Empire of the Petal Throne (Original Manuscript)

This is the original manuscript for Empire of the Petal Throne, produced in the Spring of 1974 in a limited and confidential run of fifty copies for the World of Tékumel, the creation of Professor M.A.R. Barker. This is the first time this original manuscript has been published or made available to the general public. The rules contained herein are a precursor to the game published shortly later by TSR, Inc. and have a number of significant differences from that later version.  However, this version in many ways is substantively similar to the later TSR version, and is being presented more as a historical document than as a different product.

This netbook was prepared from a copy taken directly from Prof. Barker’s archive, and is presented with each facing page containing the text of the original manuscript. By purchasing this netbook, you will be able to enjoy some of the prehistory of Tékumel gaming.

The Tekumel Foundation recognizes that some of the legacy content available on this website does not reflect the values of the World of Tekumel. While Prof. M.A.R. Barker created the World of Tekumel, he also held anti-Semitic and racist beliefs which he expressed under pseudonyms. Some Tekumel content may reflect these beliefs, which were wrong then and are wrong today. New material and facsimile reproductions of original materials are made available with this notice, because to do otherwise would erase the record of Prof. Barker’s actions and beliefs.

The World of Tekumel is an alien and fantastic world with its own diversity, far removed from the prejudices of the real world. However, we reject the racist and anti-Semitic beliefs of its creator. The Tekumel Foundation is committed to making products for the World of Tekumel as welcoming and inclusive as possible. A portion of all sales of Tekumel products goes to the Jewish Community Relations Council of Minnesota and the Dakotas, and to Holocaust education charities.

I would like to report an error in the cleaned up document. In the section that talks about the types of animals you can encounter It says that the animal known as "Chlén" have two hit dice. They're supposed to have three head dice according to the scan of the original document and the TSR version of empire of the pedal throne. Was this a mistake? Or was this an attempt to fix a mistake Barker made years ago?

There are a couple of notes I would like to make in an amendment to this statement:

1. When I say "cleaned up version" I'm referring to the retyped pages.

2. The Tékumel foundation is aware of this problem and are working to fix it.

3. Just FYI for anybody who's reading the original scanned pages, pages 74 and 75 are in reverse. However, the retyped version of pages 74 and 75 are correct. But don't worry, there's nothing wrong with the scanned versions of these pages, it's just that they're in the wrong order. At no other point was there an issue like this. Although I will note that the seven on the scanned version of page 76 is faded, with only a tiny splotch of ink indicating that there was a seven there in the first place. But, It is indeed page 76 and not page 6 as someone might think at first glance. Aside from this, there are no other issues that I can see other than there's a weird space in the word "petal" on both the title pages. That's about...See more

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
