Babylon On Which Fame and Jubilation Are Bestowed (2nd Edition)
by Dominic W. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 08/05/2020 05:17:32

The single best reference of Mesopotamian/Bronze age information for rpgs - there is none better. Well worth the money. Everything a player or GM would need: names for both sexes in 5 languages, culture, professions, weights and measures, maps, locations, hooks, threats, religions, gods, monsters, weapons, tools, magic etc, etc. I have not tried the game system (which looks very refined, lightweight and elegant) but I am currently using the book to run another system.

Base your fiction off of this and enjoy.

I received the POD version and the quality was good. The book was smaller than I expected, but this is not a criticism. The I like the art quite a lot as well. I mostly got the book as source material for other systems, but the rules are not complex at all and I might give it a go on its own. I will probably pick up the Tribes and Armies, even though I understand there are only a couple paragraphs of material different from 2nd ed, since it's only .99 at the moment. Anyway, I am a deep nerd on historical settings and this one is awesome in it's niche. Well worth the look.

All Aboard for Murder! — a train-based scenario for Ryuutama

I'm looking forward to playing this scenario. Is it okay if I translate this scenario into Korean and upload it publicly on the Internet? I want to let my friends know about the interesting ryuutama scenario. I will write your name, and I will not earn any profit.

Absolutely! You (and everyone else) have permission to translate and republish, so long as 1) you credit me for the original, and 2) you don’t charge money for it. Thanks so much for the kind words, I hope you enjoy playing this as much as I enjoyed writing it.
All Aboard for Murder! — a train-based scenario for Ryuutama

The adventure is well written and provides a good deal of interesting NPCs absolutely neccessary to a murder mystery as well as a fun made interesting by the cast including a group of mischievous trainhands a group of Nekogoblins.

The Good

  • A brilliant cast of characters who can be equally suspicion inducing and interesting for the players to interract. Particular fondness for the swindling fortune teller. Including a table for false fortunes.

  • A fun twist that ensures this 'murder' works with just about any dragon instead of being kept purely as a black ryuujin story.

The Bad

  • Uninspired travel rules. Travel rules are adapted for moving between cars which will feel odd as it implies an implicit lack of safety while doing what seems mundane. My recommendation use travel rules only when trying to move quickly. Potentially add a cross train chase scene in at the climax through the train using the travel rules.

Pretty uninteresting, the resolution of the case is very unsatisfying, and the whole thing is really not adapted in any way for Ryuutama. Disappointing.

This is a remarkable accomplishment.

The amount of detail given on this long-gone culture is quite spectacular. Clearly the author is passionate and extremely knowledgeable about it, as the impressive and extensive bibliography that appears at the end of the book suggests. Yes, there's lot of fantasy stuff too (creatures, artifacts, etc.), but, in his description of the cities and the peoples of this world, the author takes great care to stay very close to what the archeological record offers. The NPCs described were living, breathing people once, who left notes and letters which can be read and studied today.

The fantasy elements are easy to pick out too. So, if you'd rather not have elves or dwarves in your world, just skip them.

Babylon On Which Fame and Jubilation Are Bestowed is an easy read, with few typos. The book itself is well organized and therefore easy to navigate.

Great book. Great work. Highly recommended.

Babylon On Which Fame and Jubilation Are Bestowed

If your leanings are towards gritty sword & sorcery, or you are tired of the usual pseudo-medieval worlds of most fantasy RPGs and are looking for something different, then look no further. This is a roleplaying game set in the ancient world of Mesopotamia around the time of Hammu-rapi (approximately 1767BCE).

The background material presented is very rich in detail, and it is clear to me that the author is expert in this period of history. The content refers to original Ancient Mesopotamian terms, and even provides the relevant cuneiform text! Impressive. In presenting the background, the author assumes that, whilst some players will want to play in a fantastical version of Mesopotamia, others will want something more historically authentic; both approaches appear catered for.

Although the game uses a somewhat altered version of Pathfinder/d20, it seems to me that part of the philosophy behind this book is that it will be used by players in their own preferred system. My view is that this work should be readily convertible to other systems, especially derivatives of d20 (my preference is for OSR type games, and I see no difficulty in conversion). Again, another feather in the hat of wider appeal.

In sum, there are few enough good RPG books out there set in Ancient Mesopotamia (others I would recommend being Ancient Kingdoms: Mesopotamia, and Testament), and this is a welcome addition. Given the rich detail this work contains, I consider it my 'go to' source for roleplaying in this historical era. It also has one of the best names for an RPG I’ve ever come across. Recommended!
