Open Fantasy is a simple foundation for your own homebrew and creativity.

No races, No classes, No levels, No limits!

The System

Using a simple flexible 2d10 system mechanic. Extra dice are added to the pool with advantage and disadvantage, but you pick which two dice you keep.

The system is scaled to sit well with OGL / OSR products so it's easy to transfer adventures and resources from your favourite settings into Open Fantasy.

Characters are defined by who they were, who they are, and the destiny that awaits them.

No Races

If you want your character to be an elf or a dwarf, that's cool, and you can purchase ancestry feats to make your own take on the classic theme.

No Classes

There are board themes you can follow, but you forge your character's own path, by mixing skills and feats from the 'broad paths' that are open to you.

Open Fantasy SRD is open licence [CC BY 4.0]. so you can use it for personal or commercial use. Forever.

The Open Fantasy SRD document is a text only copy of the Open Fantasy Players Guide and is included in this product for download.

This is the Alpha version of this document.

As a living project this document is frequently being updated based on feedback.

is there any plan to replace the ai art in the book for the final version? i like warmtail's art on the cover and in the interior, but i'm honestly kind of just bummed at the other pieces, even inks without color would be an improvement

I would at some point like to employ an artist to do all the interior art. But that is not cheap.
Perhaps I'd do a kickstarter to fund that when we have progressed to making physical copies?

I'm always on the look out for suitable stock art, and I'd rather have the work of a real artist over that of AI, and I'd really like to have the unification of a single artist over that of many.

The cover art is a combination of warmtail's [love his work] background and the characters are by mech.

So I feel like this system does have a lot of promise. Is there a place where those interested in providing feedback can chat with y’all outside of the discussion thread here on DTRPG? Something informal, like a discord or something.

So would I :)

It's only been live 24 hours, and I snuck it out without any fanfare. As soon as a review(s) become available I will link to them... unless they're bad ;)

For me, in my country, this is an $18 product. Your description says it's scaled for OGL/OSR products but your dice range is 2-20 and with increasing Advantage/Disadvantage, that's going to affect the maths. You also say it's an "open license" but there's no apparent license actually presented. If your intention is to donate some/all of the contents into the Public Domain, then you might consider wording similar to the 4C system, which also notes that artwork is not included as part of that designation. Or use the Creative Commons CC0 license to place the text of the document out there. On the other hand, since you ask for attribution, maybe you intend for it to actually be CC BY 4.0. I appreciate the desire to contribute to the community but your current release is vague enough that there's no reason to consider uptake instead of say, simply using the 5.1 SRD. If "open license" is part of your sell point, please make the licensing more explicit. I'd like to support you but $20 for an alpha...See more

Thanks for you comments Christopher F. You make a very valid point that I had not considered.

Clearly I've been a little naive. In short: I wanted to make something cool that other people could build upon without fear.
But you are right I have been nebulous when I should have been specific. I will look to update the legals shortly (I need to go talk to a few people who might be able to advise me on this).
In the mean time I will say, that no, the artwork work is not included in any licence. All the art in this product was licensed from Adobe Stock. If you want to use it you need to go and licence it from them, so that the artist(s) get paid, that's only fair.

As for how how 2d10 v 1d20 affects the maths... yes it does. It changes the distribution to something a bit more bell curve, advantage / disadvantage tends to manipulate the numbers a little but the range remains the same.
I've been using 2d10 at my table for a long time, both in RPGs and in wargaming, because...See more

Ok so I've done some research on Creative Commons, specifically CC BY 4.0

At the moment I cannot add that to the existing Open Fantasy book because I do not own the artwork, and cannot relicense it.
What I can do is to provided a stripped out text only SRD document. I am quite willing to do that.

So I could either provide a plain text file to download alongside the fancy layout version and call it Open Fantasy SRD, or I could provide access to a google drive with the SRD in it.
Still working out the details, on the how.

First, I'd say I appreciate you taking the time to listen and consider the feedback offered It goes to show the community feeling that can make rpgs such a powerful and great experience. Regarding the license wording, instead of having to create a whole other product, I certainly can see you saying something along the lines of "The text of Open Fantasy is placed under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0) license. The artwork copyrights remain with the respective owners and are not included." If you're carving out other stuff, then it gets trickier and a separate SRD makes sense then. I don't think you need to put a lot of additional work on your shoulders for something you're gifting to the community in the first place. Depending on your goals, you wouldn't even necessarily have to offer it separately; it could always be a part of the files folks get when they purchase your game. Sure, some people will likely repost it somewhere else at some point but... *shrug*
I'd also...See more

Any chance we could get some more details about the basic rules/mechanics? I like the idea of this game but neither the game description nor preview give much info about the system beyond the core dice mechanic.

All Actions are worked out with 2d10 + Attribute + Skill +/- any other mods. Is the basic system.

However the magic comes from layers of Advantage and Disadvantage.
Every Advantage adds an extra d10 to your roll and you must discard back to 2d10, usually a player will bottom slice dropping the lowest number on the roll.
Every Disadvantage adds an extra d10 to your roll also, but these top slice your results.

Advantage and Disadvantage do not cancel each other out, so you could for example roll 2d10 plus 2 more Advantages and 1 for Disadvantage.
Criticals are done by selecting matching results on the dice. An all snake eyes is a critical fail.

So in the example above I'm rolling a total of 5d10... lets say I get 1, 6, 6, 8 and 10... Disadvantage top slices the 10, and 2 Advantages allow me to drop 2 more dice... I could drop 1 and 6 to level me with 6+8=14, or I could drop the 1 and the 8 to leave me with 6+6=12 and a critical!

Very simple...See more

Does this system use Armor Class?
Also, are magic spells/effects managed using spell slots?
Also again, are there mechanics for saving throws? Attack bonus? Ability modifiers?

No the system doesn't use Armour Class.
Open Fantasy uses Defence... how hard you are to hit and Armour which reduces the damage you suffer when hit. You can build to be a dodgy type or you can build to be a tank, but you would struggle to do both.

No Spell slots!
A mage can cast all day every day, until he suffers a blowback, which might just give him a head ache or it might KO or if really bad kill him [very unlikely unless he almost dead already], this type of magic is called Sorcery.
'Above' Sorcery in Invocation, you invest a feat to master a spell, and though it takes a little longer to cast you have safety features built in that prevent blowing your own head off.
So why would a mage ever want to use Sorcery... well it's very flexible, need a spell to do X, build it on the fly. Invocation is very safe, very predictable, but no room to change the parameters.

All Actions are worked out with 2d10 + Attribute + Skill +/- any other mods. The 2d10 give a better...See more

Ummm sir its 86 pages! Also as the author updates it you get the updates for free? What do you want for 6 bucks? If you are on the fence maybe ask the author some questions. Why do you want something for free when the free part would be over 1/2 the book! If you cant afford 6 bucks for a pdf book with free updates perhaps you should look at another hobby! Sheesh, I get wanting to save a buck but these authors are trying to support themselves and their families! Sorry this just is greedy entitlement! Wanting something for free! its 86 pages for 6$ worst case its not the game for you, best case its a awesome game and you get HOURS of enjoyment from it for SIX DOLLARS!!! Skip your Starbucks for one day and your not out any money!!! Thanks I will get off my rant box!!!

Ok. I will put it differently.
Norbert - John P., my reasons are mine and you shouldn't screw up in what's not your business, because you don't know my reasons, and my message was not to you, but to the author. Did you get it?
Moreover, I have many different games to test. I came here only recommended by FeralGamers, whose games I have them all (almost). That's all.
And I will not change my hobby only because some rude guy gets into what he shouldn't care and tells me what I should do. Sorry, maybe in your family you dictate what others should do; not in my household.
It's easier than that. I will keep myself to my many games that I am playing and testing and try and buy the ones that really do interest me.
And to the author: good luck with your endeavour!, and sorry for this interference caused by this guy meddling in what's not his concern, nor shouldn't be. I was considering to maybe buy your game with the discount. This rude guy friend of yours? made me decide to forget about...See more

These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
