was so shocked how EZD6 satisfy all that I needed for my lazy GMing style! Yet, with taste of customization and tactics!

Right now, even while writing this review, I'm so eager to start EZD6ing with my fellas this weekend! Hope other settings come up with this system.

The dice mechanics are easy to understand, character creation only takes about 5 to 10 minutes depending the things that you choose. The EZD6 is a simple yet elegant game and can be enjoyed by the whole family.

If you have any questions about this game the author Scotty McFarland, is very happy to answer you questions.

You should give it a try, you will not regret it.

This is a wonderful system, I've just finished running it for two weeks with my group, after only having a couple of days to prep, when the main GM had to drop out. It's really easy to learn, quick and easy to prep for and runs quickly and doesn't get in the way of the story. Had loads of fun and the players want to us run it again. Loved it.

This is a fantastic system. It's simplicity makes it quick and elegant at the table. The game that my group and I tried had us howling in excitement more than once as crit after crit exploded. Dreaming up spells and miracles on the fly make for some creative use of these powers. If I could give it 10 stars I would! Definately going to become my go-to game from here on out. Thanks DM Scotty for this masterpiece!
