This installment of Rite Publishing's free e-zine is 50 pages long, 1 page front cover, 18 pages of advertisement, 1 page SRD, 1 page ToC, leaving 29 pages of content.
After David Paul's editorial we are introduced to this month's template by Steven D. Russell, the Dread Revenant. Remember the 2nd edition Ravenloft revenant of old? An unstoppable undead, perpetually on the hunt for his/her killer, with iron grip and signature weakness as well as the ability to rejuvenate? Yep, they are finally back! I love the template and the sample creature (that clocks in at CR 12 and comes with a nice IC-narrative) as well as James "Devin Night" Hazelett's artwork of a revenant, lore section and 3 monster feats as well as a spell to create revenants. An awesome section only marred by the lack of information on how much the template increases the CR of the base-creature.
Jonathan McAnulty's unrelenting support for the stellar "Secrets of Divine Channeling" continues by providing 4 sacred tomes, 4 feats and information on channeling 2 domains (family and home) - while the subject matter might seem dull, I really enjoyed these feats, tomes and effects as they are unusual and provide coverage of topics often neglected for the sake of primal conflicts between good and evil, law and chaos etc.
Creighton Broadhurst, mastermind of Raging Swan Press not only gets an extensive and neat 20-question interview, but also provides us with nice ready-made encounters: One at a now shattered bridge with the ghost of a conjurer. The write-up includes extensive terrain information as well, making it ready to be dropped into your campaign without any preparation. The second one has the PCs ambushed underground by a group of darkmantles.
This installment of Pathways is slightly different from other issues in that it includes a shorts story by David Bain - a great read, full of fluff and neat, dreamlike imagery - be sure to check this out to get some neat inspiration.
Finally, as always, some of the best pdfs by 3pps are reviewed by Dawn Fischer, Dark_Mistress, Megan Robertson, Golden-Esque and yours truly.
Conclusion:
Editing and formatting are good, layout is beautiful and adheres to the full-color two-column standard. The pdf has no bookmarks and the artwork is part stock and includes the cool original artwork I commented on earlier. While I was missing the CR-information on the Revenant, this still is among my favorite Pathways-issues, if not the favorite one. The content is top-notch, plentiful and free and the encounters, template, channeling-stuff, short story etc. - each component alone is worth the space on your HD. This pdf being free, you don't have a reason not to download this, thus my final verdict will be 5 stars.
Endzeitgeist out.
