In the wake of the Greyhawk Wars, kingdoms are struggling to survive. Beset by the hostile forces of Iuz, and the twisted soldiers of the Great Kingdom, the world's two greatest forces for good must strive to save themselves from overwhelming evil.

The kingdom of Furyondy, rent with internal disputes, strugglers to construct its northern defenses before Iuz can attack again. Southern lords protest against paying to protect northern lands, while others call for an end to the Pact of Greyhawk and all out war to recover Furyondy's lost territories.

In Highfolk and the Vesve Forest, hardy woodsmen ally with elves and gnomes to resist invaders in their homelands. The grey elves of the Lands of the Timeless Tree watch and bide their time, while the bold independence of the forest people works against them in resisting evil.

In the Kingdom of Nyrond, dissenting nobles rebel against the ancient authority of their sovereign. King Archbold must impose ruinous taxes on his people to save the realm from enemies which ring it on every side. While the forces of evil bide their time, secret forces gather to put another in Archbold's place.

The free states of the Flanaess are desperate for aid from any quarter. This is the time for heroes to take up the cause of good and come to the aid of the great and the wise.

Product History

WGR4: "The Marklands" (1993), by Carl Sargent, is the fourth book in the World of Greyhawk Reference series. It was published in January 1993.

Continuing the "WGR" Series. Greyhawk began a new era with Greyhawk Wars (1991) and the first post-Wars sourcebook, WGR3: "Rary the Traitor" (1992). However TSR then decided to revamp things even further, bringing Carl Sargent on board to write From the Ashes (1992), the boxed set that defined the new status quo for Oerth.

Though "The Marklands" was the second sourcebook in the post-Wars era, it was the first post-Ashes sourcebook, and so the clearest continuation of Carl Sargent's vision for the setting. This new era was also marked by a slight revamp in the graphic design of "WGR" books: "The Marklands" featured two-color printing (black and brown) as well as more graphical (and larger) sidebars.

Expanding Greyhawk. "The Marklands" detailed several Greyhawk lands that had received little attention previously. Much of the focus is on Furyondy, which lies to the west of the Nyr Dyv, and is part of the campaign area defined by From the Ashes (1992) — making it particularly critical to that era's campaign. The nearby areas of the Vesve Forest and the Free Town of Highfolk also receive some attention. Nyrond is somewhat distant from the other areas detailed in this book, lying to the east of the Nyr Dyv, but it's another area that's important to central Greyhawk.

Prior to the publication of this sourcebook, Furyondy's main claim to fame was its missing prince, which was reported way back in The World of Greyhawk Fantasy Game Setting Setting (1983). His fate was subtly revealed in T1-4: The Temple of Elemental Evil (1985); take a look at room 334, the "Inky Chamber".

"The Marklands" is also notable for being the only sourcebook from the post-Wars era that covers "good" lands, as the other published supplements were WGR3: "Rary the Traitor" (1992), WGR5: "Iuz the Evil" (1993), and WGR6: "The City of Skulls" (1993)

Future History. A few months later, WGM1: "Border Watch" (1993) gave players the opportunity to adventure in Furyondy (and fight the forces of Iuz).

About the Creators. Sargent was the creator of the From the Ashes era of Greyhawk, who also oversaw it during its short time of publication (1992-1993).

About the Product Historian

The history of this product was researched and written by Shannon Appelcline, the editor-in-chief of RPGnet and the author of Designers & Dragons - a history of the roleplaying industry told one company at a time. We (Wizards) recognize that some of the legacy content available on this website does not reflect the values of the Dungeons & Dragons franchise today. Some older content may reflect ethnic, racial, and gender prejudice that were commonplace in American society at that time. These depictions were wrong then and are wrong today. This content is presented as it was originally created, because to do otherwise would be the same as claiming these prejudices never existed. Dungeons & Dragons teaches that diversity is a strength, and we strive to make our D&D products as welcoming and inclusive as possible. This part of our work will never end.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
