Love that this cover calls out the 1st edition DMG!

That said, I do see some weird visual artifacts though, are we confident this is not AI generated? Looks like some tells that are common in Stable Diffusion.

It isn't. Check out Hive AI detector if you want to be sure. Rob would not do anything with AI art, that's certain.

Happy to say this is an excellent product even in the pre-release state. Along with Shadow of the Weird Wizard (the players guide) the game is 100% playable today. As with Shadow of the Weird Wizard I greatly enjoy Rob Schwalb’s take on the monsters, peoples, places gods and legends. In this case in the Borderlands setting where the Weird Wizard has recently disappeared initiating the mass migration of refugees. Taking inspiration from Greyhawk, it seems to likewise be inspired from many other fantastical places such as Lankhmar, the Dark Empire of Granbretan and other old school fantasy novels. I would say there are even nods to Freeport and Ptolus. Included in all of this is solid advice on running the game and a bestiary both grand and grotesque. Buy it!

What's in this book? There's no table of contents (yet). I presume it contains Ancestries beyond Human, monsters, an overview of the Borderlands and the Weird Wizard's domain, the GM advice featured in the (current) preview, and I assume magic items and other potential treasure (or cursed items). Anything else?

Zone Combat, Traps, Erratic magic use, and everything you said with one proviso - that is ancestry is minor and integrated into the bestiary section. Weird Ancestries is a separate third book coming later that will tentatively cover: Archon, Cambion, Centaur, Changeling, Clockwork, Daeva, Demigod, Dhampir, Dragonet, Dwarf, Elf, Faun, Gnome, Goblin, Halfling, Haren, Harpy, Hobgoblin, Jann, Living Statue, Naga, Revenant, Sphinx, Spriggan, Sprite, Tatterdemalion, Triton, Vermyn, Warg, and Woodwose. If you are uncertain about buying you may want to join the Schwalb Entertainment discord and ask some questions there.

To answer Frank, it's mostly GM advice, setting details, NPCs and monsters, the things you need to run the game. It's the GM-facing book. You can derive ancestries from some of the monster tables (they're even noted as "Ancestries") but they're highly abbreviated. You can use them, but what will come out in the Ancestries book will be vastly better.

Anyway, that's why I got it: now I can run Shadow of the Weird Wizard. It's basically a step up from just getting access to the manuscript in Word, but little more than that. If you want it to be navigable and, like, have art, just wait a spell. If you don't mind and you loved Shadow of the Weird Wizard, this is a must have.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
