100 Body Mods and Augmentations For Your Sci Fi Game

Humanity is known for augmenting and modifying itself, both for practical reasons (such as laser eye surgery and dental reconstruction) as well as for purely aesthetic ones (like tattoos, piercings and scarification). And in the sci fi future, whether it takes place among the stars, or in the neon-lit concrete gutters of megacities, that tendency to alter what we are is often even more pronounced.

Whether your game has you investigating strange happenings onboard orbital space stations, skulking through the glowing ghettos of a cyberpunk dystopia or heading out to the rim worlds to track down wanted targets, it's likely you're going to come across all kinds of body modifications and upgrades both cybernetic and bio-engineered. The following examples can be used purely for flavor, or as game rewards as you see fit. And while you can give them to your player characters, you can also use them as inspiration for the antagonists they'll have to deal with!

Here are some sample results:

• S.O.S. Module: An implant most commonly associated with wealthy or influential persons, this modification allows one to be easily tracked should they go missing. Modified versions of this device are used by military operatives and criminal cartels alike, but those particular modules use bands and signal patterns that won't be picked up by everyday receivers (and especially not by law enforcement personnel). While not everyone gets tagged once they reach a certain grade or income level, it has become a surprisingly common security measure these days.
• Bearing Joints: Artificial joints have been a surgical option for centuries, but bearing joints take this augment to a whole new level. Used primarily for shoulders and hips, these assemblies increase the strength and smooth action of one's motion by using surgical steel bearings. While most commonly a replacement for injury, old age or birth defects, these joints have also been used by dancers, athletes and violence contractors for the inherent advantages they offer over biological models.
• Dry Fire Ring: Birth control options have often focus on those who have a womb, rather than those who are planting their seed in it. For those who want to avoid tinkering with their body chemistry, though, a Dry Fire Ring is one of the most common choices one can pick if they don't want to get anyone else pregnant now, but they might want to later. A simple device that's installed as an outpatient procedure, it kills any sperm cells that pass through it. The latent charge in this implant also tends to kill sexually transmitted viruses, which provides a second level of protection and security. Most importantly of all, though, this implant can be removed as easily as it's installed, should one wish to start making babies the old-fashioned way.
• Scrambler Panel: A mod that's meant to protect a user's other augmentations, a Scrambler Panel makes it all but impossible to make a connection with a wireless device. Typically used to protect necessities like pacemakers, neural wetware, prosthetics and artificial organs, this mod is used by those across the board. After all, no one wants hackers gaining access to their body and holding it for ransom.
• Holoscreen Display: Typically found implanted in the back of one's hand, or in the wrist, these projector screens operate as a display hub for those who don't want their comms device in their heads. These screens make customized projections that can be interacted with by touch, or with one's voice, and they can be used to get read outs on one's active implants. While there are still some who wear bulky wrist dials that serve the same purpose, these sleek, simple mods are surprisingly common for those who never want to be separate from their media feeds and message logs.
