The Player's Guide for Shadow of the Weird Wizard

Shadow of the Weird Wizard® is a fantasy roleplaying game in which you and your friends assume the roles of characters who explore the borderlands and make them safe for the refugees escaping the doom that has befallen the old country. Unsafe are these lands: the Weird Wizard released monsters to roam the countryside, cruel faeries haunt the shadows, undead drag themselves free from their tombs, and ancient evils stir once more. If the displaced people would rebuild their lives, they need heroes to protect them. A brand new game built using the system powering Shadow of the Demon Lord, this game gives you everything you need for you and your friends to champion the innocent, to brave grave dangers, and right terrible wrongs, all while exploring the wild frontier of the borderlands!

Some saw him as a mad sorcerer who commanded eldritch powers of staggering might. As proof, one only has to look at all the abominations he set loose in the lands—the hybrid beasts, the multilegged hulking collectors, floating eyes that hang in the air trailing their nerve endings. And then, far, far beyond the edges of the new lands rose the walls of the Forbidden City and the clockwork peoples who dwelled there in seeming servitude to the dread mage who ruled over all he surveyed.

But the Weird Wizard is gone. His shadow remains, but the figure casting it disappeared and none, not even his closest servants, know where he went. It might be coincidence that his absence preceded the bloody civil war that tore the Great Kingdom apart and that precipitated the violent struggle between the other nations in the west, or the Weird Wizard might have had some stabilizing influence that enabled civilization to flourish once more following a far older, nastier decline. Too, he could have been the source of the conflict and abandoned the world to its fate.

Either way, the instability sends people by the thousands spilling into the borderlands. As this territory grows more and more crowded, refugees are looking to the east to make their homes. The first forays into the strange place have ended with disappearances and death, and the few people who have returned carry tales of hostile inhabitants, cruel faeries, and hideous, ravenous monsters. If the new lands would be tamed, there must be peace with the inhabitants.

Such efforts demand heroes. Luckily, there might just be a few around. This book shows you how to make a hero who can meet and triumph over the greatest challenges of exploring a world that stands in the shadow of a Weird Wizard.

This core rulebook features illustrations by an amazing crew of artists who are actual people! They are: Matteo Spirito, Yeysson Bellaiza, Auri Cavendish, Andrew Clark, Biagio d’alessandro, Çağdaş Demiralp, Nim Dewhirst—Kasgovs Maps, Jack Kaiser, Katerina Ladon, André Meister, Britt Martin, Victor Moreno, Mitch Mueller, Matthew Myslinski, Eduardo Nunes, Mirco Paganessi, Claudio Pozas, Phill Simpson, Kim Van Deun, Sergio Villa-Isaza, and Cardin Yanis.

Hey, Diogo,
I do not believe so. You should be able to go to the recently ended Kickstarter page and get more information. Below is what they listed so far.

Well, since this isn't a complete product, I'm going to hold out for the accompanying Secrets book before really giving this a look. I'll admit to being intrigued. It's recommended by Owen K.C. Stephens, and that's a recommendation I take seriously.

But... my dudes. My dudes. I have to ask. Why even bother with a Preview if *that's* going to be your Preview?

I find the decision to have a minotaur(?) and elf on the cover, but sequester non-human playable races in the DM companion book to be very strange and frustrating.

I understand this is probably a "Well, we don't want the GM to have to say "No, you can't play that" to a player if they want a human-focused game" type of situation, but... I dunno, rubs me the wrong way as a lover of weird races.

Edit: I hope that the alternate ancestries are able to be as versatile in creation as humans.

Don't worry! Alternate ancestries (their form in Secrets of the Weird Wizard) are more like "add-ons" to human ancestry. They don't change attribute scores in general (except of orcs, because they were once human, but changed), but add new abilities and hindrances (and can change size and speed), and give a new trait to character (like Faerie or Angel).
And of course, wait for Weird Ancestries book)

My worry is that it will be like Orcus where Humans get to choose a Crux (the moment that marked them as an adventurer, like being betrayed by someone you trusted, or being the heir to some great power), and a Heritage (Like being a seafarer or aristocrat) to create their Ancestry, but non-humans just choose the "Elf" or "Dwarf" Ancestry, like humans are varied and cosmopolitan but elves, dwarves and etc are all cookie cutter and identical.

Previews are some kind of record card rather than the actual book.

I suspect Matteo Spirito, Yeysson Bellaiza, Andrew Clark, Biagio d’alessandro, Çağdaş Demiralp, Nim Dewhirst—Kasgovs Maps, Rick Hershey, Jack Kaiser, Katerina Ladon, Britt Martin, Victor Moreno, Mitch Mueller, Matthew Myslinski, Eduardo Nunes, Mirco Paganessi, Claudio Pozas, Phill Simpson, Kim Van Deun, Sergio Villa-Isaza, and Cardin Yanis would all disagree with you as none of them are AI.

I know SotDL is the base of this title. But how much of Demon Lord is straight up compatible with little to no work for this one? Could you use the ancestries from there to hold you over until the Secrets and Peoples book comes out, or would it take a lot of work to to get them in here?

Base is a strong word, the two systems share principles but they ultimately function different. On Kickstarter there was news about a release of layout-less and art-less version of Secrets coming soon, which I believe will also contain ancestries that may be used for play (it is said so in the other ancestries blurb in Shadow) but without the depth of lore and additional features that will most likely be present in Weird Ancestries, so I'd be on the lookout for that.

I don't think you got a proper answer to this one. It's near enough zero. Way too much changed both in the core rules and the progression for any player option to be plug and play here. The GM book has 20+ ancestries in it though so you're not missing for content on that front.

Somehow this is not mentioned in the product description, and I see some confusion about this online already. This is essentially the PHB, there will be a second core book that combines the DMG and MM and is called Secrets of the Weird Wizard.

People missing some content (e.g. monsters) will find them there.

Yeah, I wish this was better explained on the store page, because I had not followed (nor cared about) the crowdfunding. There are still very basic errors in the file too, despite the various fixes (the level 1 Priest has no starting spells). I suppose the people who crowdfunded the game know where to report them, but we're going to have to wait someone post them too, I guess.

Level 1 Priest not getting spells is not an error. Discovering traditions grants talents that fill the same role as starting spells.

Team member on Discord said Secrets of Weird Wizard will take about 8 - 12 weeks from now on, so expect something around late April/early May. After that the next releases will be adventures from what I understood.

Secrets should include the traits for all of the 30 ancestries, just like the playtest material did but there is currently no ETA for the Peoples of the Weird Wizard supplement. I suppose it will be worked on after the print books for Shadow and Secrets are shipped.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
