What would it look like if Moldvay was asked to create a Basic version of 5e?  I suspect something like this.  While there is an existing official Basic version, it includes all of the rules (not very basic) and hardly any Player Character option.

Bugbears and Borderlands flips the script on that.  The rules have been streamlined to the very basic core, while still offering a lot of character customization options at character generation, WHILE also being very easy to learn and play.

Hundreds of pages can be daunting for newer or younger players.  It's a reason why Moldvay's B/X back in the day brought in so many new gamers, because it was an easy read and easy to play.  B&B emulates this philosophy while being largely compatible with core 5e.

NOTE: This is for the 8.5x11 single book version.  All rules are presented in this single black and white volume.  If you prefer the 6x9 full color booklets (one for Players and one for GMs), please click on myPubllisher Hyperlink and select those options.

I have to ask the question, since you replaced "Rogue" with "Expert", why did you not replace "Wizard" with "Spellcaster" or "Magic User". It would have fit in so well with the original basic style which called them "Magic Users."

Also - it doesn't make sense for the "cleric" to be called a "wizard". Would make a lot more sense if that was called "Magic User" or "Spellcaster."

Nicely done. I did notice that the sample character sheets at the back use the ROGUE word and not EXPERT. Is this a typo?

Yep. Sadly there are a few typos in there I'm in the process of fixing. When the new version gets uploaded, you'll all get notification from DTRPG to download the corrected version.

OK thanks. One two more things... wouldn't it make more sense to call the Wizard a Spellcaster, a more generic term, since the class does more than just arcane spells but healing as well? just my thoughts....

Also, is there a fillable character sheet?

So one of my players noticed that the spell shillelagh is listed in the wizard spell list as a cantrip while its description says it is a level 1 spell.

What are the differences between this and Five Torches Deep? What does it do different/better?

It seems that Bugbears and Borderlands doesn't do the encumbrance rule of 5td as well as having races/species that are not limited by ability stat requirements (which there is no rolling of ability stats).

Greetings

I have a question about the spell Shillelagh. In the spell list it is listed under cantrips but the spell description shows it is level 1. Which is correct?

This is a wonderful little game. It's up front with what it sets out to be, and it does that job well. The core of the game matches D&D 5e, but pared back to something elegant. It's retro without being regressive, and absolutely charming.

These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
